review 1: I've got a bit of a weird relationship with Sophie Hannah books. I love mysteries and I love crime stories, I gobble them up within a day and move onto the next one, and there's no shortage of them waiting for me. I've read a couple of her books and wasn't overly impressed but the reviews are harsh to the point where you feel like she must have committed some heinous crime towards the written word. In short, her books aren't great, but they're also not that bad. She's cited Agatha Christie as a big influence and you can see that in the scenarios she sets. It's the characters where it all falls down for me. I've nothing against a book with unlike able characters but this one has a few too many for me. Tim and his poetry obsession was especially grating. If I could have give... moren this 2.5 stars I would.
review 2: This started off pleasantly intense, with a strong, intelligent female character, stuck at a foreign airport as her flight is rerouted, who engages in a verbal altercation with a rude young woman. The young woman lets slip that she knows an innocent man has been arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Our protagonist attempts to follow up on this confession, and the story then starts to stumble as we're introduced to way too many unlikable characters who stay emotionally involved with each other for somewhat inexplicable reasons. The complex, quirky detectives on the case are evidently the main characters in this author's series, but this book is a confusing intro to them, the backstory is definitely missed. The bones of the story are interesting but it's not the most believable tale. I want to try the first in the series though. less
