Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Giraud, Marina (illustrator). nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The British have landed.again! In this heartfelt coming of age story, Ole Charlie, the club's Guardian Angel since the Book of Charlie narrates another adventure. This one with an international twist. The Pompey Hollow Book Club novels are lighthearted nostalgia about growing up in the heart and the shadows of WWII. The club started when they were all nine, just after the War - and, truth be known, it had little to do with books. The name was a convenience to their club of valor, enabling them to get out of the house for club meetings - even on school nights. Mary Crane has been the club president since 1949 - primarily because she could spell, and hit a home run. Now they are all teens. Antil takes pride in the historic detail of his backdrops - researching the War years and early 1950s rural America - times he grew up in. Many of the main characters are real. The adventures get taller with the telling but they have accurate roots in the times and foundations in truth. The War that killed seventy million people presented in an interesting way so as to encourage a better understanding among today's young adult - making a point we mustn't forget this War and its heroes. In this adventure - book three in the series - we find Mary Crane overseeing the club's volunteering to do the chores for poor old Farmer Parker's farm - watching over his team of horses and some milking cows - bringing the hay down into the barn while he's bedridden with a badly sprained back. In doing so a biplane giving State Fair plane rides goes off course and nearly crashes on his farm. Rushing to the pilot's rescue, the club members unwittingly step into their most spirited adventure yet - this time a need to out trick a professional pickpocket at the State Fair who happens to be in a traveling Sherlock Holmes Players company from England. Jerome Mark Antil is the seventh child of a seventh son - of a seventh son. Born at sunrise it's been told by Mary Holman Antil and Michael C. Antil Sr., that he was the first of eight siblings to stay awake all day and sleep through the night from the moment he was born. 'My dad was a baker from the 1929 Great Depression through the post-War 1950s. As a young boy, I'd ride with him all throughout central and northern New York visiting grocers and U.S. Army bases; baseball parks and bread lines as he sold his bread, hot dog buns, pies and cakes. My Dad was 'Big Mike' and I loved listening to his timeless stories and tall tales - stopping at fishing holes along the way. All day rides with Big Mike - his Buick my Steamboat - his grand stories and an entire world at War my Mississippi.'.

The Long Road From Unilateral Enforcement to International Consensus / Ariel Ezrachi & Jiri Kindl -- This book is inspired by the international movement towards the criminalisation of cartel conduct over the last decade. Led by US enforcers, criminalisation has been supported by a growing number of regulators and governments. It derives its support from the simple yet forceful proposition that criminal sanctions, particularly jail time, are the most effective deterrent to such activity. However, criminalisation is much more complex than that basic proposition suggests. There is complexity both in terms of the various forces that are driving and shaping the movement (economic, political and social) and in the effects on the various actors involved in it (government, enforcement agencies, the business community, judiciary, legal profession and general public). Featuring contributions from authors who have been at the forefront of the debate around the world, this substantial 19-chapter volume captures the richness of the criminalisation phenomenon and considers its implications for building an effective criminal cartel regime, particularly outside of the US. It adopts a range of approaches, including general theoretical perspectives (from criminal theory, economics, political science, regulation and criminology).

First edition of this "unrivalled encyclopaedia of knowledge about all aspects of 19th-century and earlier Arabia" (ODNB), published in an edition of a putative 500 copies. This copy with an engaging provenance: Thomas Herbert Lewin (1839-1916), army officer and colonial administrator, with his armorial bookplate. Arriving at Ma'an and Petra, modern-day Jordan, in May 1875, Doughty spent a year in Damascus learning Arabic in preparation for what was intended to be a short journey south to study the Nabataean rock inscriptions at Mada'in Salih, modern-day Saudi Arabia. He set out in November 1876 with the pilgrim caravan and ended up wandering for two years, his adventures including a sojourn with nearby Bedouin, a visit to Mohammed ibn Rashid, ruler of northern Arabia, a period of imprisonment by a Turkish commandant at Khaybar, a series of dangerous episodes at Buraydah, 'Unayzah, and Mecca, a stay with the sharif of Mecca at Ta'if, and his final emergence at Jiddah on 2 August 1878. His famous account, which comprises almost 1,000 pages of painstaking detail, much of which has been confirmed by later travellers, was much favoured by T. E. Lawrence, who used it as his main guidebook to the region nearly 30 years later and "had tried to persuade the government to issue parts of [it] as a handbook for officers serving in the Near East" (Howard, p. 11). Lawrence was instrumental in convincing Cape to publish a second edition in 1921, to which he contributed an introduction. "In a notable contemporary review in Academy, Sir Richard Francis Burton praised [Arabia Deserta's] scientific knowledge and its style So reliable was the book's anthropology of the Bedouin peoples and its topography, that British intelligence mined it for information during the first and second world wars. Doughty's contributions to all areas of Arabian knowledge continue to be praised by scholars" (ODNB). Burton's praise is enlarged upon in a recent monograph by Stephen E. Tabachnik (the author of Doughty's entry in ODNB): "In spite of recent claims for the virtues of Darwin's Origin of Species (1859) as a work of art as well as a scientific text, only in the case of Arabia Deserta can it be truly said that the art of the book is worthy of its most important scientific explorations and discoveries. [Doughty] unites the scientific observer and incomparable prose stylist" (Tabachnik, p. 1). Provenance: Thomas Herbert Lewin (1839-1916), army officer and colonial administrator, with his armorial bookplate. Lewin was educated at Addiscombe Military College and served during the Indian Rebellion. After holding various administrative posts, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent for the unregulated Hill Tracts. "His abilities as an administrator led him to be regarded with affection by the local tribes and his work in understanding the language and culture of the region was of lasting significance. From his experiences he wrote The Hill Tracts of Chittagong and the Dwellers Therein (Calcutta, 1869) and The Wild Races of South-Eastern India (1870)" (The National Archives). Further books followed, notably a memoir of his time in India, A Fly on the Wheel (1884). Lewin had a wide circle of friends, including the novelist George Meredith and the artist Edward Burne-Jones. It is not unlikely that Doughty may have been among them. Mounted on the title page verso is an original photographic portrait of Doughty (silver gelatin print measuring 103 x 83 mm). This is described by the National Portrait Gallery who do not identify the photographer - as "the prime image of Doughty in later middle age" and was used as the frontispiece to the 1908 Duckworth edition of Arabia Deserta but shorn of its background. The present photograph shows Doughty seated in the sunlit garden of a house, whose mature arboretum and heavily vine-clad brick walls dressed with Portland stone, is certainly reminiscent of Lewin's home, Parkhurst, at Abinger near Dorking With an autograph letter signed (dated 4 February 1926) from Herbert Mayow Adams (1893-1985), librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge, to Dr Bidder (probably the marine biologist George Parker Bidder (1863-1953), an acquaintance of Lewin) thanking him for offering this copy on behalf of Lewin's widow.
