review 1: Excellent book, but the religion stuff was very technical in many ways, so I can see why some people lost patience with the author.I couldn't possibly have appreciated this book as much if I hadn't attended seminary for four years in pursuit of a Master of Divinity degree. Thse only thing I didn't like about the book was its ending, which was actually a non-ending. It didn't answer the central question of the book. It just leaves you hanging. Will he or won't he? Did she or didn't she?
review 2: Hmm.. this was an amazing story for so many reasons. It started out reading as a travelogue, and granted that I had just returned from Turkey, Syria sounded very similar and the way Damascus was described just brought back fresh memories of one of the most memorable trip
... mores of my life. But then the story became a spiritual quest, something that has meant very much in my life, especially in the memoir of a Catholic who is trying to understand Islam and finding the overlaps between these religions. This was definitely a theme from my Turkey trip. And those two type of messages would have been enough, but Stephanie gave me much more. She gave me a love story - not only a love story of humanity, of faith, of the desire of peace, but of the unexpected one that comes into our life and makes everything feel that it's just right. Maybe it's the timing of when I read the book - in any case it was definitely a five star for me. less
