Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Sitting in the purple heather, Carrie carefully opens the tattered cover of the journal, the gold-edged pages catching the sunlight shimmering off the surface of the loch. The handwriting is unmistakable. The words inside will shatter everything she thought she knew about her family. Carrie Anderson searches under the flowerpot by the bright blue door and finds the keys to the little whitewashed cottage. Still recovering from the heart-wrenching loss of her beautiful sister, Carrie hopes that staying on the edge of the glittering loch, where the siblings used to spend summers with their great-aunt Maud, will help her heal from her grief. On a trip to the tiny village store, Carrie literally bumps into ex-Navy officer turned chef Rory McRae. Tall and broad shouldered, at first Rory is infuriatingly distant, but his enthusiasm for his farm-to-table restaurant lights up his rich brown eyes. When he tells Carrie that he's understaffed, she is quick to offer help. She soon finds Rory's warm smile and playful jokes are a balm to her heart. Suddenly, Carrie begins to feel less alone. But then she discovers a diary her aunt Maud kept as a young woman after World War Two. The faded sepia photograph of a baby boy tucked into the back reveals a heartbreaking secret about her family she can scarcely believe. Opening up to Rory, could the discovery of a long-lost relative finally heal the loneliness that has been plaguing Carrie's heart? Or will the secrets the diary unravels destroy her hope for a new future in Loch Cameron? Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. We've gone through three volumes of West Virginia biographies and extracted over 125 of them to make this newly printed 8 1/2" x 11" booklet. The biographies are for persons living outside of the City of Charleston, but within Kanawha County, West Virginia, during or prior to 1928. With 85 pages of newsprint-size type, it's obvious they're full of detailed info -- ancestors, occupations, business enterprises, education, military service, siblings, spouse, children, honors, etc. The biographies were taken from West Virginia in History, Life, Literature and Industry by Morris Purdy Shawkey, published in 1928. The booklet is printed on opaque paper with the front cover protected with a vinyl sheet. A similar booklet is available with biographies of Charleston residents, while a History of Kanawha County, compiled from 8 books, can be found in a third booklet. - A.L. "I've had what I think is the richest, most self~fulfilling kind of experience that a human being has. I have been living what I believe . "~WALTER REUTHER. For more than thirty years, Walter Reuther was one of the most dynamic and controversial labor leaders in the United States. His untimely death on May 9, 1970, ended an exciting chapter in union history and American life. In this fascinating, fast moving biography Frank Cormier and William J. Eaton present a definitive portrait of Walter Reuther who rose from the ranks of labor to become one of a small company of American labor statesmen. Here we see young Reuther being indoctrinated in trade unionism at home; we go with him on a trip around the world including the controversial period spent working in a Soviet auto plant; we relive the bitter days when the fledgling U.A.W. battled against the industry .giants ~ Ford, G.M., Chrysler; we are on lookers as the auto workers emerge from their siege of Detroit, battered but victorious; we watch Walter Reuther advance from a position as a worker in a Ford plant to head of one of the most powerful unions in the world. Across the anecdote~filled pages march a steady stream of illustrious names: John L. Lewis, Philip Murray, George Meany, Sidney Hillman, Eleanor Roosevelt, FDR, Truman, Stevenson, Kennedy, Johnson, Khrushchev. For Reuther the labor movement was more than just a means of getting a fatter pay envelope; it was also an effective tool for social progress. This vision led him to champion such causes as civil rights and civil liberties, a program to provide adequate housing for all Americans, improved medical care, consumer protection, a world free from poverty and disease, a clean environment, nuclear disarmament, and a world community at peace. Reuther, a genius at collective bargaining also led the U.A.W.'s pioneering for such plans as company~paid hospital~surgica lmedical benefits, cost~of~living protection, and guaranteed annual income. When a small jet plane crashed into a wooded area near Pellston, Michigan, the life and career of Walter Reuther came to an abrupt end, and his friends and enemies, his associates and strangers mourned the loss of this man who so intensely lived what he believed.
