review 1: This is a great pioneer type story. I really liked reading about how they would "settle" one of their properties. The animal encounters made this story of trials and perseverance very enjoyable. There were times I felt like I was right there with them, and times I was glad I was nowhere near them. Good book with good stories. Could have done with a bit less of her complaining about her husband, but I am thoroughly impressed by all the things those two accomplished.
review 2: First of all, huge HUGE snaps for Tammy! The courage it takes to embark on a risky adventure is enormous. I liked how she started off in the journey compromising for property in Oregon and the progression leading up to Alaska. This state has always fascinated me and I would love to visit.... more I cannot, however, profess to wanting to rough it like they did. The learning of new skills, the fear of the unknown, the downright annoyance at having your partner disregard you and still finding the beauty if where you are.....priceless.I loved the conversational tone of the book. I Normally do not read a lot of nonfiction because I find it bland, but this was really well written. Her husband, Tom, annoyed the hell out of me though. Maybe she was going for a lighthearted feel, but it came across, to me, as very angry at him marginalizing her opinions at every turn. She had proven herself quite adept at situations and he should have valued her input. But, the book isn't about making judgement on him as a person. He must have some wonderful traits or else they wouldn't be married.I hope they enjoy their cabin, bears and all. I wish we could have seen a snap of that pot rack though! less
