Softcover. Condition: Good. The work of John Jodzio has already made waves across the literary community. Some readers noticed his nimble blending of humor with painful truths reminded them of George Saunders. His creativity and fresh voice reminded others of Wells Tower's Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned. But with his new collection, Jodzio creates a class of his own.Knockout is the unified collection of stories that create flawless portraits of deeply flawed figures on the edge of the American Dream. A recovering drug addict gets tricked into stealing a tiger. A man buys a used sex chair from his neighbor. A woman suffering from agoraphobia raises her son completely indoors. An alcoholic runs a bed and breakfast with the son from his deceased wife's first marriage. These people will admit that their chances have passed them by. These people know they were born on the wrong side of the tracks, and their dreams will remain unreachable, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming. Yet readers wont be fooled by the funny premises Jodzio steers these stories into deeper places, creating a brilliant examination of those on the fringes of modern life. With its quirky humor, compelling characters, and unexpected sincerity, Knockout by John Jodzio is poised to become his breakout book, drawing a wide readership to this provocative and talented young writer.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. I know lots of things now that I'm dead. Peter from Apartment Two has a spastic bladder. My former boss Morgan keeps her toenails in a gold jewellery box. My brother and his wife are trying for a baby. I always excuse myself before things get too heated.I don't know much about my mother yet. I am waiting for grief to catch her, but she mostly seems ashamed - of her body, of what it made.A mother cuts her daughter's hair because her own starts falling out. A woman leaves her boyfriend because he reminds her of a corpse; another undergoes brain surgery to try to live more comfortably in higher temperatures. A widow physically transforms into her husband so that she does not have to grieve. In She Is Haunted, these renditions of the author search for recognition and connection, and, more than anything else, small moments of empathy. But in what world will she move beyond her haunted past and find compassion for herself? With piercing insights into transnational Asian identity, intergenerational trauma and grief, the dynamics of mother-daughter relationships, the inexplicable oddities of female friendship, and the love of a good dog, Paige Clark has crafted an exquisite, moving and sophisticated debut work of fiction. Full of wit and humour, She Is Haunted announces an entrancing new literary voice as contemporary as it is unique.'The real meets the ethereal here and becomes something all its own. Clark is the best new writer in Australia and this book is like nothing else.' Robert Lukins, author of The Everlasting Sunday'The stories in She is Haunted grapple with a mix of timeless human problems and uniquely contemporary dilemmas: grief, illness, identity, and heartbreak, but also who gets custody of the dog after a break-up, bureaucratic responses to deeply personal relationship issues, and the politics of food. Paige Clark writes with wit, warmth and nuance, using precise, playful language, giving us a collection of (sometimes embarrassingly) relatable characters, sneaky insights and surprising bursts of joy.' Emily Maguire, author of Love Objects and An Isolated Incident'Paige Clark's stories contain worlds within pages. Like Carmen Maria Machado, she takes ideas and runs with them into strange, often uneasy places. From the ordinary to the bizarre, these compelling stories reveal biting truths about race, relationships and life.' Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, writer and critic'A stunning collection of short stories about identity, connection and trying to make sense of our modern world. Paige Clark is a star.' Hannah-Rose Yee, journalist and writer'A wondrous spirit animates SHE IS HAUNTED. In sentences of bracing snap and clarity, Clark's stories delight and amuse, even as they expose tender truths and secrets. An astonishing debut.' Wells Tower, author of Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned You do not know of Paige Clark, but you soon will. Soft cover. Condition: New. "A gorgeous, wise, riveting work of, among other things, cowboy noir.Honestly, I can't recall ever being this fond of a pair of psychopaths." -David Wroblewski, New York Times bestselling author of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle "A masterful, hilarious picaresque that keeps company with the best of Charles Portis and Mark Twain.a relentlessly absorbing feat of novelistic art." -Wells Tower, author of Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned "The Sisters Brothers is dark, dark, and funny, both ha ha and strange.and you'll love the characters you meet along the way." -Tom Franklin, New York Times bestselling author of Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter Patrick deWitt, a young writer whose "stop-you-in-your-tracks writing has snuck up on the world" (Los Angeles Times), brings us The Sisters Brothers, a darkly comic, outrageously inventive novel that offers readers a decidedly off-center view of the Wild, Wild West. Set against the back-drop of the great California Gold Rush, this odd and wonderful tour de force at once honors and reshapes the traditional western while chronicling the picaresque misadventures of two hired guns, the fabled Sisters brothers. The most original western since the Coen Brothers re-interpreted True Grit-you've never met anyone quite like The Sisters Brothers.

SIGNED first edition - First UK printing,a trade paperback original. Tower's very highly praised first book, a collection of short stories. In her review, Michiko Kakutani comments that this collection "decisively establishes Mr. Tower - a magazine journalist who has also won two Pushcart Prizes - as a writer of uncommon talent, a writer with Sam Shepard's radar for the violent, surreal convolutions of American society; Frederick Barthelme's keen ear for contemporary slang; and David Foster Wallace's eye for the often hilarious absurdities of contemporary life."
