review 1: I'm kind of obsessed with the Amazon, and while Unconquered didn't get into the actual environment and its critters as much as I'd like, I dug it. The fact that there are people in this world who haven't worn denim or seen a Best Buy kind of excites me.Whenever I read quotes from the leader of the expedition, though, I read them in Renee Belloq's voice. And though that's on ME as opposed to the author, it was still a problem. Goddamn Belloq.
review 2: This book was great because it's about an expedition to document uncontacted native americans in the Amazon jungle in 2002. It was like reading a sequel, set one hundred years later, to "The River of Doubt" by Candice Millard. Both are true accounts of incredible expeditions involving close encounters with venom
... moreous snakes, anacondas, giant insects, crocodiles, piranhas, and isolated villagers armed with poison tipped arrows. It made some part of me wish I were a National Geographic correspondent, like the author, rather than a lawyer. less
