review 1: As an HP book, it's better than the average hp our there. The heroine at least stands up for herself when she's not 'frozen', or tired/sick, or second guessing herself, or moping in 'poor-is-me' mood. A lot of unsatisfactory or rushed resolution in the book. Like the h's arresting officer. I would have put the over-eager/half-c police officer to the 'cleaners' for his harassment of the then very pregnant and upset heroine. I do want the hero's brother to bleed though in this story. Like cut him and rub salt in him for his treatment of the sometimes tstl heroine. His 'go after her' suggestion at the end did not even redeem his self-righteous (I could add more adjectives) scenes. He will be my 'love to hate' candidate for the year. Overall, the story's echo for me as the boo... morek end is that the author has a low regard for women. Granted this was written 2002 but still the way the author put the heroine into emotional cleaners without the men who put her there even acknowledging how wrong they treated a woman (including the hero half the time) leads me to such conclusion.
review 2: 4 1/2 Stars! ~ Jake's a natural when it comes to parenting, successfully raising his brother and sister who both now had families of their own. But divorced, he doesn't fancy another marriage, and now he's been rejected twice for adoption. He's come to the conclusion that the only way he's going to be able to keep a child is if he's the actual biological father. So Jake starts to look for the perfect surrogate mother. Harley is a young woman who's always had to fight to prove herself worthy. Wrongfully accused and convicted, she has a record that keeps on haunting and pulling her down. She needs her job as an auto mechanic, and once again, when someone else steals from a client's car, she's the one to blame and is fired. Jake believes Harley didn't steal from him, and feels terrible when she's fired, and even more terrible when he learns her boss put out a bad word on her and no one wants to hire her. So the man who loves to take in strays, finds himself with a new house guest. He likes Harley and when she tells him she'll never be mother material, he offers her the job of surrogate for his baby. It'll be win win all around; he'll get a child of his own, and Harley will have the finances to finish her college degree and a chance to finally make a new life for herself. Neither thought what would happen though if one of them fell in love.Ms. Gable's debut is a wonderful love story of two people who know what it is to be rejected. Jake is a take charge hero who can't leave a damsel in distress. Harley isn't the usual damsel. Outwardly she's stubbornly independent, but inside she's that girl that's always been found not good enough. When Jake admits that he loves her, she tells him not to, that she doesn't deserve him and she'll only let him down. I admired Jake tremendously when he dug in his heels and decided to prove her wrong. I really enjoyed reading Jake and Harley's journey to a HEA. less
