From the time in 1969 when he first came upon the great enigma that surrounds the little village of Rennes~Le~Chateau in southwestern France, Henry Lincoln has relentlessly pursued his search for the solution to this fascinating and often bewildering mystery. He wrote a series on the subject for the BBC's Chronicles program, then ~ with coauthors Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh ~ published a book, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, which became an immediate bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. Now, almost ten years after the publication of that controversial work he has discovered why Rennes~Le~ Chateau has been the source of so much mystery and drama. It is nothing less than the eighth wonder of the ancient world, a natural and perfect pentagram of mountain peaks surrounded by a titanic, man~made temple. Previously invisible to all but an initiated few, this magnificent monument is here disclosed for all the world to see. This has not been an easy task. The author has had to decode the most cryptic clues that have been dispersed down the centuries in paintings and parchments, on tombstones and churches. What is now revealed IS an immense geometric temple, stretching for miles across the landscape, a sparkling constellation of pentacles, circles, and hexagons. Its engineering complexity far exceeds that of the pyramids and led Henry Lincoln to question just how it could be built. With evidence that has astounded experts in measure~mapping and surveying, he demonstrates convincingly that the basic measurements for the amazing structure are the mile and rod, which, as was not before believed, have a precise mathematical basis and are not the result of arbitrary calculations. Here is an astonishing detective story, which has a denouement as magical as it is indisputable, as baffling to scholars of many disciplines as it is simple in its grand design.

1 Quick! Name a band lineup that included members of The Grascals, Marty Stuart & The Fabulous Superlatives, The Osborne Brothers, The John Cowan Band, and Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper (to name a few). If you guessed The Mike Snider String Band, you re correct! Mike Snider has long been a staple in the country music world. He was frequently seen on TNN s Nashville Now, and was a cast member of one of the most beloved television shows of all time, Hee Haw. For over twenty years now, he has entertained millions as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Known for his quick wit and side-splitting tales about Sweetie, Mike is also one of the Opry s best instrumentalists. A master of many instruments including the banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, he always has a great band that plays some of our favorite traditional instrumentals. One of Mike s best band lineups was when he recorded his only live album: Live At The Station Inn. When Mike recorded this album roughly ten years ago, his band included Terry Smith on bass and Charlie Cushman on banjo/guitar, along with current members Matt Combs and Shad Cobb on twin fiddles. Now THAT s some instrumental fire power! The Mike Snider String Band Live At The Station Inn featured some of everyone s favorite instrumental numbers such as Sally Goodin, Soldier s Joy, Angelina Baker, Old Joe Clark, and more. What makes these cuts stand out, is Mike s unique arrangements that still stay true to the traditional style. After a humorous intro by Glenn Sutton, the band starts right into the picking. Denver Belle opens the show, with Shad Cobb and Matt Combs s twin fiddles in full force. When Doyle Lawson carried twin fiddlers in Quicksilver for a brief time, he was once asked why he felt the need to have two fiddle players. Lawson remarked, The only thing better than having two fiddle players is having three fiddle players. I couldn t agree more. Doubling up the rosin causes a much richer and fuller sound. The twin fiddles throughout this album are a real treat. Shad Cobb, who spends his spends part of his time as a member of The John Cowan Band (remember Black Blizzard? ), is put out front in his rendition of Soppin The Gravy. Snider put it best when introducing Shad on the album: He is one of the most natural fiddle players you ll ever hear. You definitely hear that on Soppin The Gravy; the rest of the band practically sits back and turns Shad loose, and he tears it up. The other half of the one-two punch in The Mike Snider String Band was Matt Combs. Mike tells everyone that Matt has a degree in classical violin. To many traditionalists, that seems a bit odd, but it really makes for a fresh perspective. Matt really shines on the band s version of Ashokan Farewell. He starts the number off beautifully, letting his classical touch take the spotlight, before it closes with Snider s harmonica. One of the really great recordings on this album is Darlin Pal O Mine. A banjo/bass duet, it showcases why Charlie Cushman and Terry Smith are two masters of their craft. Terry Smith, a former member of the Osborne Brothers and current Grascal, has always been one of my favorite bass players, and this cut is one of the reasons why. He slaps the socks right off his upright bass, and has mastered this often overlooked art. Charlie Cushman has played the five with everyone from Michael Cleveland to Marty Stuart and is an authority on traditional banjo playing. He has achieved much acclaim as of late through his old-time recordings with Johnny Warren. He completely chews up Sally Goodin, and his and Mike s version of John Henry is really neat. Featuring a double dose of banjo, Charlie and Mike present the three-finger Scruggs style of picking as well as the claw hammer method on this old classic. Banjo fanatics will go ape over this one! Mike s instrumental ability is in full display on this record. In addition to his banjo playing, he picks a mean mandolin, particularly on Bull At The Wagon. If. Very good in very good packaging.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Includes the story "Premium Harmony"--set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine The masterful #1 New York Times bestselling story collection from O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King that includes twenty-one iconic stories with accompanying autobiographical comments on when, why and how he came to write (or rewrite) each one. For more than thirty-five years, Stephen King has dazzled readers with his genius as a writer of short fiction. In this new collection he introduces each story with a passage about its origins or his motivations for writing it. As Entertainment Weekly said about this collection: "Bazaar of Bad Dreams is bursting with classic King terror, but what we love most are the thoughtful introductions he gives to each tale that explain what was going on in his life as he wrote it." There are thrilling connections between stories; themes of morality, the afterlife, guilt, what we would do differently if we could see into the future or correct the mistakes of the past. In "Afterlife," a man who died of colon cancer keeps reliving the same life, repeating his mistakes over and over again. Several stories feature characters at the end of life, revisiting their crimes and misdemeanors. Others address what happens when someone discovers that he has supernatural powers--the columnist who kills people by writing their obituaries in "Obits;" the old judge in "The Dune" who, as a boy, canoed to a deserted island and saw names written in the sand, people who then died in freak accidents. In "Morality," King looks at how a marriage and two lives fall apart after the wife and husband enter into what seems, at first, a devil's pact they can win. "I made these stories especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth." Stories include: -Mile 81 -Premium Harmony -Batman and Robin Have an Altercation -The Dune -Bad Little Kid -A Death -The Bone Church -Morality -Afterlife -Ur -Herman Wouk Is Still Alive -Under the Weather -Blockade Billy -Mister Yummy -Tommy -The Little Green God of Agony -Cookie Jar -That Bus Is Another World -Obits -Drunken Fireworks -Summer Thunder "From a master of the short story, a collection that includes stories never before in print, never published in America, never collected and brand new- with the magnificent bones of interstitial autobiographical comments on when, why and how Stephen King came to write each story"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Brandeis. Through a "joint endeavors fund" and regularly supplied lists of requests, these two men, working together, influenced foreign and domestic policy, manipulated the media and placed their own disciples in the burgeoning federal bureaucracy, lobbying against the collectivist legislation of the New Deal s "First Hundred Days," including acts Brandeis later joined his brethren in holding unconstitutional, they helped draft what has come to be called the "Second New Deal." Remarkably, despite the breadth and duration of this relationship, it never became public knowledge, despite the assistance or at least acquiescence of persons at the highest levels of governrnent~ presidents, senators, congressmen, cabinet secretaries, even other judges~as well as writers and editors of newspapers, magazines, and national law reviews. The relationship was remarkable in one other way: in 1939, Felix Frankfurter was himself appointed to the High Court. And so it turned out that Frankfurter came to the bench fully trained in the art of being an extra~judicially active Supreme Court judge. The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection is a story that has never before been told. Stretching from Cambridge to Albany, from London to Washington, from 1916 to 1962, its supporting players include Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Maynard Keynes, Neils Bohr, Raymond Maley, and David Lloyd George. The book sheds new light on major events in American political history~from the use of the Brandeis/Frankfurter connection to influence public opinion in the Sacco~Vanzetti case to Frankfurter's stewardship of FDR's programs to bring the U.S. into battle against Hitler. But most of all, The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection is a story of two very different men who came together secretly and against all established norms for judicial behavior to effect social and political reform from Supreme Court chambers. Brandeis~the visionary, the giant of American law, the ex~corporate lawyer turned "people's attorney"~found it nearly impossible to set aside his reformist passions once he had been appointed to the Court. Harvard Law Professor Frankfurter~a man of unabashed patriotism, boundless energy, and intense personal loyalty~gained access to the major political figures of his time, as well as an unparalleled inside view of the Court. Unerringly documented, The Brandeis/ Frankfurter Connection challenges many cherished notions about the role of Supreme Court justices and the myths surrounding the highest court in the land.

Appendices (includes a list of the 1,607 American prisoners aboard the Hell Ships of whom less than 400 survived. Index. Introduction by John Toland. The author survived the Bataan Death March, twenty-eight months of slave labor in the Philippines, and transport to Japan aboard the infamous "hell-ships." Manny Lawton was a twenty-three-year-old Army captain on April 8, 1942, when orders came to surrender to the Japanese forces invading the Philippine Islands. The next day, he and his fellow American and Filipino prisoners set out on the infamous Bataan Death March--a forced six-day, sixty-mile trek under a broiling tropical sun during which approximately eleven thousand men died or were bayoneted, clubbed, or shot to death. Yet terrible as the Death March was, for Manny Lawton and his comrades it was only the beginning. When the war ended in August 1945, it is estimated that some 57 percent of the American troops who had surrendered on Bataan had perished. This is the story of how men can suffer even the most desperate conditions and, in their will to retain their humanity, triumph over adversity. Some Survived is a harrowing, poignant, and inspiring tale that lifts the heart. The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000-80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war from Saysain Point, Bagac, Bataan and Mariveles to Camp O'Donnell, Capas, Tarlac, via San Fernando, Pampanga, where the prisoners were loaded onto trains. The transfer began on April 9, 1942, after the three-month Battle of Bataan in the Philippines during World War II. The total distance marched from Mariveles to San Fernando and from the Capas Train Station to Camp O'Donnell is variously reported by differing sources as between 96.6 and 112.0 km (60 and 69.6 mi). Differing sources also report widely differing prisoner of war casualties prior to reaching Camp O'Donnell: from 5,000 to 18,000 Filipino deaths and 500 to 650 American deaths during the march. The march was characterized by severe physical abuse and wanton killings, and was later judged by an Allied military commission to be a Japanese war crime.

As Sir Edward Sullivan wrote in his Introduction, "Its weird and commanding beauty; its subdued and goldless colouring, the baffling intricacy of its fearless designs; the clean, unwavering sweep of rounded spiral; the creeping undulations of serpentine forms that writhe in artistic profusion throughout the mazes of its decorations. the quaintness of its striking portraiture, have raised this ancient Irish volume to a position of abiding pre~eminence amongst the illuminated manuscripts of the world." In this famous commentary, Sullivan traces the historical background and origins of the manuscript and places it as a ninth century manuscript, of a later date than the Book of Lindisfarne. Popular legend, however, has it that The Book of Kells was produced by St Columba and the monks of the monastery of Kells about the middle of the sixth century AD. Certainly, the manuscript survived many vicissitudes: the Abbey of Kells was sacked and pillaged during the tenth century; thieves sought its gold~studded cover. It was in the possession of the monastery at Kells at the time of its dissolution under Henry VIII on 18th November 1539, and was latterly acquired by Bishop Ussher, who was employed by King James I to collect antiquities relating to the Church. Five years after Ussher's death in 1661, it was transferred to Trinity College, Dublin, where it still resides. The manuscript was mutilated by an eighteenth century bookbinder, but in its present form consists of 339 pages measuring 13 x 9½ inches. The late Sir Edward Sullivan, an outstanding authority, made an exhaustive study of this magnificent example of early Celtic art especially for The Studio; his historical survey and notes on the pages form the introduction to the reproductions in full colour of twenty of the most beautiful pages, and the four plates of initial letters. To complement Sullivan's text and these illustrations, this edition also includes an historical analysis of Celtic illuminated manuscripts by Johan Adolf Bruun.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. New York Times bestseller Henry Kissinger, consummate diplomat, and statesman, examines the strategies of six great twentieth-century figures and brings to life a unifying theory of leadership and diplomacy. An extraordinary book, one that braids together two through lines in the long and distinguished career of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. In Leadership he presents a fascinating set of historical case studies and political biographies that blend the dance and the dancer, seamlessly. James Stavridis, The Wall Street Journal Leaders, writes Henry Kissinger in this compelling book, think and act at the intersection of two axes: the first, between the past and the future; the second, between the abiding values and aspirations of those they lead. They must balance what they know, which is necessarily drawn from the past, with what they intuit about the future, which is inherently conjectural and uncertain. It is this intuitive grasp of direction that enables leaders to set objectives and lay down a strategy. In Leadership, Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders through the distinctive strategies of statecraft, which he believes they embodied. After the Second World War, Konrad Adenauer brought defeated and morally bankrupt Germany back into the community of nations by what Kissinger calls the strategy of humility. Charles de Gaulle set France beside the victorious Allies and renewed its historic grandeur by the strategy of will. During the Cold War, Richard Nixon gave geostrategic advantage to the United States by the strategy of equilibrium. After twenty-five years of conflict, Anwar Sadat brought a vision of peace to the Middle East by a strategy of transcendence. Against the odds, Lee Kuan Yew created a powerhouse city-state, Singapore, by the strategy of excellence. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The best of them have teeth." Stories include: -Mile 81 -Premium Harmony -Batman and Robin Have an Altercation -The Dune -Bad Little Kid -A Death -The Bone Church -Morality -Afterlife -Ur -Herman Wouk Is Still Alive -Under the Weather -Blockade Billy -Mister Yummy -Tommy -The Little Green God of Agony -Cookie Jar -That Bus Is Another World -Obits -Drunken Fireworks -Summer Thunder "A collection that includes stories never before in print, never published in America, never collected and brand new--with the . bones of interstitial autobiographical comments on when, why, and how Stephen King came to write each story"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

In 1764, the great Samuel Johnson, irascible geniu s, unparalleled wit and the toast of all society, is plagued by i ll health and has become jaded with his bickering dependants. Suf fering from a bout of melancholy, he accepts an introduction to t he table of Henry Thrale, a wealthy Southwark brewer, and his viv acious wife Hester. Thus begins an extraordinary relationship tha t is to last twenty years - and allows us into a world unknown to James Boswell. "As Johnson settles into the generous niche esta blished for him in the Thrales' crowded and hectic household, he comes increasingly to rely upon Hester Thrale, and their intimate friendship develops into something darker and more ambiguous. Th e family is drawn into the raucous, chaotic caravan of Johnson's friends and admirers Garrick and Goldsmith, Fanny Burney and Josh ua Reynolds, sycophants, scholars and drunkards, and it is left t o Hester's neglected oldest daughter, named after her mother but known as Queeney, prodigiously clever, spirited and mocking, to p rovide her own sharp commentary on the destruction that ensures." Ground-breaking history of how King Henry VIII cre ated England's navy It was Henry VIII who began the process of m aking England a first-rate sea-power. He inherited no more than s even warships from Henry VII, yet at his own death the King's Nav y had 53 seaworthy ships afloat (much the same size as the Royal Navy today) manned by almost 8,000 sailors. Henry VIII originall y needed a navy to hold the English Channel and blockade the enem y while he invaded France. Later when invasion from the continent grew serious Henry's navy fought in many actions. Moorhouse doe sn't only deal with seagoing exploits. Thanks to Henry VIII docky ards were built (Greenwich and Deptford), timber had to be felled in quantities previously unknown (from land seized during the di ssolution of the monasteries), and hemp (for rope) was harvested; new skills were developed, not least the gun-founders and the ma ster shipwrights. Some of the ships were celebrated - 'Henry Gra ce a Dieu' (aka 'Great Harry') was the biggest ship in the world - 1,000 tons, 122 guns, crew of 700 and the 'Mary Rose' (500 tons , 80 guns, 40 crew) became one of the most famous after she heele d over too far, took water and sank with the loss of almost all h ands off Portsmouth. Editorial Reviews Review Moorhouse is stee ped in his subject and conveys the often daunting detail of marit ime plenipotence with an infectious Patrick O'Brian-like enthusia sm?THE TIMES [A] detailed and atmospheric account?SUNDAY TELEGRA PH About the Author Geoffrey Moorhouse was ¿one of the best writ ers of our time¿ (Byron Rogers, The Times), ¿a brilliant historia n¿ (Dirk Bogarde, Daily Telegraph) and ¿a writer whose gifts are beyond category¿ (Jan Morris, Independent on Sunday). This splendidly enjoyable anthology - an ideal bedside book - includes some twenty-two first-hand narratives, from British and American sources, of naval life and death in the French Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Though some are extracts from memoirs written many years after the events described, others stem from closer to the action and so have an immediacy and freshness that sweeps away the two intervening centuries so that the reader all but feels the presence of the story-teller. Accounts by officers, some to achieve yet higher rank, such as Cochrane and Porter, alternate with less-polished descriptions from the lower deck, some frank in the extreme, particularly as to scrapes ashore. Of particular interest is Surgeon William Beatty's account of Trafalgar and of the death of Nelson, which is often referred to in other texts but is quoted here in full - even today, it is impossible to read it without emotion. Every aspect of the naval officer's and seaman's life, whether afloat or ashore, is covered here, but a consistent theme throughout is the cheerful courage, camaraderie, humanity and sense of honour in the face of unrelenting hardship and adversity that characterised all levels in the service. Devotees of the naval fiction of Forrester, Kent, Pope and O'Brian may on occasion wonder whether the reality can have been as consistently violent and hazardous as their novels portray but this volume confirms that if they err, it is on the side of moderation. William Henry Dillon's view of the Glorious First of June from the gun-deck of HMS Defence and Samuel Leech's account of the HMS Macedonian vs. USS United States duel are as grim and blood-spattered as anything in such fiction. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Elizabeth I is one of England's most famous monarchs, whose story as the Virgin Queen is well known. But queenship was by no means a certain path for Henry VIIIs younger daughter, who spent the majority of her early years as a girl with an uncertain future. Before she was three years old Elizabeth had been both a princess and then a bastard following the brutal execution of her mother, Anne Boleyn. After losing several stepmothers and then her father, the teenage Elizabeth was confronted with the predatory attentions of Sir Thomas Seymour. The result was devastating, causing a heartbreaking rift with her beloved stepmother Katherine Parr.Elizabeth was placed in further jeopardy when she was implicated in the Wyatt Rebellion of 1554 a plot to topple her half-sister, Mary, from her throne. Imprisoned in the Tower of London where her mother had lost her life, under intense pressure and interrogation Elizabeth adamantly protested her innocence. Though she was eventually liberated, she spent the remainder of Marys reign under a dark cloud. On 17 November 1558, however, the uncertainty of Elizabeths future came to an end when she succeeded to the throne at the age of twenty-five.When Elizabeth became queen, she had already endured more tumult than many monarchs experienced in a lifetime. This colourful and immensely detailed biography charts Elizabeths turbulent and unstable upbringing, exploring the dangers and tragedies that plagued her early life. Nicola Tallis draws on primary sources written by Elizabeth herself and her contemporaries, providing an extensive and thorough study of an exceptionally resilient youngster whose early life would shape the queen she later became. The heart racing story of Elizabeths youth as she steered her way through perilous waters towards Englands throne is one of the most sensational of its time. Drawing on primary sources from both Elizabeth herself - including some from her own hand - and those closest to her during her tumultuous youth, this is the first fully comprehensive biography of the early life of Elizabeth I in over twenty years.
