review 1: I recommend this to anyone who has experienced life with a person with multiple personality (now called Disassociative Identity Disorder). The author does an excellent job of balancing compassion with the horror of living with multiple personalities in one person. There is enough description of the mother's behavior to make it believable without being hateful or sensational. Even the religious bent is not overdone. This is a quick read and necessary reading for anyone who has had this sobering mental illness as part of their family dynamic.
review 2: I applaud Fletcher's courage in telling about her struggle to love her mother. I felt it was honest and heartfelt. I didn't care for the style in which she told her story, nor did I care for the poetry. I think... more the poetry meant more to her and her family than it did to the readers. I felt the story was somehow incomplete and like many stories of DID - it presents an incomplete and sensationalized view of what exactly DID is. I would have loved to hear things from her mother's point of view, but I understand that it was not possible. I worry that her story will continue to make people feel afraid of DID and other mental illnesses when it doesn't need to be that way. I'm sorry her mother did not receive the mental health care she needed, but in reality, insurance doesn't cover it well, and health care is often something that many people cannot afford. We as a society need to do better in being accepting of those with mental illnesses. less
