Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1980, Sylvie Rancourt and her boyfriend moved to Montreal from rural Northern Quebec. With limited formal education or training, they had a hard time finding employment, so Sylvie began dancing in strip clubs. These experiences formed the backbone of the first Canadian autobiographical comic book, Melody, which Rancourt wrote, drew, and distributed, starting in 1985. Later, Rancourt collaborated with artist Jacques Boivin, who translated and drew a new series of Melody comics for the American market - the comics were an instant cult classic. The Rancourt drawn-and-written comics have never before seen English publication. These stories are compelling without ever being voyeuristic or self-pitying, and her drawings are formally innovative while maintaining a refreshingly frank and engaging clarity. Whether she's divulging her first experiences dancing for an audience or sharing moments from her life at home, her storytelling is straightforward and never sensationalized. With a knowing wink at the reader, Rancourt shares a world that, in someone else's writing, might be scandalous or seedy, but in hers is fully realized, real, and often funny. The Drawn and Quarterly edition of Melody, featuring an introduction from Chris Ware (Building Stories), will place this masterpiece of early autobiographical comics in its rightful place at the heart of the comics canon. A longlost memoir about being a stripper. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The first book from the Chicago author of the stunning Building Stories (The New York Times) is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally impaired "everyman," who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. This haunting and unshakable book will change the way you look at your world. Time magazineTheres no writer alive whose work I love more than Chris Ware. Zadie Smith, New York Times bestselling author of Swing Time An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked. In the tradition of Art Spiegelman's "Maus" comes "Jimmy Corrigan", a comic book masterpiece seven years in the making by one of the medium's brightest young stars. It's "Gasoline Alley" as written by Dickens and Joyce. Color illustrations throughout. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. 3rd Edition. Third edition, December 2004. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. "This volume reprints what many consider to be Herriman's prime: his Sunday strips from 1925 and 1926, two full years of strips printed full-page in their original black and white, plus material never collected before. [] Fantagraphics is proud to re-present KRAZY KAT to a new generation of readers. Each volume in this series reprints two full years of Sunday strips, or 104 full-page, black-and-white Sunday strips (Herriman did not incorporate color into the strip until 1935). KRAZY KAT is a love story, focusing on the relationship of its three main characters. Krazy Kat adored Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz Mouse hated Krazy Kat, the expression of which was in throwing bricks at Krazy's head. Offisa Pup loved Krazy and sought to protect 'her' (Herriman always maintained that Krazy was genderless), mostly by throwing Ignatz in jail. Each of the characters was ignorant of the other's true motivations. This simple structure allowed Herriman to build entire worlds of meaning into the actions, building thematic depth that led critics like Gilbert Seldes and e. e. cummings to recognize Herriman's genius almost immediately. Each of Fantagraphics' KRAZY & IGNATZ volumes is designed by Chris Ware, creator of the wildly successful ACME Novelty Library series. This beautiful volume includes material never collected before. Black-and-white comic strips and illustrations throughout." [publisher copy] "Herriman's KRAZY KAT is finally getting its due thanks to this new and beautiful volume from Fantagraphics. Lovingly designed, this is a great introduction to one of the best works of the 20th century. Let's hope more are on the way soon."--Pennsylvania Patriot-News. "The primal comedy plays out in thousands of ways, drawn in an incomparable design sense against a gorgeous stylized backdrop of the American Southwest and delivered in Herriman's hilarious dialogue--half-invented, half quasi-Joycean wordplay."--Publishers Weekly. Pristine paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a tight binding w/no creases in spine.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. A major graphic novel event more than 18 years in progress: part one of the ongoing bifurcated masterwork from the brilliant and beloved author of Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth and Building Stories.Rusty Brown is a fully interactive, full-color articulation of the time-space interrelationships of three complete consciousnesses in the first half of a single midwestern American day and the tiny piece of human grit about which they involuntarily orbit. A sprawling, special snowflake accumulation of the biggest themes and the smallest moments of life, Rusty Brown literately and literally aims at nothing less than the coalescence of one half of all of existence into a single museum-quality picture story, expertly arranged to present the most convincingly ineffable and empathetic illusion of experience for both life-curious readers and traditional fans of standard reality. From childhood to old age, no frozen plotline is left unthawed in the entangled stories of a child who awakens without superpowers, a teen who matures into a paternal despot, a father who stores his emotional regrets on the surface of Mars and a late-middle-aged woman who seeks the love of only one other person on planet Earth. Rusty Brown, a normal, nerdy, bullied, disenfranchised tweenage kid in Omaha, Nebraska, is just trying to survive a regular junior-high school day with his best friend Chalky White. But in this deeply Ware-ian world, it won't be easy. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
