Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Beloved classic about a little girl lost in a topsy-turvy land and her encounters with the White Rabbit, March Hare, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and other delightfully improbable characters. 42 illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. One of the English language's most popular and frequently quoted books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was the creation of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (18321898), a distinguished scholar and mathematician who wrote under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. Intended for young readers but enjoyed equally by adults, the fantastic tale transformed children's literature, liberating it from didactic constraints. The story is deeply but gently satiric, enlivened with an imaginative plot and brilliant use of nonsense. As Alice explores a bizarre underground world, she encounters a cast of strange characters and fanciful beasts: the White Rabbit, March Hare, and Mad Hatter; the sleepy Dormouse and grinning Cheshire Cat; the Mock Turtle, the dreadful Queen of Hearts, and a host of other extraordinary personalities. This edition features Sir John Tenniel's complete original illustrations, bringing to life a beloved classic that has delighted readers and listeners since its first publication in 1865. Beloved classic describes a little girl's adventures in a topsy-turvy land underground and her encounters with such improbable characters as the White Rabbit, March Hare and Mad Hatter, the sleepy Dormouse, grinning Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, and the dreadful Queen of Hearts. Includes all 42 of Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. A classic of children's literature that includes both Alice stories, with the original illustrations.Student edition, with an introduction by 19th-century specialist and historian Todd Webb.Lightly annotated. The unabridged text of a great classic. Academic, easy-to-read format. Perfect for undergraduate and AP classes. Are Lewis Carroll's two Alice books works of satire or fantasy-or a combination of the two? Or perhaps they are neither satire nor fantasy. What Wittgenstein sees as language-based nonsense is at the heart of Lewis Carroll's Alice books. We can see that by examining the rules by which language games seem to be conducted in Wonderland and on the other side of the looking glass. It is no wonder that Ludwig Wittgenstein seemed to enjoy Alice so much. Carroll was giving examples of the way language games can collapse into nonsense years before the Austrian began to think along the same lines. That is not to say that Wittgenstein drew direct inspiration from Carroll, but the works of the philosopher and the children's author speak to one another across the gulfs of time and genres.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a novel by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Set some six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Through the Looking-Glass includes such celebrated verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The mirror which inspired Carroll remains displayed in Charlton Kings.Plot summary: Chapter One - Looking-Glass House: Alice is playing with a white kitten (who she calls "Snowdrop") and a black kitten (who she calls "Kitty")-the offspring of Dinah, Alice's cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-when she ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror's reflection. Climbing up onto the fireplace mantel, she pokes at the wall-hung mirror behind the fireplace and discovers, to her surprise, that she is able to step through it to an alternative world. In this reflected version of her own house, she finds a book with looking-glass poetry, "Jabberwocky", whose reversed printing she can read only by holding it up to the mirror. She also observes that the chess pieces have come to life, though they remain small enough for her to pick up. Chapter Two - The Garden of Live Flowers: Upon leaving the house (where it had been a cold, snowy night), she enters a sunny spring garden where the flowers can speak; they perceive Alice as being a "flower that can move about". Elsewhere in the garden, Alice meets the Red Queen, who is now human-sized, and who impresses Alice with her ability to run at breathtaking speeds. This is a reference to the chess rule that queens are able to move any number of vacant squares at once, in any direction, which makes them the most "agile" of pieces. Chapter Three - Looking-Glass Insects: The Red Queen reveals to Alice that the entire countryside is laid out in squares, like a gigantic chessboard, and offers to make Alice a queen if she can move all the way to the eighth rank/row in a chess match. This is a reference to the chess rule of Promotion. Alice is placed in the second rank as one of the White Queen's pawns, and begins her journey across the chessboard by boarding a train that literally jumps over the third row and directly into the fourth rank, thus acting on the rule that pawns can advance two spaces on their first move. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson ( 27 January 1832 - 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem "Jabberwocky", and the poem The Hunting of the Snark - all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life. From a young age, Dodgson wrote poetry and short stories, contributing heavily to the family magazine Mischmasch and later sending them to various magazines, enjoying moderate success. Sir John Tenniel (28 February 1820 - 25 February 1914) was an English illustrator, graphic humourist, and political cartoonist prominent in the second half of the 19th century. He was knighted for his artistic achievements in 1893. Tenniel is remembered especially as the principal political cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years, and for his illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). Paperback. Condition: new. Glenn Diddit (illustrator). Paperback. This is not the Alice of movies and TV, this is the genuine Alice of Lewis Carroll - but unlike you've seen her before. This black-and-white illustrated adaptation follows the original storyline as word-for-word as was possible, and is an engaging way to introduce children to the classics. Although Sir John Tenniel's Victorian woodcuts inspired the art (and his masterpieces were redrawn where available . spot the differences!) art aficionados will easily see it wasn't he who fully illustrated this book . but Glenn Diddit, and he did it in his own unique and whimsical style. If you love the true story of Alice you will appreciate the accuracy; if you enjoy graphic novels this one is packed with visual goodies. Easter eggs include illustrated references to "Alice's Adventures Underground" (Lewis Carroll's original hand-drawn version of Alice), some "see-through" pages, "the other side" of the caterpillar, and other things put in to sneak past the reader without taking away from the story. Alice herself goes through a wringer of dream transformations that range from Tenniel's little girl to what could be described as a comically old, puffy-lipped dwarf. (No apologies are made for the silliness.) This format enables today's visual age to enjoy an enduring classic, and the book was originally endorsed by the Lewis Carroll Society of North America as part of their 150th Anniversary celebration. The unique, fully illustrated format appeals to even the most reluctant reader while being a great addition for the true Alice's Adventures in Wonderland collector! Get yours, and discover the full story you've never been shown in movies or on TV. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Physical Info: 1.3" H x 9.1" L x 6.4" W (1.8 lbs) 544 pages. 8th printing w/number line. 3 gilt sides, silk red ribbon marker, ribbed spine, beautiful illustrated paste downs. Features: Bookmark, Illustrated, Price on Product, Table of Contents. Target Age Group: 08 to 12. Contributor Bio: Carroll, Lewis Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (27 January 1832 - 14 January 1898), better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and a photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems The Hunting of the Snark and Jabberwocky, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. Contributor Bio: Tenniel, John Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) was a British illustrator, graphic humourist and political cartoonist whose work was prominent during the second half of England's 19th century. Tenniel is considered important to the study of that period's social, literary, and art histories. He was knighted by Queen Victoria for his artistic achievements in 1893. Tenniel is most noted for two major accomplishments: he was the principal political cartoonist for England's Punch magazine for over 50 years, and he was the artist who illustrated Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Witty, whimsical, and often nonsensical, the fiction of Lewis Carroll has been popular with both children and adults for over 150 years. The newest edition to the Leatherbound Classics series from Canterbury Classics, Lewis Carroll takes readers on a trip down the rabbit hole in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," where height is dynamic, animals talk, and the best solutions to drying off are a dry lecture on William the Conqueror and a Caucus Race in which everyone runs in circles and there is no clear winner. "Through the Looking Glass" begins the adventure anew when Alice steps through a mirror into another magical world where she can instantly be made queen if she can only get to the other side of the colossal chessboard. Fans of Carroll will also delight in the inclusion of "Alice's Adventures Underground," the original unpublished manuscript written for the three daughters of a family friend that would later be transformed into "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Complete with the original drawings by John Tenniel, this luxurious leather-bound edition is a steal for new readers and Carroll fans alike.
