One of 'The Most Wanted Crime Novels of 2023' Crimefictionlover.comJoin a heart-racing road trip across 1970s America as two cousins make the heist of their lives and must avoid the cops and criminals hot on their tails. Its the summer of 74Richard Nixon has resigned from office, CB radios are the hot new thing, and in the great state of Texas two cousins hatch a plan to drive $1 million worth of stolen weed to Idaho, where some lunatic is gearing up to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered motorcycle. But with a vengeful sheriff on their tail and the revered and feared marijuana kingpin of Central Texas out to get his stash back, Chuck and Dean are in for the ride of their lives if they can make it out aliveScott Von Doviak, longtime pop-culture journalist for The A.V. Club, Film Threat, The Hollywood Reporter, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, made a splash with his debut novel, Charlesgate Confidential, which Stephen King called 'terrific' and 'a fun machinethe white-knuckle kind.' With Lowdown Road, he cements his reputation for pedal-to-the-metal storytelling that also makes you think about just who we are and where our darker roads might lead us. 'A wild ride' Kirkus Reviews'Razor-sharp dialogue and high-octane actionever-escalating grindhouse madness.' Publishers Weekly Praise for Scott Von Doviak:'Charlesgate Confidential is terrific.' Stephen King'Charlesgate Confidential is a riveting tale, a hard-boiled art heist worthy of Dashiell Hammett in his prime.' Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One'Charlesgate Confidential is the sort of canny, witty crime novel that doesnt come along often enough. Scott Von Doviak is terrific at Boston voices and a fearless plotter. The crew at Hard Case Crime has found another gem! May they never reform.' Owen King, author of Double Feature and co-author of Sleeping Beauties'Scott Von Doviaks Charlesgate Confidential is a corker! With its intriguing plot that spreads across three distinct time periods, quirky characters quick with the witty repartee, and an amazing sense of place and time, it had me reading way past my designated bedtime. Boston, and its love for the home team GO RED SOX really comes alive in the various years depicted. Couldnt imagine Charlesgate Confidential not making many Crime/Mystery Best Of Lists next year.' Thomas E. Sniegoski, New York Times bestselling author Join a heart-racing road trip across 1970s America as two cousins make the heist of their lives and must avoid the cops and criminals hot on their tails. No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original publisher's hand-colored double-sided page that shows a county map of Cambridgeshire on the front and four road strip maps around Yorkshire on the back. The maps are accompanied by surrounding text of the counties and towns and feature beautiful, decorative flourishes in vibrant colors such as blue, yellow, green, pink, orange, and turquoise. The Cambridgeshire map shows roads and towns with the watercoloring delineating regional boundaries. The side with the strip map view uses watercoloring to highlight towns, water features, and hilly terrain. The strip maps include towns such as Kingston, Beverley, Kilham, Flamborough, and Burlington. No date, circa 1720-1764. Page measures 5 1/2" x 8." Maps and page are very clean and intact with minimal age wear. The "front" is labeled Page "106" (the side that shows Cambridgeshire) and the "back" is Page "105" (the side with the strip maps and a description of the town of Beverley). Title is in a decorative cartouche. Scale of distance in English miles is located in lower-left corner of the Cambridgeshire map. Compass roses are located within each strip map. These maps are originally from John Owen and Emanuel Bowen's Britannia Depicta which was a comprehensive road atlas for England and Wales. John Owen was an antiquarian and lawyer who wrote the text for the atlas. Emanuel Bowen (1694?-1767) was an English cartographer and geographer who worked for George II of England and Louis XV of France, and he made the engravings for the atlas. Their maps were based off of earlier road maps by John Ogilby (1600-1676).

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Canwe move beyond borders that divide us without losing our identity? Overthe past decade, theyearning for rootedness, for being part of a story bigger than oneself, hasflared up as a cultural force to be reckoned with. Theres much to affirm in thisdesire to belong to a people. That means pride in all that is admirable in thenation to which we belong and repentance for its historic sins. Afocus on national identity, ofcourse, can lead to darker places. The new nationalists, who in Westerncountries often appeal to the memory of a Christian past, applaud whengovernments fortify borders to keep out people who are fleeing for their lives.(Needless to say, such actions are contrary to the Christian faith.) Is ouryearning for roots doomed to lead to a heartless politics of exclusion? Doesmaintaining group or national identity require borders guarded with lethalviolence? Theanswer isnt artificial schemes for universal brotherhood, such as a universal language. Our differencesare what make a community human. Might the true ground for community lie deepereven than shared nationality or language? After all, the biblical vision ofhumankinds ultimate future has every tribe and language and people andnation coming together beyond all borders but still as themselves. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A beguiling and disarming novel about a mysterious group of children who appear to a disfigured recluse and his country doctor. In a sprawling estate, willfully secluded, lives Morgan Fletcher, the disfigured heir to a fortune of mysterious origins. Morgan spends his days in quiet study, avoiding his reflection in mirrors and the lake at the end of his garden. One day, two children, Moira and David, appear. Morgan takes them in, giving them free rein of the mansion he shares with his housekeeper, Engel. Then more children start to show up. 'The Children's Home' is an inversion of a modern day fairy tale. Lambert writes from the perspective of the visited, weaving elements of psychological suspense, abandonment, isolation, and the grotesque - as well as the glimmers of goodness - buried deep within the soul. AUTHOR: Five facts about Charles Lambert 1. Beryl Bainbridge described him as 'a seriously good writer'. 2. His memoir 'With a Zero at its Heart' was named one of The Guardian's Ten Best Books of the Year in 2014. 3. He was born in the UK but has lived in Italy since 1980, exactly halfway between Rome and Naples. 4. Charles is currently a university teacher, academic translator and freelance editor for international agencies. 5. Past occupations include kitchen hand, shop assistant, medical journal editor, guidebook writer, receptionist, teacher of political science and journalist with ANSA, the Italian news agency. REVIEWS: "The Children's Home is a not-nice sort of fairy tale, where the magic doesn't sparkle prettily but boils and oozes, where the Prince has a face of tatters, where the children take grown-up revenge on their monsters. It is also, somehow, a searching, empathetic narrative about forgiveness." Owen King, author of Double Feature: A Novel "Charles Lambert could one day attain classic status." Maggie Gee "This genre-bending debut is by turns dread-inducing and heartwarming, a masterful exploration of whether innocence can truly sprout from ignorance .a magical, mesmerizing tale about the courage it takes to confront the unknown." Booklist, STARRED review A beguiling, disarming novel about a mysterious group of children who unexpectedly visit a disfigured recluse in his country home. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Full number line present. Personally flat signed by the author directly to the full title page. Not a tip in. Not a bookplate. Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for years of worry free reading/collecting! Photos available upon request. An ambitious and warmhearted first novel (Entertainment Weekly) from Owen King the epic tale of a young man coming to terms with his life in the aftermath of the spectacularly bizarre failure of his first film. SAM DOLAN is a young man coming to terms with his life in the process and aftermath of making his first film. He has a difficult relationship with his father, B-movie actor Booth Dolan a boisterous, opinionated, lying lothario whose screen legacy falls somewhere between cult hero and pathetic. Allie, Sam s dearly departed mother, was a woman whose only fault, in Sam s eyes, was her eternal affection for his father. Also included in the cast of indelible characters: a precocious, frequently violent half-sister; a conspiracy-theorist second wife; an Internet-famous roommate; a contractor who can t stop expanding his house; a happy-go-lucky college girlfriend and her husband, a retired Yankees catcher; the morose producer of a true-crime show; and a slouching indie-film legend. Not to mention a tragic sex monster. Unraveling the tumultuous, decades-spanning story of the Dolan family s friends, lovers, and adversaries, Double Feature is about letting go of everything regret, resentment, dignity, moving pictures, the dead and taking it again from the top. Against the backdrop of indie filmmaking, college campus life, contemporary Brooklyn, and upstate New York, Owen King s epic debut novel combines propulsive storytelling with mordant wit and brims with a deep understanding of the trials of ambition and art, of relationships and life, and of our attempts to survive it all.
