EllRay Jakes
review 1: EllRay (short for Lancelot Raymond) is one of few African-Americans in his third grade class. He is also the shortest kid. Jared, the biggest kid, is constantly bullying him. EllRay doesn't know why Jared and his side-kick are picking on him. He doesn't want to tell his dad, because his dad will think it is because he is African-American. EllRay is pretty sure that is not the reason. Eventually he stands up to the bully and finds out the reason he is being bullied. I think 3rd graders would enjoy this book, however, AR gives it a 4.8 reading level, which pretty well eliminates 3rd graders picking it up. I don't think it is good enough for a classroom read-aloud. The illustrations are cartoonish and do not add to the story.
review 2: EllRay Jakes Is Not a Chicke
... moren is on the Texas Bluebonnet list this year and I'm currently working my way through that list. This is the first in a series of EllRay books and I can see young boys who are reluctant readers gravitating towards them. I'm a bit torn on this book. The focus is on bullying and EllRay is torn between fighting back and staying calm when put in tough situations. And he definitely does make some good decisions, practicing great self-control. You think, "What a good example to share with kids." But the flip side to that is the fight he finally does get into and hides from his parents to be able to go to Disneyland. It won't take you but 30 minutes to read through it, so you'll just have to decide for yourself. less
