He was later trapped within Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion, hiding with other Christian foreigners and fearing for his life. Traumatic events in his early life led him to take a new view on his calling, as well as the theological standpoint and the methods of evangelising employed by most European churches at the time. From the earliest, Allen supported the approach of seeding churches which could support themselves, grow on their own and perform their own governance activities. He advocated the incorporation of local customs into the church and a wider variety of types of Christianity as opposed to churches which only mimicked European counterparts. He envisaged better practice involving community leaders in the propagation of Christianity. He was even willing to entertain the idea of deploying lay ministers without formal training across unconverted areas. Arguing from his conviction that the Holy Spirit would guide new churches in their infancy, he accused his contemporaries of patronising condescension. He is best known for his poster, book, and advertising illustrations, the trade character known as The Arrow Collar Man, and his numerous covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker painted more than 400 magazine covers. During The Golden Age of American Illustration , for the Saturday Evening Post alone, J. C. Leyendecker produced 322 covers, as well as many advertisement illustrations for its interior pages. No other artist, until the arrival of Norman Rockwell two decades later, was so solidly identified with one publication. Leyendecker 'virtually invented the whole idea of modern magazine design.' The '70s saw the collapse of the post-war settlement amid apparently insoluble problems over inflation and profitability. Consensus broke down and a lot of things that people remember about the 1970s didn't actually happen. The outcome for poetry was a radical attempt to write down ideas about a different society and personal lifestyle, but also a polarised climate in which one faction tried to erase others from the record. Right-wing historians like to write about the period as an error in which all trajectories led inevitably to the rise of Thatcherism and that rise corrected the error. But it is equally valid to be fascinated by the other social possibilities and to appreciate art for its imaginary paths that were not followed.
