"A comienzos de agosto de 1966, García Márquez acompañó a Mercedes a la oficina de correos para mandar a Buenos Aires el manuscrito terminado de Cien años de soledad. Parecían dos supervivientes de una catástrofe. El paquete contenía cuatrocientas noventa páginas mecanografiadas. Tras el mostrador, el funcionario de la estafeta anunció: "Ochenta y dos pesos". García Márquez observó a Mercedes rebuscar en el monedero. No tenína más que cincuenta pesos, de manera que solo pudieron mandar una mitad del libro: García Márquez hizo que el funcionario fuese quitando hojas, como si se tratara de lonchas de jamón, hasta que los cincuenta pesos bastaron. Volvieron a casa, empeñaron la estufa, el secador y la licuadora. Regresaron a la oficina de correos y enviaron el segundo bloque. Al salir, Mercedes se detuvo y se volvió a su esposo: "Oye, Gabo, Ahora lo único que falta es que esa novela sea mala". 762 páginas, 3 hojas. Encuadernado en cartoné editorial con camisa.
