review 1: This was the first I've read of Silas House after hearing many of my friends and colleagues speak well of his writing. I was between 4 & 5 stars so I left it at 4 because the conflict in the book was not deeply drawn out because I believe I've also heard this book was intended for a YA audience. I realized as I was listening to it that I was also ten years old in 1976 so everything hit me right where I lived as well. The music, the memories, and I grew up in "the country." I didn't have a favorite tree - it was a huge rock - that I would sit on and look at the mountains and watch the sky and contemplate those heavy burdens just like 10 year old Eli. I keep wanting to write that this book was precious. It was. Not sentimental - real and grabbles with real human heart... moreache but yet precious and triumphant in a quiet way. A must read for anyone who enjoys regional/Appalachian fiction and if you like a country drawl listen to Silas House narrate this audio version of the book.
review 2: House created this heart-warming, nerve-tugging story about a 10-year old boy who lives in a sleepy southern town with his loving family. Through his perspective, the reader witnesses the joy of frolicking outside in the summer. We learn about the unrelenting friction and bond between siblings, the value of true friendship and the importance of demonstrating love within a family. His strong, handsome, kind father returns from the Vietnam war with darkness lurking within him. The family struggles to help him adjust to his previous life, but the war lives deep within him. House has a flair for figurative writing. He presents the beauty of the natural world with expressive detail and the conflict of war with a yearning for redemption. The characters are rich, teaching the reader about self-acceptance in the face of adversity. Eli the Good is a timeless story and a perfect summer read. less

The book starts out rather slow, but by the middle I was truly engrossed! What a great book!
