review 1: (Disclaimer: I am personally acquainted with the author. We grew up together, going to the same school, and were neighbors for several years.)The thing I like about Fivash's books is her ability to take a Bible story and add historical context and human drama to bring a fresh perspective to a familiar character. For instance, in "Dahveed: Yahweh's Chosen," she establishes the basis for David and Jonathan's relationship, to overcome what would be a natural antagonism between the heir to the throne and the one who would eventually receive it. (Call me clueless, but this tension had never occurred to me during a lifetime of hearing this story.) This book captures the intrigue and maneuverings at court in a similar manner to Fivash's earlier book on Joseph. Obviously the... morere is much license and speculation taken to fill in the gaps in the scriptural account of David's early life. But it serves its purpose to entertain, inform, and -- more importantly -- inspire the reader to better understand David's personal journey to know and follow Yahweh's will for his life. In gaining a new understanding of David's experience, we can hopefully see and respond to God's leading in our own lives.I find Fivash's books to include distracting dialogue which is not pertinent to the story line, and the editing is at times not as tight as it should be. But these are minor complaints to what is a good addition to her growing list of historically-based stories of well-known Bible personalities. Now it's time for me to buy the recently-released second book in the series on David.
review 2: Dahveed (or David, in normal English) is a remarkably accurate accounts of Dahveed's life. Although because of the vagueness of the details from the Bible, Fivash does add her own fiction, and interpretation to the known facts recounting Dahveed's (David's) life. Unlike most books of this type, Fivash gives each of King Saul's household a unique personality. Jonathan especially you can't help but love through his exasperation and willingness to help Dahveed going against his dreams and instead walk by faith, allowing God to work through him instead of working against Him. Be sure to join Dahveed's life from a mere child, to the man who killed Goliath in this remarkable tale. less
