review 1: Oh my word--food puns! This book made me laugh a lot, which of course means I want to try it in storytime. Especially as the pictures are so great--real food pics with arms and legs. That will keep the kids' attention. Humor that they will totally grasp. The rhyming poem that awaits completion (and which they'll figure out what should go with it early on). And a good lesson on being nice and being friends. (Good heavens--soup was quite rude at first!)Love it.11/26/14 Used as my closing book in Thanksgiving/Food preschool theme. The pictures certainly held their interest. The kids started to enjoy the rhyme--calling out jelly but then me saying something different. Perhaps not as many laughing reactions as I'd like, but it is a pretty young crowd. The parents chuckled a... more bit.
review 2: Age: Preschool-2nd gradeTough Issue: New kid on the blockPerhaps inspired by Facebook feeds obnoxiously full of food pictures, Border presents a sweet tale of a Peanut Butter. Having moved into the neighborhood he has no friends to play soccer with him. The book shows him introducing himself to several food products, each with unique, distinct, and sometimes quirky personalities. Just when he had given up, he finally finds the perfect friend: Jelly. The title is an odd choice because Cupcake gets just as much time in the book as all the other foods. But the dry humor and silliness makes up for it. Great photography and staging! less
