review 1: I had hesitations getting into this one, because as much as I am a fan of paens to nature, I start to nod off when authors wax on and on ecstatically, Mary Oliver being the exception. Shetterly does have sharp, focused descriptions of what she sees and experiences, but she ties it in so deeply and thoughtfully and emotionally with bigger, universal themes. I loved especially her honest look at what wildlife conservation means in areas where people who make their living off the land co-exist with "white collar" workers. Excellent read for those of us staring middle age in the face: no overt message from this book other than to stop, look, and just be.
review 2: I'm enjoying this book because it awakens my desire to be connected with nature and reminds me of th
... moree significance of the people in our lives. Since I live on a farm I'm quite connected with nature but this makes me think of wild nature. I also took opportunity to learn more about the geography of Maine of which I'm not familiar. The author asks if a person can imprint on a place which creates a standard of comfort by which you measure whatever else is real in the world and whatever else is beautiful. That seems to describe what happened to me and the family farm on which I was raised and ended up returning to.The author talks of the great people who enter our lives, and just by being themselves, change the way we live in the world. less
