Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Charles Dickens created some of the most memorable characters in English literature. But just what became of the convict that frightened young Pip in Great Expectations? Was he guilty, or framed? And what really did become of Edwin Drood? Was the case ever solved? Mike Ashley presents over 25 vivid new whodunnits from the world of Dickens - recorded for posterity by such writers as Michael Pearce, Amy Myers, Peter Tremayne, Alanna Knight, Kage Baker, and Edward D. Hoch. Many of the stories feature one or more of Dickens's characters, as a sleuth or as the victim of crime; while others are set in Dickens's real life, with him investigating people closely associated with him, such as Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell or Hablot Browne. Interlinking the stories is a narrative that brings alive Dickens's own life and part in the early development of crime sleuthing. The stories include: Miss Havisham's Revenge by Alanna Knight, in which we discover the part Estella Havisham played in the fate of Bentley Drummle; Murder in Murray's Court by David Stuart Davies, in which Oliver Twist has to help the Artful Dodger who has been accused of murder; The Thorn of Anxiety by Keith Miles, in which the mystery of Edwin Drood is at last solved; The Divine Nature by Kate Ellis, in which David Copperfield finds himself investigating the disappearance of Edward Murdstone; The Letter by Joan Lock, in which the skills of Inspector Bucket are once again put to the test in solving a crime that apparently never happened. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. New York. 2002. Henry Holt. Uncorrected Galley. Very Good in Wrappers. 0805054081. 323 pages. paperback. keywords: Literature America. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Six months after losing his wife and two young sons in an airplane crash, Vermont professor David Zimmer spends his waking hours mired in a blur of alcoholic grief and self-pity. Then, watching television one night, he stumbles upon a clip from a lost film by silent comedian Hector Mann. Zimmer's interest is piqued, and he soon finds himself embarking on a journey around the world to research a book on this mysterious figure, who vanished from sight in 1929 and has been presumed dead for sixty years. When the book is published the following year, a letter turns up in Zimmer's mailbox bearing a return address from a small town in New Mexico inviting him to meet Hector. Torn between doubt and belief, Zimmer hesitates, until one night a strange woman appears on his doorstep and makes the decision for him, changing his life forever. The Book of Illusions is, in the words of Peter Carey, suffused with warmth and illuminated by its narrator's hard won wisdom. This artful and elegant novel may be Auster's best ever.' inventory #36753.

Hardcover. Condition: Used - Good. Art icon Jeff Koons lying on a giant plastic ball, Richard Serra disappearing into one of his vast steel sculptures, 'king of theater' Claus Peymann sporting a cardboard crown ever since shooting his portrait of painter A.R. Penck in 1994, Oliver Mark (born 1963) has photographed countless artists, actors, politicians and other celebrities. Sometimes concentrating only on the subject against the most minimal setting possible, sometimes placing them in front of an artful background, Mark presents the rich and famous in constantly new and consistently trenchant ways, bringing their less apparent characteristics to light and casting them in disorienting circumstances. Other of Mark's subjects included here are Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, George Lucas, Sir Ridley Scott, Jenny Holzer, Mia Farrow, Norbert Tadeusz, Kenny Scharf, Georg Baselitz, David Chipperfield, Luc Tuymans, Cate Blanchett, Balthus and Sir Peter Ustinov. Besides Mark's most successful portraits, this volume also contains some of his most beautiful fashion photographs and other stills, many of which have appeared in several well-known magazines. Texts by Margit J. Mayer, Christoph Amend, Christian Boros and others round off this entertaining 'best-of' collection. Edited by Achim Heine. Text by Christoph Amend, Christian Boros, Margit J. "Heroes and Villains" is a unique collaboration with the caricaturist Gerald Scarfe, which will also be the subject of a documentary on BBC Four. In the book, portraits of well-known figures, selected from the National Portrait Gallery's collections, are quirkily juxtaposed with caricatures that depict their villainous side. Gerald Scarfe, Britain's best-known caricaturist, provides these artful, glib distortions, many of which have been specially commissioned. They reveal the wit and vision of an exceptional draughtsman at work. Joanna Lumley, Sir Peter Hall and Melvyn Bragg are just a few of the people who argue their views for and against, on subjects as wide ranging as Henry VIII, Oswald Mosley, Virginia Woolf, Princess Diana and David and Victoria Beckham. Then, watching television one night, he stumbles upon a lost film by Hector Mann, and finds himself enraptured. Mann was a comic genius of the silent cinema, his trademark a fluttering black moustache. One January morning in 1929, at the height of his fame, he walked out of his house and was never heard from again. Zimmer's fascination with Mann's work leads him to write an appreciative book. Then out of nowhere comes a letter from New Mexico, supposedly written by Mann's wife ("Hector has read your book and would like to meet you.") Could Hector Mann still be alive? Zimmer is torn between doubt and belief, until a strange woman appears on his doorstep one night and makes the decision for him, changing his life forever. Written with breathtaking urgency and precision, this stunning novel plunges the reader into a universe in which the comic and the tragic, the real and the imagined, the violent and the tender dissolve into one another. "The Book of Illusions" is Paul Auster's richest, most emotionally charged novel yet.' *** 'An elegant and enthralling new summit in Paul Auster's art.' - Jonathan Lethem. *** 'This artful and elegant novel may be Auster's best ever.' - Peter Carey [Quote and review quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper]. ***First impression of the first UK edition, in the original dustwrapper, in collectable near fine condition. **For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Documentary film-maker and collector extraordinary, Jonathan Gili (1943-2004) was also a quirky small-press publisher who deployed his eye for design not only for books as grand as John Betjeman's Metro-Land (1977, with lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte) but also for calendars for his sometime school-friend David Game's group of tutorial colleges, founded in 1974. Latterly, he used his own artful photographs; his early calendars deployed a talented team of illustrators. The six illustrators for this catalogue are each allotted two months: the youngest, Chloe Cheese (1952-), the oldest, Harold Jones (1904-1992) - best loved for Lavender's Blue.

  • Softcover. Condition: gut. 1997. Peter Lindbergh's impression of women is a respectful and complimentary one. He sees them as well-grounded in character first, rather than as artful silhouettes. His work often grittily outlines women's substantial personalities by showing them operating independently within the urban and industrial manliness of modern society. The volume contains female nudity that would probably earn the work an "R" rating if it were a motion picture. This volume contains 189 Novatone plates that provide the definitive collection of Mr. Lindbergh's fashion and portrait work. The pages are large and the images well reproduced. The main problem with the book is that center creases devaste many images, which should have been fold-outs. The introduction by Martin Harrison is quite well done, and well worth your time and attention. ". . . [I]t is evident his models enjoy being photo.
