Tanner Colby manages to approach this loaded topic with a winning combination of thoughtful analysis and wry humor. He's particularly good at interweaving compelling local and personal anecdotes with some solid primary source history. Everyone should read this book--whether or not you agree with everything inside, you'll be a little more informed about the current state of race relations.
review 2: A solid book about race relations from a unique perspective. The author describes his white middle class upbringing, which parallels my own. In a graduating class of 360-something students, I can count my black high school classmates on one hand. Despite the myths of progress, we still ... morelive in a segregated society. Colby illustrates this in his discussion of painful and often futile attempts at integrating schools, neighborhoods, businesses, and churches. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic, especially in conjunction with "How to be Black" by Baratunde Thurston. less
