review 1: Animals are truly amazing. Unfamiliar with this bird prior to reading this book, I learned that the Godwit makes a migration of 7,000 from Alaska to New Zealand! The book introduces readers to a female godwit hatching from her egg and follows her as she grows and prepares for her lengthy journey. The migration and its many dangers are covered and her story ends on a happy note with her homecoming in New Zealand. Back matter includes fun facts about godwits, recommended books and websites, and an author's note.A great nature read, especially for classroom use and younger audiences. Recommended for grades 1-3.
review 2: Although I knew nothing about the young bar-tailed godwit before reading this book, I certainly have even more of an appreciation for birds and ho
... morew far they migrate. In this case, these birds fly from Alaska to New Zealand, a 7,000 mile journey. The book focuses on the hatching of one female chick and then follows her as she grows, learns to fly and find her own food, and then sets off on her migration. The author's words are chosen carefully to put her readers near the godwit; for instance, the opening page describes how the bird "steps into the world on long, wobbly legs"(unpaged), and a later page tells how the bird lands on the mudflats of New Zealand "where land mingles with the sea" (unpaged). The soft colors in the tissue paper collage illustrations effectively mimic the bird's Alaskan habitat and show her flight with others of her species as they wing toward New Zealand. The book contains additional resources and an Author's Note about how the residents of Christchurch, New Zealand welcome the birds back to the area and send them off to Alaska with a celebration. Although it has much less text than Phillip Hoose's Moonbird: A Year on the Wind with the Great Survivor B95, both books tell inspiring stories of survival that will have readers shaking their heads in incredulity. less
