Paperback. Condition: Good. Ruth and Simon Pierce's rare romantic break is shattered by devastating news: their daughter, Heather, on holiday in Cornwall with a friend's family, has disappeared. The loss is more than they - or their marriage - can bear. But time does heal, and slowly Ruth builds a new life for herself. A new husband, Andrew - even a second daughter, Beatrice. The chances that history could repeat itself are next-to-impossible - that is until, years later, a desperate phone call launches DI Will Grayson and his partner, DS Helen Walker, into an investigation which will test their professional and emotional resources to the very limit. Yet as Grayson becomes increasingly obsessed with a recently released child-abuser and Helen is drawn deeper into a destructive love affair with a married colleague, there is a real danger that their most demanding investigation yet will slip fatefully through their hands. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Chipped, with small tears, along the edges of the wrapper. Still Very Good. First Edition. Golden and Roland 974, and fig. 42. Bibliotheca Osleriana 773. Harvey Cushing, Life of Sir William Osler, Vol. II: 61-68. Osler's "real literary love at Oxford was the history of medicine. He had told Cushing that he might use his regius professorship to write it, and he got off to a magnificent start in 1906-7 with his two most important historical excursions, a far cry from the easy feel-good historia amabilis he would later be accused of fostering. The first foray, in October 1906, was what Cushing called the 'blue-ribbon event of British medicine,' the Harveian oration at the Royal College of Physicians. It was steeped in tradition, a lectureship founded by William Harvey himself in 1651. . . . Many Harveian orators used the occasion to talk about more recent medical achievements. With his reverence for 'the mighty minds of old . . . the illustrious dead,' Osler chose to make his an historical talk. But it was more than another set of profiles of the illustrious dead or a paean to medical progress. Osler had become interested in the evolution of scientific knowledge, what he called 'the growth of truth,' and he used Harvey's announcement of the discovery of the circulation of the blood as a case study of the problem of establishing new truths in the teeth of received authority" (Bliss, William Osler, p 350). Osler himself wrote this about the history of the Harveian Oration: "As Russell Reynolds remarked in 1884, 'There is one thing more . . . that this College has done for many years, and that is, by this annual Oration, to hand down to coming generations the memory of him from whom we have learned so much.' With few exceptions this has been the function of the ceremony. The College library possesses a nearly complete set. Looking over any large number, the Orations fall into three groups. In the first, fulfilling Harvey's injunction, the benefactors are commemorated. Sir William Browne's, 1751. is a good example, and typographically the best I have seen. In the second, the Orator, after a few preliminary words of praise, discourses upon the work in which he is most interested. Mead, 1723, for example, has only a word about Harvey in a learned address on Coins. The third constitutes a real contribution to the literature of the physiology of the circulation. Few give evidence of historical research; among these may be mentioned the orations of Ogle, 1880, and Payne, 1896. The last published Latin oration was by Sutherland, 1863; that for 1864 by Robt. Lee was also in Latin, but it remains in MS. in the College. Acland's, 1865, was the first in English. Sutherland appears to have suggested the change in his oration--'Non hic est locus disputare utrum necne auditoribus esset commodius, et oratori facilius orationem hanc anglicè, quàm latinè conficere.' [W. O.]" (Bibliotheca Osleriana, p. 83). With the large bookplate of Michael F. Fallon on the blank verso of the front wrapper. About Michael F. Fallon, M.D.: "Michael J. Fallon, MD was born in 1863 to Irish immigrant parents. . . . He grew up in Worcester, MA, and received his bachelor degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1884. He then attended Harvard Medical School, and received his MD in 1887. Fallon married Ella Ford, and was the father of Holy Cross graduate, John M. Fallon, MD. Dr. Fallon was the chief surgeon at St. Vincent Hospital from 1908-1933. He died at the age of 72 in 1936." The obituary in the New York Times (June 25, 1936) states "Pope Pius XI had made him a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory.".
