On the brink of fatherhood, writer Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), facing the prospect of having to make dietary choices on a child's behalf, set about to find answers for himself. This quest ultimately required him to visit factory farms in the middle of the night, dissect the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong. Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir, and his own detective work, EATING ANIMALS explores the many stories we use to justify our eating habits - folklore and pop culture, family habits & national myth. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - From the bestselling author of Eating Animals and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - a brilliant, fresh take on climate change and what we can do about itClimate crisis is the single biggest threat to human survival. And it is happening right now. We all understand that time is running out - but do we truly believe it And, caught between the seemingly unimaginable and the apparently unthinkable, how can we take the first step towards action, to arrest our race to extinction We can begin with our knife and fork. The link between farming animals and the climate crisis is barely discussed, because giving up our meat-based diets feels like an impossible ask. But we don't have to go cold turkey. Cutting out animal products for just part of the day is enough to change the world. The task of saving the planet will involve a great reckoning with ourselves - with our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. But we have done it before and we can do it again. Collective action is the way to save our home and way of life. And it all starts with what we eat, and don't eat, for breakfast. With his distinctive wit, insight and humanity, Jonathan Safran Foer presents the essential debate of our time as no one else could, bringing it to vivid and urgent life and offering us all a much-needed way out.

In the book of Genesis, when God calls out, Abraham before ordering him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, Abraham responds, Here I am. Later, when Isaac calls out, My father before asking him why there is no animal to slaughter, Abraham responds, Here I am. How do we fulfill our conflicting duties as father, husband, and son; wife and mother; child and adult? Jew and American? How can we claim our own identities when our lives are linked so closely to others ? These are the questions at the heart of Jonathan Safran Foer s first novel in eleven years a work of extraordinary scope and heartbreaking intimacy. Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, D.C., HERE I AM is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear. Showcasing the same high-energy inventiveness, hilarious irreverence, and emotional urgency that readers loved in his earlier work, " Here I Am "is Foer s most searching, hard-hitting, and grandly entertaining novel yet. It not only confirms Foer s stature as a dazzling literary talent but reveals a novelist who has fully come into his own as one of our most important writers. Author also of EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED and EXTREMELY LOUD, INCREDIBLY CLOSE.
