Softcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The epic true story of Kim Philby, the Cold Wars most infamous spy, from the master storyteller (San Francisco Chronicle) and author of Prisoners of the Castle. Now an MGM+ series starring Damian Lewis, Guy Pearce, and Anna Maxwell Martin[A Spy Among Friends] reads like a story by Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, or John le Carré, leavened with a dollop of P. G. Wodehouse.-Walter Isaacson, New York Times Book ReviewWho was Kim Philby? Those closest to him-like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIAs head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton-knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britains counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.Every word uttered in confidence to Philby made its way to Moscow, sinking almost every important Anglo-American spy operation for twenty years and costing hundreds of lives. So how was this cunning double-agent finally exposed? In A Spy Among Friends, Ben Macintyre expertly weaves the heart-pounding tale of how Philby almost got away with it all-and what happened when he was finally unmasked.Based on personal papers and never-before-seen British intelligence files and told with heart-pounding suspense and keen psychological insight, A Spy Among Friends is a fascinating portrait of a Cold War spy and the countrymen who remained willfully blind to his treachery.ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Shelf Awareness.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very nice copy of this very scrce book which is assumed to be a first impression. Clean tan cloth boards look bright, albeit with a small area of discolouration/loss of dye in the centre of the front board, possibly as a result of a small drink spill at some point. The pages look clean throughout, albeit slightly toned, more especially to the end papers and page block edges. Nothing at all severe though but mentioned here forthe purpose of clarity. There is a neat name inscription in ink pen on the ffep of one Richard Mather, dated July 1929. Rather a charming copy in all.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - A charming, witty and wide-ranging collection of brief biographies of closeted gay men in modern and early modern history, Hidden: The Intimate Lives of Gay Men Past and Present includes colorful snapshots of such well-known men as Horatio Alger, Thomas Eakins, King Edward II, Alfred C. Kinsey, and Siegfried Wagner. Readers will find joy and sorrow and pleasure and pain in these 400 biographies of men who were forced to live hidden lives. All were caught in the tension between the torment of secrecy and the calamity of revelation. How did they manage their difficult lives How indeed did they survive One who did was James Brooke. He turned his inheritance into a 142 ton schooner, sailed for the East Indies, seized the northern part of Borneo and proclaimed himself Rajah of Sarawak. Among those who did not survive was Jan Quisthout Van der Linde, a soldier in New Amsterdam (not yet New York). He was stripped of his arms, his sword broken at his feet. He was then tied in a sack, thrown into the Hudson River and drowned until dead. While illuminating individuals, the book also provides rich cultural and historical content, including the trial of those over-the-top transvestites Ernest Boulton 'Stella of the Strand' and Frederick 'Fanny' Park; and a delightful description of the 5th Marquess of Anglesey as he parades along the boulevards of Paris rouged, powdered and perfumed, cradling an equally perfumed poodle festooned with pink ribbons. Written in clear, concise, and lively prose, Hidden offers a substantive and extensive look at men who lived their lives in conflict with their sexuality.

EXCERPT FROM FRONT ADVERTISEMENT: "The miscellany which follows is compiled entirely from the writings of native or resident citizens of Charleston. The sources of the compilation are not those of professional authorship. The writers of the South are persons, generally, of other professions and pursuits. What is done among us, in a literary point of view, is the work of the amateur, a labor of stealth or recreation, employed as a relief from other tasks and duties. From this fact the reader will be able to account for that air of didactic gravity, that absence of variety, and of the study of artistical attributes, which would not strike him so obviously had the sources of the collection been found in the more various fields of a national literature. he will discover, however, that in most of the pieces which follow, there is a liveliness of fancy, a fluency of expression, and a general readiness of resource, indicating such a presence of the imaginative faculty, as leaves no doubt of the capacity of the community, from which the work is drawn, to engage with great success in the active pursuits of literature. [.]" CONDITION: Cover shows overall wear and soiling, yet ornamentation is lovely. Pages have evenly toned with moderate foxing throughout. Spine is cocked. Completely unmarked except for previous owners names on the front flyleaf. Occasional closed and open tears along the foredge of the textblock, yet text is still legible. Binding is cracked at the gutter between pages 196 and 197 and again between pages 340 and 341, with textblock separating from the binding, yet still attached at the head. All pages are present. Even with its flaws, this charming copy is still quite readable with gentle care. VG-. Full refund if not satisfied.
