Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Following on from Foundation, Tudors is the second volume in Peter Ackroyd's astonishing series, The History of England. Rich in detail and atmosphere and told in vivid prose, Tudors recounts the transformation of England from a settled Catholic country to a Protestant superpower. It is the story of Henry VIII's cataclysmic break with Rome, and his relentless pursuit of both the perfect wife and the perfect heir; of how the brief reign of the teenage king, Edward VI, gave way to the violent reimposition of Catholicism and the stench of bonfires under 'Bloody Mary'. It tells, too, of the long reign of Elizabeth I, which, though marked by civil strife, plots against the queen and even an invasion force, finally brought stability. Above all, however, it is the story of the English Reformation and the making of the Anglican Church. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, England was still largely feudal and looked to Rome for direction; at its end, it was a country where good governance was the duty of the state, not the church, and where men and women began to look to themselves for answers rather than to those who ruled them. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER'A compelling vision of where the internet should go and how to get there.' Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI_A potent exploration of the power of blockchains to reshape the future of the internet - and how that affects us all - from technology entrepreneur and startup investor Chris Dixon. The internet of today is a far cry from its early promise of a decentralized, democratic network of innovation, connection and freedom. In the past decade, it has fallen almost entirely under the control of a very small group of companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook. In Read Write Own, tech visionary Chris Dixon argues that the dream of a creative, entrepreneurial internet doesn't have to die and can, in fact, be saved with blockchain networks. He separates this movement, which aims to provide a solid foundation for everything from social networks to artificial intelligence to virtual worlds, from cryptocurrency speculation - a distinction he calls 'the computer vs the casino'.Drawing on a 25-year career in the software industry, Dixon lucidly shows how the history of the internet has been defined by three distinct eras that have brought us to the critical moment we're in today. The first was the 'read' era, in which early networks democratized information. The second was the 'read-write' era, in which corporate networks democratized publishing. We are now in the midst of the 'read-write-own' era, sometimes called web3, in which blockchain networks are granting power and economic benefits to communities of users, not just corporations.Read Write Own is a must-read for anyone - internet users, business leaders, creators, entrepreneurs - who wants to understand where we've been and where we're going. It provides a vision for a better internet and a playbook to navigate and build the future.'A must for anyone who wants to better understand the real potential of blockchains and web3 to drive even greater innovation.' Robert Iger, CEO, Disney'Fascinating . . . a refreshing and radical new take at a time when we need fresh thinking more than ever.' Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and author of The Coming Wave 286 pp. Englisch.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The fourth volume of Peter Ackroyd's enthralling History of England, beginning in 1688 with a revolution and ending in 1815 with a famous victory. In Revolution, Peter Ackroyd takes readers from William of Orange's accession following the Glorious Revolution to the Regency, when the flamboyant Prince of Wales ruled in the stead of his mad father, George III, and England was--again--at war with France, a war that would end with the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. Late Stuart and Georgian England marked the creation of the great pillars of the English state. The Bank of England was founded, as was the stock exchange; the Church of England was fully established as the guardian of the spiritual life of the nation, and parliament became the sovereign body of the nation with responsibilities and duties far beyond those of the monarch. It was a revolutionary era in English letters, too, a time in which newspapers first flourished and the English novel was born. It was an era in which coffee houses and playhouses boomed, gin flowed freely, and in which shops, as we know them today, began to proliferate in towns and villages. But it was also a time of extraordinary and unprecedented technological innovation, which saw England utterly and irrevocably transformed from a country of blue skies and farmland to one of soot and steel and coal. Ackroyd is the author of the first, second, and third volumes of his History of England, Foundation, Tudors, and Rebellion. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
