The cover art design emulates a worn-out poster, and the films of Federico Fellini are a strong influence on the mood throughout the book, especially "La Dolce Vita." Third novel in the Anno Dracula series, set in an alternative history where Van Helsing never killed Dracula, and where many literary and cinematic characters from our universe are real. Characters encountered in the novel include Morticia and Gomez of "The Addams Family," Mr. Big from Ian Fleming's "Live and Let Die," Barnabas Collins from "Dark Shadows," inspector Clouseau of "The Pink Panther," Michael Corleone from "The Godfather," Honoria Cornelius from Michael Moorcock's "Jerry Cornelius," the figure of Fantomas created by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, Dr. Fu Manchu, Herbert West, Irma Vep, Lord Greystoke, Clark Kent, Tom Ripley, Professor Moriarity, and a couple dozen of this ilk. The series is kind of amazing for weaving cultural references from other authors and filmmakers into a tidy whole.

Le film est une adaptation du roman de Frederick O'Brien White Shadows in the South Seas, partie d'une trilogie basée sur les expériences vécues par l'auteur dans les îles du Pacifique, publié en 1919. Produit par Hunt Stromberg et Irving Thalberg pour la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, le film a été tourné pendant cinq mois à Tahiti.
