review 1: Really enjoyable to read about her experience with getting on the show, but also enlightening to read about her childhood. If anyone needs to learn how bullying can hurt, they should read this book. Of course the most fun parts are about the first appearance on the show--seeing the famous clip of her performance, you don't know that it came at the end of a very long day, or that there is a part they didn't broadcast in which Simon and the judges tried to talk her out of doing I Dreamed a Dream and do an easier one instead. Thank goodness she held out for the one she knew would be best!
review 2: I loved this book! I thought I knew some of the details of Susan Boyle's life, but her story as written here took me inside her thoughts and feelings as her life as
... moreunfolded. She has been very careful in this book to be as charitable as possible, especially in her view of her parents, siblings, and her upbringing, to the point that she does not name the kids who bullied her in school when she was young. There are so many ways one could appreciate this story, and be enlightened by it. Certainly, Susan has much to say to those who teach, parent, or go to school with children who are somewhat different than the norm. Readers who are into the music scene will appreciate the details Susan gives of how she prepares for singing, and who has helped her along the way. But throughout this book, there is another story, that resonates with many of us. It's the story of a life that didn't quite turn out so great in the beginning, and was full of adversity and difficulties, and yet now is so full of promise and hope and success. The adversity and difficulties have not really left Susan's life, but she is overcoming them, bit by bit. Her bravery to just put her foot on the stage, and just start singing the first few notes, are an inspiration to all of us who face an overwhelming task. less
