Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This accessible and visually stunning guide puts Tudor and Jacobean portraits into historical context. Many of these important works are in museums and country houses across the UK, and this introductory guide invites the reader to look afresh and to understand why and how they were created. Author Tarnya Cooper discusses key surviving works, including those of Henry VIII, Catherine Parr, Walter Ralegh, Elizabeth I and James I. She explains why portraiture thrived during this period and why, with the declining demand for religious paintings in Northern Europe, emigrant artists such as Hans Holbein the Younger came to England to seek a new market. With lively engaging text and a dynamic design, the guide is organized thematically: the themes include costume and portraiture, pictures with stories to tell, monarchy, family portraits and artists and techniques. A visual timeline is included to show at a glimpse the major developments in portraiture during this period. Tarnya Cooper also includes some surprisingly beautiful technical pictures from her latest research, making her expert knowledge accessible and fascinating. Aimed to have widespread appeal to readers of all ages, Antonia Fraser's foreword shows how portraiture illuminates history and brings it to life. As Britain moved away from being just a small part of Catholic Christendom and established itself as a Protestant country, with the monarch as the head of the Church, the individual became increasingly important. This guide shows not only how people chose to present themselves, but also introduces their fascinating lives and times. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Jacket design by John Gall. keywords: England History Religion Bible Literature. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Next to the Bible itself, the English Bible was - and is - the most influential book ever published. The most famous of all English Bibles, the King James Version, was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators, from John Wycliffe, the fourteenth-century catalyst of English Bible translation, to the committee of scholars who collaborated on the King James translation. Wide as the Waters examines the life and work of Wycliffe and recounts the tribulations of his successors, including William Tyndale, who was martyred, Miles Coverdale, and others who came to bitter ends. It traces the story of the English Bible through the tumultuous reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary Tudor, and Elizabeth I, a time of fierce contest between Catholics and Protestants in England, as the struggle to establish a vernacular Bible was fought among competing factions. In the course of that struggle, Sir Thomas More, later made a Catholic saint, helped orchestrate the assault on the English Bible, only to find his own true faith the plaything of his king.' In 1604, a committee of fifty-four scholars, the flower of Oxford and Cambridge, collaborated on the new translation for King James. Their collective expertise in biblical languages and related fields has probably never been matched, and the translation they produced - substantially based on the earlier work of Wycliffe, Tyndale, and others - would shape English literature and speech for centuries. inventory #28835.

What is their connection to the mysterious Countess Mach-Teldak - and to the events of Tegan's life during her year away from the Doctor? Forever kept busy, Peter Davison's most recently been seen on the London stage in the critically acclaimed The Vertical Hour, and in the musical Gypsy opposite Imelda Staunton. The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan team first met in 1981's Doctor Who adventure Logopolis, where Tegan and Nyssa were on hand to help the Doctor (Tom Baker) regenerate into his fifth incarnation (Peter Davison). Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First U.S. Edition. Returning from the sophisticated court of France to take up her throne in a cold and backward Scotland, eighteen-year-old Mary found herself trapped in a web of ambitions and intrigues--those of her self-righteous brother, James, whose ambition was to rule in her place; of her brilliant secretary of state, Lethington, dedicated to placing the Stewarts on the throne of England; and of Elizabeth I, dazzling and unscrupulous, who feared Mary as a threat not only to her crown but to her life. The intrigues of the men closest to Mary were to be responsible for shaping not only her tragedy but also their own. Yet the secretary stabbed to death at her feet, the murder of her husband, her marriage to his murderer, and even her own end on the headsman's block were not disparate events in an era of easy violence, but episodes in a grand, sometimes terrifying, and ultimately successful design. Reay Tannahill's masterful control of characterization, pace, and plot combine to deliver a tragic romantic saga with all the complexities of a major political thriller. Fine, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. {Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} MLBS1.

Jacket design by Philip Gough. keywords: Shakespeare History England. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The life of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, is a fascinating story. He is known to the world as Shakespeare's patron, but what is less well-known is a leading interest of his later life, the colonisation of Virginia. He freely gave an immense amount of time, money and energy to the expeditions and settlements, becoming Treasurer of the Virginia Company and being commemorated for his efforts in the places still named after him in the New World, in Bermuda and in Virginia itself. Born into a Catholic family at the top of Elizabethan society, succeeding to the peerage as a boy, he grew up into a youth somewhat spoiled by fortune, strikingly handsome, ardent and generous to a fault, intensely loyal in his friendships. He had two great ambitions: to shine as a patron of letters, and to shine in action in the wars. He achieved his desired success as the patron of Shakespeare, but his participation in Essex's conspiracy against Elizabeth I nearly cost him his head and landed him in the Tower for what remained of her reign. This narrow escape brought him to his senses, after his prolonged romantic adolescence. He emerged in the reign of James I as a patriotic, incorruptible statesman, growing into opposition to a corrupt Court and pressing forward colonisation in America and a militant anti-Spanish, pro - Protestant policy in Europe. For this last cause he died, an elderly man, serving in the war in the Netherlands. The scene is the brilliant one of the English Renaissance and its extension to America. There are characters familiar and unfamiliar; politics and literature are mingled; here are the panoply of Court life, the conflict of politics under James I, Southampton as a Parliament man, the heroic struggle to get Virginia started, The Tempest, and the sea. inventory #6354.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 229 pages. Published in 2007. Retrospective collection of "stand-alone" short stories and other pieces. The author's eleventh book. The first appearance of the title as a Vintage Books Classic. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings, of which there are innumerable. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The book design by Chip Kidd is dazzling, one of the best softcover designs ever of our time. The First Softcover Edition is now scarce. Presents James Ellroy's "Hollywood Nocturnes". Seven grisly, riveting accounts in "short dark riffs, the blues formalized". "Our best living mystery writer. Literate, suspenseful, honest. His pages crackle with manic energy. Ellroy captures the vocabulary, the rituals, the smells, rhythms, and colors of real people living on the edge. Nobody since Chandler has evoked so perfectly the seamy side of LA" (The Austin Chronicle). The defining event in James Ellroy's life was his young mother's murder when he was ten years old. Like Elizabeth Short, the "Black Dahlia", she was ritualistically murdered, and Ellroy has basically been writing about his mother's unsolved murder in one way or another since then, including his memoir about her, "My Dark Places" (1996). While his work is influenced by Raymond Chandler - as well as Jim Thompson -, it is tiresome to be reminded of it. It must also be said that his work is ultimately the exact opposite of Chandler's relentless misogyny, a hatred of women that has marred what is otherwise a great body of work. Ellroy loves women, as incarnated by his (in real life, otherwise exasperating) mother, and realized in the female character-victims he has written about with such grace and beauty. He is THE crime writer of Los Angeles of our time: His work isn't just about LA; he encompasses and embodies it; he is LA Incarnate. An absolute "must-have" title for James Ellroy collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed (initialled/"scrawled") in black ink-pen on the title page by James Ellroy. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First "Vintage Books" Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in innumerable subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JAMES ELLROY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0307278794. Signed by Author.

Illustrated with two sections of black-and-white photographic plates. "A revelatory memoir from one of the great political minds of our time. The inside story of the battle for Florida 2000; the aborted White House job switch that inadvertently opened the door to the Iran-Contra scandal; the White House turmoil in the dark days following the Reagan assassination attempt; why Gerald Ford did not ask Ronald Reagan to be his running mate in 1976 - and why Reagan did not pick Ford in 1980; the Bush campaign's desire that Dan Quayle offer to resign from the ticket in 1992; and a great deal more . White House Chief of Staff (twice), Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and campaign chairman or leader for three different candidates in five successive presidential campaigns -- few people have lived and breathed politics as deeply as James Baker, and now, with candor, Texas-style storytelling, and not a few surprises, he takes us into thirty-five years behind the scenes. None of it was planned. The advice of his grandfather, "the Captain," was drilled into him -- "Work hard, study . and keep out of poltics!" -- but then a personal tragedy changed the life of a forty-year-old Texas Democrat lawyer, and he never looked back. From campaign horse-trading, which sometimes go rough ("Politics ain't beanbag," says Baker), to the inner councils of the Reagan and Bush administrations, to the controversies of today, Baker offers frank talk and spellbinding narratives, along with personal appraisals of six presidents and a constellation of others. It was a long, unexpected journey from Houston, Texas, to Washington, D.C> -- and you'll want to travel it with him." -- from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT JAMES A. BAKER, III: James A. Baker, III, served as Chief of Staff to Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush; Under Secretary of Commerce to Gerald Ford; Secretary of the Treasury to Reagan; and Secretary of State to Bush. He also led campaigns for the presidency by all three of these presidents. In addition, he has undertaken special envoy missions for George W. Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on such matters as Iraqi debt relief and the conflict in the Western Sahara. In 2006, he became co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group.

She has had access to never-before-published government documents, including Mafia-related material obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, wiretaps and secret testimony before crime commissions. She has interviewed more than eight hundred people who have been important in Sinatra's life--family members, colleagues, law-enforcement officers, and people never interviewed before about him--men and women who have known Sinatra in and out of the spotlight. Frank Sinatra has dominated the entertainment industry for more than fifty years. The skinny kid crooner who caused the bobby sox craze in 1942 has thickened in the middle and lost his hair, but even now, at age seventy, he continues to excite interest in his music, his life, his women, his money, his politics, and--most of all--his Mafia connections. Now, Kitty Kelley draws an unforgettable, vivid portrait of Sinatra from his earliest years: the childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey, that was far different from the one he invented; the mother he adored but seemed deeply ashamed of; his beginnings as a singer; his relationships with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey; his climb to the top as a singer then movie star, and the violence of the moodswings that followed it, leaving a trail of broken friendships and broken marriages--to Nancy Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Mia Farrow. From the beginning, marriage didn't stop his womanizing. The list and variety of women in his life are formidable. And though he himself was no athlete, he always admired fighters--force of any kind. Sometimes his bodyguards did his beatings for him; sometimes they just held his victims while Sinatra punched. There are many who have taken his insults, threats, and even physical abuse quietly, because they fear his power and wrath. And yet there are many who can testify to his wildly lavish generosity and charitable pursuits. A complex man who plays by his own rules, Frank Sinatra still draws huge audiences wherever he performs. His influence extends even into the White House--today more than ever before. Here, in a biography filled with anecdotes and revealing behind-the-scenes accounts, Kitty Kelley gives us a no-holds-barred inside look at the man, the legend, and the life of Frank Sinatra. Kitty Kelley left her job with the Washington Post in 1971 to pursue free-lance writing. She has written for The New York Times, Newsweek, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, as well as Ladies' Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and other women's magazines. Her previous books, Jackie Oh! and Elizabeth Taylor: The Last Star, were both national bestsellers. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

hardcover. 1st edition. Berkeley. 1993. University of California Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 0520079787. 603 pages. hardcover. Cover photo by Rollie McKenna. Jacket design by Steve Renick. keywords: Poetry Biography Literary Criticism America Literature. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Elizabeth Bishop dedicated her poetry to telling what really happened.' Yet what really happened in the life of one of the twentieth century's finest and most beloved American poets has eluded readers for years. Often characterized as reticent in both her person and her work, Bishop fought hard to conceal the details of her frequently harrowing life. In the first full biography of the poet, Brett Millier pieces together the compelling and painful story of Bishop's life and traces the writing of her brilliantly crafted poems. During her extensive research, Millier consulted all available archival materials as well as additional letters and documents and interviewed many of Bishop's friends, students, and colleagues. She sheds important biographical light on each major poem, weaving the poetry and the life together with such intelligence and tact that both are doubly enriched. By the time Bishop died in 1979, she had won every major literary award, including the Pulitzer Prize. She had maintained close friendships with poets such as her mentor Marianne Moore, Robert Lowell, and James Merrill, but to many she remained a mysterious figure. These pages vividly re-create her complex and tragic life. Traumatic childhood losses, chronic asthma, alcoholism, ambivalence about her passion for women tortured love affairs - these circumstances fed her perennial loneliness and pervaded her poetry. An intrepid traveler forever in search of a home, she came closest to finding one in Brazil, where she spent almost twenty of her most fruitful years. The geography (Nova Scotia, New York, Paris, Key West, Brazil) and history surrounding Bishop's life form a fascinating setting for a story of suffering and resistance - even of triumph - that is deeply appealing. What emerges most clearly in Millier's graceful telling of this story is the warm personal voice of Elizabeth Bishop striving to tell what really happened even as she recoiled from the bald confessional mode of her contemporaries. inventory #7298 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -'There is an honesty and a clarity in Joe Moran's book If You Should Fail that normalises and softens the usual blows of life that enables us to accept and live with them rather than be diminished/wounded by them' Julia Samuel, author of Grief Works and This Too Shall Pass 'Full of wise insight and honesty. Moran manages to be funny, erudite and kindly: a rare - and compelling - combination. This is the essential antidote to a culture obsessed with success. Read it' Madeleine BuntingFailure is the small print in life's terms and conditions.Covering everything from examination dreams to fourth-placed Olympians, If You Should Fail is about how modern life, in a world of self-advertised success, makes us feel like failures, frauds and imposters. Widely acclaimed observer of daily life Joe Moran is here not to tell you that everything will be all right in the end, but to reassure you that failure is an occupational hazard of being human. As Moran shows, even the supremely gifted Leonardo da Vinci could be seen as a failure. Most artists, writers, sports stars and business people face failure. We all will, and can learn how to live with it. To echo Virginia Woolf, beauty 'is only got by the failure to get it . . . by facing what must be humiliation - the things one can't do.'Combining philosophy, psychology, history and literature, Moran's ultimately upbeat reflections on being human, and his critique of how we live now, offers comfort, hope - and solace. For we need to see that not every failure can be made into a success - and that's OK. 176 pp. Englisch.

Hardback. Returning from the sophisticated French court to take up her throne in cold and backward Scotland, 18-year-old Mary finds herself trapped in a web of ambitions and intrigues -- those of her self-righteous brother, James, who desires to rule in her place; of her brilliant Secretary of State, Lethington, dedicated to placing the Stuarts on the throne of England; and of Elizabeth I, dazzling and unscrupulous, who fears Mary as a threat to her crown and to her life. Mingling a poet's passion with an historian's insight, Tannahill chronicles an era of easy violence, desperate actions, and the grand -- often terrifying -- designs of those who would dominate it. 4.8 Centimeters X 16.8 Centimeters X 24 Centimeters.
