review 1: A number of years ago, I read Salaam Brick Lane by Tarquin Hall, an English writer who lives in Delhi and is married to an Indian-born BBC reporter. I loved the book so much that I decided to investigate his other works. It turns out that Hall has written a series of mystery books about Vish Puri, “India’s Most Private Detective.” There are four in the series, The Case of the Love Commandos being the most recent. The Vish Puri books are fun to read. Vish Puri, his wife Rumpi, his mother Mummy-ji (who often winds up solving her own cases) and the many operatives that work at the detective agency (known by their nicknames “Handbrake,” “Door Stop,” “Tubelight,” and “Facecream”) are colorful characters. The mysteries also provide an insight into the... more culture of and modern-day life in India. For instance, The Case of the Love Commandos takes on the topic of India’s caste system. The Love Commandos is a group that helps facilitate marriages between people of different castes. However, the potential groom has disappeared – apparently kidnapped. The bride’s father is charged with the crime, but Vish Puri is convinced that he is innocent. Hall weaves many threads together as other people disappear, are arrested or are murdered and keeps the reader guessing till the book’s conclusion. If you are interested in India, this entertaining and edifying series is for you.
review 2: Mummy-ji (and Chubby) do it again: successfully solve a mystery, or three, against seemingly impossible odds. For Mummy-ji, maybe "old is gold" and being invisible allows her to see what others cannot. Or, she's paid attention to her late husband, is savvy, and cunning. On the trail of a pickpocket, she ends up finding a bold robber who goes on pilgrimage to plunder. Meanwhile, Vish Puri gets involved in a case, thus delaying vacation, through Facecream and her involvement with the Love Commandos. In India, times are changing and those who seek to marry across caste lines often need help (and courage). Although all is well in the end, and true love prevails, odd political alliances, old dalliances, and genetic testing on the poor make for a riveting, and fun, adventure! less
