Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner first crossed paths as actors on the set of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Little did they know that their next roles as Sp ock and Captain Kirk, in a new science fiction television series, would sha pe their lives in ways no one could have anticipated. In seventy-nine telev ision episodes of Star Trek and six feature films, they grew to know each o ther more than most friends could ever imagine. Over the course of half a century, Shatner and Nimoy saw each other through personal and professional highs and lows. In this powerfully emotional boo k, Shatner tells the story of a man who was his friend for five decades, re counting anecdotes and untold stories of their lives on and off set, as wel l as gathering stories from others who knew Nimoy well, to present a full p icture of a rich life. As much a biography of Nimoy as a story of their friendship, Leonard is a uniquely heartfelt book written by one legendary actor in celebration of another.

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 270 pages; Description: vii, 270 p. : col. ill. ; 24 cm. Subjects: Howkins, Heidi --Women mountaineers --United States --Mountaineers --Biography --Mountaineering --Himalaya Mountains. Summary: Among the mountaineering elite, K2 is the ultimate challenge. Everest is higher -- by just 785 feet -- but K2 is steeper, tougher, and deadlier: Everest has been summitted more than 1, 300 times, while only 183 men and 5 women have reached K2's fearsome peak since it was first conquered in 1954, and of those, at least 21 never made it back down. On her first effort in 1998, Howkins became one of the handful of women to attempt the peak. On her second attempt in 2000, she was determined to once again climb this daunting peak alpine-style -- without the aid of porters or supplemental oxygen -- a feat accomplished by very few mountaineers. She knew the risks as well as anyone.but even her long experience could not prepare her for what happened high on K2's deadly slopes. Highlighted by evocative photographs, K2 is a compelling chronicle of high-mountain adventure and personal achievement. It's also an unusually articulate meditation upon risk, reward, and responsibility -- made all the more poignant and immediate by the fact that only a few years ago, Alison Hargreaves's death on K2's flanks provoked a storm of controversy about the morality of trying to combine motherhood and a world-class mountaineering career. "I have to be ready for whatever challenge I may face, " writes Howkins, a single mother, as she explores the ethics of her passion. "My daughter gives me a desperate kind of strength". 1 Kg.

Paperback. Condition: Good. 319 pages. Cover wornAt twenty-one, Jinny Brownlow's life is not going as well as she had hoped. She's working at a dead-end t yping job at an engineering firm and has just been dumped by her fiancè for her own roommate. Outside of work her only hobby is he r local theater group, but even there she's just a general helper and not credited with having any talent at all. Something needs to change in Jinny's life, and it may have to be Jinny herself. A bloody cultured handmaiden.Yes, that's a good description of y ou. So agreeable, so polite, so damned eager to please. These are Ray's words to Jinny the night he confesses he's gotten her room mate, Emily, pregnant. Ray had apparently found Emily a more will ing bedmate, and he reminds Jinny that things might have worked o ut had she been more cooperative. Thinking this over after Ray's departure, Jinny recalls the past year with a sigh. Her experienc es with men have been disasters. Jinny's lonely life -- working t he day away at her desk and sitting alone in her tiny apartment a t night practicing French and listening to her radio -- seems des tined to continue indefinitely, until one day the owner of the fi rm, Mr. Henderson, calls her into his office. Known to be a devil of a man who works longer and harder than everyone else, Bob Hen derson seems an unlikely candidate to change Jinny's life. When s he's called to do typing for him she's terrified but refuses to c ower like the other secretaries and ends up earning his respect a nd affection. On the same day, Hal Campbell, leading man in her t heater group, goes out of his way to take a special interest in J inny and her personal problems, and she realizes she may not have to be as lonely as she thought. Each of these two men will be an important part of Jinny's changing life, inspiring her to become less of a cultured handmaiden and think more about what she want s, but she's holding out for the perfect man -- one who will trea t her like a princess while respecting her beliefs about marriage and her hesitancy to give herself to any man outside those sacre d bonds. After a twisting, unpredictable search, in the end Jinny discovers that there just might be someone for everyone after al l. The Cultured Handmaiden displays the beloved Catherine Cookson 's powers at their fullest and her enduring themes of hardship, l ove, virtue, and hope. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly It's the 1970s, and 21-year-old Jinny Brownlow has just heard he r fiancé pronounce her a cultured handmaiden --slavishly eager to please--and announce he's leaving her for her roommate. What wil l obedient Brit Jinny do, in these years of women's liberation? S tand up for herself as best she can. She puts her new MO in motio n as secretary to Bob Henderson, her gruff, demanding boss as the two engage in friendly banter (You are a cheeky bugger, he tells her), and Henderson's wife and six children soon become like a s econd family. Meanwhile, Jinny finds herself attracted to kindhea rted Hal Campbell, though the twice-divorced actor doesn't appear to have marriage on his mind. Jinny's life is turned upside down again when her boss and his eldest son, Glen, are in an accident that kills both of their spouses. While ministering to the wheel chair-bound senior Henderson, Jinny finds herself drawn to his on ce wayward son, John. Is he the man of her dreams--or just anothe r cad? In a genre known for predictable plots and even more predi ctable characters, bestseller Cookson (d. 1998) renders a sharply drawn heroine with scruples and sass in this engaging tale origi nally published in the U.K. in 1988. Occasionally overwrought pro se does little to distract from the story of a woman hoping for r omance and respect. (Jan.) Copyright ® Reed Business Information , a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Deaver; Author Dedication; Foreword by Nancy Reagan; Introduction; and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with a black-and-white photograph and Ronald Reagan's letter to Mike Deaver dated May 10, 1985. "Unless you follow politics closely, you probably don't know too much about Michael Deaver or how important he was to Ronnie as governor of California, president of the United States, and as a friend. I think every president can point to one particular aide who knows him so well that he becomes indispensable. Mike was that man for Ronald Reagan, and there are few people better suited to write about him. He is the only one who was there from 1967 to 1987 with only the briefest of breaks, at Ronnie's side for all the good times, and of course, many of the tough times, too . For more than twenty years, Mike spent more time with Ronnie than anybody outside his family. Often it was only Mike at Rinnie's side in the Oval Office, on the campaign planes, and in motorcades. It is many of these memories that he shares in A Different Drummer." -- from the Foreword by Mrs. Nancy Reagan, and the rear outer jacket. " "I had come to adore and respect the president like a second father. Reagan was once asked if he thought of me as another son. He thought a minute and said, 'Son, no. Brother, maybe.' " A warm, personal portrait of ROnald Reagan, A Different Drummer brims with recollections from a relationship that has spanned more than three decades. FOrmer aide and longtime family friend, Michael Deaver first met ROnald Reagan during his 1966 campaign for governor of California and later served him in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., as the president's deputy chief of staff. Whether it was traveling with Reagan on endless campaign flights, discussing the day-to-day issues in the Oval Office, or surviving the harrowing assassination attempt, Deaver worked with the former chief executive for twenty consecutive years. Now he offers his memories of ROnald Reagan as governor, president, and friend. In 1964, after Barry GOldwater's unsuccessful bid for the presidency, the Republican Party found itself in disarray, and Michael Deaver, a young party operative, a "red meat conservative," was looking for a new party leader he could believe in. He threw his hat in with a former actorr and General Electric spokesperson, a man who would later prove himself capable of joining the disparate elements of the Party and securing the nomination. In what would be the first of many underestimations, the Democrat Party eagerly takes on Reagan. He would not only go on to win the governorship of California, but he would serve two terms. In 1976 he was unable to unseat President Gerald Ford for the presidential nomination but, undeterred, he returned in 1980 and won a landslide victory, leading America to remarkable heights of prosperity and confidence. Yet as one of the most successful and popular presidents in American history, Reagan remains a mystery even to biographers with total access. In A Different Drummer, Deaver writes of the Reagan he has known: a man who was shy and deplored talking about himself, who would rather spend a party talking to a laborer than policy wonks; a man whose convictions remained unchanged over the course of his life, who never used pollsters to decide his position on issues; a man whose idea of relaxation was riding a horse, fixing fence posts, and chopping wood until his muscles ached and his hands blistered. Reagan emerges in this impressionistic portrait as charismatic and unwaveringly optimistic, a devoted husband and dedicated leader, disciplined and tough. " -- excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Thirty years after Robin Morgan's groundbreaking anthology, Sisterhood Is Powerful -- named by The American Librarians' Association one of "The 100 Most Influential Books of the Twentieth Century" -- comes this landmark new collection for the twenty-first century. Sisterhood Is Forever -- with over 60 original essays Morgan commissioned from well-known feminist leaders plus energetic Gen X and Y activists -- is a composite mural of the female experience in America: where we've been, where we are, where we're going. The stunning scope of topics ranges from reproductive, health, and environmental issues to workplace inequities and the economics of women's unpaid labor; from globalization to the politics of aging; from cyberspace, violence against women, and electoral politics to spirituality, the law, the media, and academia. The deliberately audacious mix of contributors spans different generations, races, ethnicities, and sexual preferences: CEOs, housewives, rock stars, farmers, scientists, prostituted women, politicians, women in prison, firefighters, disability activists, artists, flight attendants, an army general, an astronaut, an anchorwoman, even a pair of teens who edit a girls' magazine. Each article celebrates the writer's personal voice -- her humor, passion, anger, and the integrity of her perspective -- while offering the latest data on women's status, political analysis, new "how-to" tools for activism, and visionary yet practical strategies for the future -- strategies needed now more than ever. Robin Morgan's own contributions are everything her readers expect: prophetic, powerfully argued, unsentimentally lyrical. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Massively heavy, oversized volume bound in a big, tall, heavy, thick quarto format. A stellar group of scholars have put together an impressive, depressing, arresting survey of the horrors of anti-Semitism and of the Holocaust. Inscribed to Marilyn Harran, maybe by the publisher? Contributions by Marilyn Harran, Dieter Kuntz, Russel Lemmons, Robert Ashley Michael, Keith Pickus, and John K. Roth. 765 pp. Stated First Edition, First Printing, and with extensive photographs and maps in both color and black and white. From the publisher's blurb, "The Holocaust Chronicle, written and fact-checked by top scholars, recounts the long, complex, anguishing story of the most terrible crime of the 20th century. A massive, oversized hardcover of more than 750 pages, The Holocaust Chronicle: A History in Words and Pictures is an excitingly unique, not-for-profit endeavor that is a personal project of the publisher, Louis Weber, C. E. O. Of Chicago-based Publications International, Ltd. 'As a book publisher, I am in a unique position to create this ambitious project,' Weber says. The son of Polish Jews who settled in America in the 1920s, Weber conceived The Holocaust Chronicle in order to give something back to the Jewish community, and to bring the truth of the Holocaust to as many people as possible. The mission of The Holocaust Chronicle is to report the facts, clearly and free of bias or agenda. Featured are more than 2000 photographs selected after intensive research in the collections of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D. C. And Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, as well as other archives and private collections located around the world. Many of these images are in full color and most are published in book form for the first time. The photographs chronicle the Holocaust in starkly visual terms, capturing victims and perpetrators alike, as well as Allied leaders and the multitude of peripheral figures. Caption-text is detailed, and rich with facts and human interest. The books 3000-item timeline of Holocaust-related events is unprecedented in its scope and ambition. Spanning the years 1000 B. C. To 1999 A. D., the timeline pinpoints deportations, atrocities, and important developments in the Nazis Final Solution, as well as individual acts of cruelty, compassion, and heroic Jewish resistance. Illustrated chapter-opener essays place the most important years of the Holocaust and its immediate aftermath, 1933-1946, into sharp perspective. Nearly 300 sidebars detail significant people, places, issues, and events. More than 30 full-color, specially commissioned maps show the reader where events took place. The sentiments and hatreds that gave rise to the Holocaust were not confined to the 12 years of Adolf Hitlers Thousand-Year Reich. The books illustrated prologue surveys the antisemitism that was expressed over many centuries in Europe as bloody pogroms, exclusionary laws, and other persecution. The illustrated epilogue documents the long, painful healing process that has lasted for generations and may never be completed."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Letter. Condition: Very Good. Autograph; Manuscript note Signed by "David" [William David Ormsby-Gore, 5th Baron Harlech and British Ambassador to the U.S.A. during the Kennedy Administration] to Rowland Evans on personal printed letterhead. Letterhead reads "Wood Hill / Oswestry, / Shropshire, / Oswestry 3134". Text of note (1 leaf written on both sides) "Dear Rowly, / You and K were such / wonderful friends to us when / we were in Washington that / I was particularly touched by / your most moving letter about / Sissie. // I have such very / happy memories of when we / were all together and I / shall be everlastingly grateful / to you both for them. / I hope I may see / you when I come over in / October. / Meanwhile I thank / you with all my heart for / your letter. With my love to / K. // Yours ever / David" [1967] Note measures 5.25" X 7" William David Ormsby-Gore, 5th Baron Harlech KCMG PC DL (1918 1985), known as David Ormsby-Gore until June 1961 and as Sir David Ormsby-Gore from then until February 1964, was a British diplomat and Conservative politician. Ormsby-Gore knew Kennedy well from his time in London, where his father Joseph P. Kennedy had served as American Ambassador. Like Macmillan, Ormsby-Gore was distantly related to Kennedy, but had a closer relationship than did Macmillan with the President-elect and his brother Robert. Six months after Kennedy took office Ormsby-Gore was in Washington, D.C. Referred to under the Kennedy administration as "our kind of Ambassador", he supplied Kennedy with a stream of advice and Cuban cigars via his diplomatic bag. He was almost a resident at the White House, being more a friend of the family than a mere ambassador. His wife Sylvia "Sissie" Lloyd Thomas died in 1967 in a car crash. After President Kennedy's assassination, Ormsby-Gore spent some time with Jacqueline Kennedy, even vacationing with her in Cambodia. In 1968 he proposed marriage to her, but, she did not accept. The Evans, to whom this note was written, were very much at the heart of "The Georgetown Set" during the Kennedy Administration. PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Evans earned a place on Richard Nixon's infamous "Enemies List." Novak reported that Evans had JFK as a guest for the first dinner party the latter attended as President Elect. Kay and Rowland Evans has a particularly close friendship with Robert F. Kennedy, his wife Ethel and their family.; Signed by Author.

'A well-edited selection of Demosthes' private speeches is to be welcomed. (.) In keeping with modern trends the editors concentrate on the subject-k=matter of the speeches rather than on the language or the artistic qualities. There is an excellent introduction which, apart from giving a short account of Demosthenes as a writer of private speeches, describes the Athenian legal system as contrastec with our own, the part played by the speech-writer, and his relationship to his client. (.) there is no critical apparatus, but the more important points are discussed in the commentary. (.) A preface to the commentary on each speech gives the general and legal background to the case. Stress is laid throughout on assessing the speaker's motives, the validity of his arguments, and their likely effect on the jurors. (.) This is a scholarly work edited with good sense and discrimination. It should be of value to a wide range of readers.' (H.LL. HUDSON-WILLIAMS in The Classical Review (New Series), 1986, p.313). Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Hardcover volume containing G.K. Chesterton's great companion apologies Heretics & Orthodoxy.Gilbert Keith Chesterton has become synonymous with modern Christian apologetics. But his impact goes beyond just those interested in a defense of Christian thought. His writings have influenced such diverse authors as C.S. Lewis, Marshall McLuhan, and Jorge Luis Borges, and remains a subtle and unseen presence in contemporary Catholic thought. At his funeral, Ronald Knox said 'All of this generation has grown up under Chesterton's influence so completely that we do not even know when we are thinking Chesterton.' Before his conversion from atheism to knowing God, C.S. Lewis, the author of Mere Christianity & The Great Divorce, said 'in reading Chesterton, as in reading MacDonald, I did not know what I was letting myself in for. A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere -' Chesterton wrote in a time when materialism and new forms of political theory were soon to cause havoc in the western world. His was a voice calling for restraint - pointing back to the fundamentals of Christian doctrine, the purpose and value of which was being lost in the noise and commotion of the post industrial age. Describing the rush towards less familiar and attractive ideologies, Chesterton wrote: 'In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, 'I don't see the use of this; let us clear it away.' To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: 'If you don't see the use of it, I certainly won't let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.'' Chesterton was a man who continually showed us the use of orthodoxy in Christianity - most of all in his great companion apologies: Heretics & Orthodoxy. In Heretics, he first points to the flaws in the beliefs of the moderns. In Orthodoxy, he defends the values handed down through millennium of Christian dogma. Chesterton was a great debater, often trading blows with modern thinkers such as George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Bertrand Russell and Clarence Darrow. He became known as the 'prince of paradox,' He was also a prolific writer, producing biographies on St. Augustine and St. Francis, and touched on many of the varieties of religion in his writings. He wrote fiction as well, authoring the famous Father Brown books and the Man Who Was Thursday. Chesterton was certainly not the imitation of Christ in his personal life. A large man fond of food and drink, he was almost childlike in wonder of the magic of the world, while expressing the wit of an ancient. He gave no secret doctrine or systematic theology, but his 'goodness' and basic 'common sense' led many to the Church. One commenter stated: first you read C.S. Lewis, then Chesterton, then you become Catholic. Despite his less than temperate life, he is now under investigation by the Church for Beatification: such was his impact.

Signed and inscribed by the author with thin black Sharpie at the upper section of the full title page. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Curious about ancient stories, once a part of our culture, that schools fail to teach today Our Supreme Court gave guidelines so classes could read them, so why don't they Are schools fearful that teachers will present the stories for religious purposes Shouldn't students know of Eve and her fatal choice of pride's poison, a poison that took her life, sent one son to the grave, and condemned her firstborn to wander the earth Shouldn't they know of Lamech, drunk on that same poison, singing self-exalting songs of brutality and leading the world into a violence that could be cleansed only by raging ¿oods Also, for their great comfort, shouldn't students know of Jacob's sons, so much like Cain yet united by a brother who laid aside pride's call for revenge--even pride's call for personal justice This book leads public school students through the first part of the world's hidden-away bestseller, marking out a path through the legal thickets and pits of the Bible into the hearts of the ancients--people who had the same joys, sorrows, failures, and hopes that all of us have, even today.A Student's Notes on Genesis is for curious-minded students and for public school teachers who know that education should include the world's bestseller.''Having heard for several years that A Student's Notes on Genesis was being written, I greatly anticipated its completion. I can now say after my first reading that it has exceeded my expectations. Eleanor Rupp has accomplished what so many have never dared to try.''Barbara K. Bellefeuille, Vice President for Academic Services, Bethel College''This is must-have book for public school administrators, teachers, board members, or parents who believe that the Bible has a legitimate place in the public schools and can be taught without violating the US Constitution. The author should know, since she taught the Bible for more than forty years.''Timothy C. Evearitt, Professor of Education (retired), Covenant College''Eleanor Rupp began teaching Bible at Bluefield High School in the 1960s. She was an educator and developed a course that was not only meaningful to students but also complied with US Supreme Court guidelines for teaching Bible in public schools. A Student's Notes on Genesis captures a part of the rich legacy she left at BHS, yet it challenges the reader to take up and continue her work.''Bob Harrison, Retired West Virginia EducatorEleanor Grace Rupp taught the Bible in the public schools for forty-five years, continually seeking to understand the Supreme Court guidelines for how this ancient, world-famous book may be legally taught in the public schools. She has degrees from Southern Connecticut State University, Columbia International University, and Reformed Theological Seminary, as well as an honorary doctorate of letters from King University.

  • Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The three great apologies of G.K. Chesterton in one volume: Heretics, Orthodoxy & The Everlasting Man. Gilbert Keith Chesterton has become synonymous with modern Christian apologetics. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.'' Chesterton was a man who continually showed us the use of orthodoxy in Christianity - most of all in his three great apologies: Heretics, Orthodoxy & The Everlasting Man. In Heretics, he first points to the flaws in the beliefs of the moderns. In Orthodoxy, he defends the values handed down through millennium of Christian dogma. In The Everlasting Man, he tells the grand story of Christianity itself and the often ignored miracle of its appearance in the life of man.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is a contribution to the history of the Cold War, Dr. Birnbaum having been a very audible critic of US policy. Even more, it is a study of the role of ideas in politics, and of the adventures and misadventures of three generations of public intellectuals in Europe and the US. The author, now the senior member of the Editorial Board of The Nation, was a founding editor of New Left Review, a member of the Editorial Board of Partisan Review, and a contributor to Trans-Atlantic debate. He is particularly proud of having been barred from the German Democratic Republic in 1986 for assisting some of the dissidents who eventually ended the regime. Dr. Birnbaum's direct experience of public affairs includes an appointment as Consultant, National Security Council, and advisory roles with the United Auto Workers and Senator Edward Kennedy. He has also been an advisor to the German Trade Union Federation and the Green and Social Democratic Parties, to the French Socialist Party and Spanish Socialist Party, and to the Secretariat for Non-Believers of the Holy See. The text includes portraits of Harvard contemporaries (McGeorge Bundy, Carl Kaysen, Henry Kissinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.) as well as of a spectrum of Europeans, including Willy Brandt. Isaiah Berlin, Clement Greenberg, Leszek Kolakowski, Henri Lefebvre, Dwight Macdonald, Herbert Marcuse, Iris Murdoch, William Phillips are equally remembered.'With his unique mixture of acute analysis, sardonic humor and human judgments, the author enabled me to re-imagine the tumultuous years of our recent past. His picture of Germany and his personal account of New York intellectual life are especially intriguing. This is a good volume to peruse in our present period of political ineptitude and tone-deafness.' -Harvey Cox, Hollis Professor of Divinity Emeritus, Harvard University, author, The Future of Faith and The Market as God, Harvard University Press, 2016. 'An astonishing memoir. Here is the political and intellectual life of American and Europe over more than sixty years, a kaleidoscope of connections, comrades and correspondence, all linked by the Ariadne's thread of Norman's life.' -James K. Galbraith, Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations and Professor of Government, LBJ School of Public Affairs, The University of Texas at Austin. 'This memoir is a testament to American exceptionalism. There has been no public American intellectual like Norman Birnbaum, no one who has taught, done research, and entered public struggles in every major European country while also connecting with oppositional groups in New York and Washington D.C. Nor has anyone else, with wit and interpretive focus, connected such a panoply of experience with the major currents of the last half of the Twentieth Century.' -Robert Jay Lifton, psychiatrist and author, winner of the National Book Award for Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima and The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide (Basic Books 2000). 'Without peer, Norman Birnbaum has educated generations of Americans about the politics of Europe, just as he has illuminated scholars, political thinkers and statesmen of Europe about the United States and world politics in general.' -Marcus Raskin, Distinguished Fellow and co-founder, Institute for Policy Studies. 'At ninety-one, the author is true to himself: a thinker at home on both sides of the Atlantic. He provides us with unique and vivid sketches of the movements and persons he has influenced. His vocation as a teacher who takes the world as a classroom is a gift across the generations: he influences us still.' -Gerhard Schröder, Former Chancellor, the Federal German Republic.

25 cm. xxvii, 754 pages : illustrations. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective collector's mylar. Excellent, as new condition with only minor signs of external wear. Timothy Michael Healy was one of the most brilliant and controversial politicians of the Irish Parliamentary Party era. A politician of savage fluency, he more than any other shaped the idiom of modern Irish nationalism. The great drama of his life was his role in the rise and fall of Parnell, as the most skilled propagandist of Parnellism, and ultimately as his former mentor's most savage assailant. This is the first study to re-assess the career of one of the most controversial and neglected figures in Irish history. Timothy Michael Healy, KC (17 May 1855 26 March 1931) was an Irish nationalist politician, journalist, author, barrister and one of the most controversial Irish Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. His political career began in the 1880s under Charles Stewart Parnell's leadership of the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), and continued into the 1920s, when he was the first Governor-General of the Irish Free State. He was born in Bantry, County Cork, the second son of Maurice Healy, clerk of the Bantry Poor Law Union, and Eliza Healy (née Sullivan). His elder brother Thomas Healy (1854 1924) was a solicitor and Member of Parliament (MP) for North Wexford and his younger brother Maurice Healy (1859 1923), with whom he held a lifelong close relationship, was a solicitor and MP for Cork City. His father was descended from a family line which in holding to their Catholic faith, lost their lands, which he compensated by being a scholarly gentleman. His father was transferred in 1862 to a similar position in Lismore, County Waterford, holding the post until his death in 1906. Timothy was educated at the Christian Brothers school in Fermoy, and was otherwise largely self-educated, in 1869 at the age of fourteen going to live with his uncle Timothy Daniel Sullivan MP in Dublin. He then moved to England finding employment in 1871 with the North Eastern Railway Company in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. There he became deeply involved in the Irish Home Rule politics of the local Irish community. After leaving for London in 1878 Healy worked as a confidential clerk in a factory owned by his relative, then worked as a parliamentary correspondent for The Nation newspaper owned by his uncle, writing numerous articles in support of Parnell, the newly emergent and more militant home rule leader, and his policy of parliamentary obstructionism. Parnell admired Healy's intelligence and energy after Healy had established himself as part of Parnell's broader political circle. He became Parnell's secretary but was denied contact to Parnell's small inner circle of political colleagues. Parnell, however, brought Healy into the Irish Party (IPP) and supported him as a nationalist candidate when elected MP for Wexford Borough in 1880 83 against the aspiring John Redmond whose father, William Archer Redmond, was its recently deceased MP. Healy was returned unopposed to parliament, aided by the fact that Redmond stood aside and that he had survived an agrarian court case which alleging intimidation. In parliament, Healy did not physically cut an imposing figure but impressed by the application of sheer intelligence, diligence and volatile use of speech when he achieved the Healy Clause in the Land Law (Ireland) Act 1881 which provided that no further rent should in future be charged on tenant's improvements. By the mid-1880s Healy had already acquired a reputation for a scurrilousness of tone. He married his cousin Eliza Sullivan in 1882, they had three daughters and three sons and he enjoyed a happy and intense family life, closely interlinked both by friendship and intermarriage with the Sullivans of west Cork. Through his reputation as a friend of the farmers, after having been imprisoned for four months following an agrarian case, and backed by Parnell, he was elected in a Monaghan by-election in June 1883 5, deemed to be the climax in the Healy-Parnell relationship. In 1884 he was called to the Irish bar as a barrister (in 1889 to the inner bar as K.C., in London in 1910). His reputation allowed him to build an extensive legal practice, particularly in land cases. Parnell chose him unwisely for South Londonderry in 1885, which Ulster seat he only held for a year. He was then elected in 1886 92 for North Longford. Prompted by the depression in the prices of dairy products and cattle in the mid-1880 as well as bad weather for a number of years, many tenant farmers unable to pay their rents were left under the threat of eviction. Healy devised a strategy to secure a reduction in rent from the landlords which became known as the Plan of Campaign, organised in 1886 amongst others by Timothy Harrington. In his novel The Man Who Was Thursday G.K. Chesterton describes one of his characters as a ". little man, with a black beard and glasses a man somewhat of the type of Mr Tim Healy .". Condition: Good+. This is an early diary, thin leather covers, measuring approx. (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"). It is written in very easy to read period brown ink. There are a total of (66) pages filled out. The diary was kept by a U.S. sailor, who made entries from his departure date in San Fransisco on July 1, 1907 to Nov. 10, 1907 when he arrived in Hong Kong. The first page reads "DIARY OF MY TOUR AROUND THE WORLD". The sailor first writes "JULY 1, 1907 - SIGNED ON U.S. ARMY TRANSPORT SHERMAN AS AN OILER". The following pages are headed "AT SEA - HONOLULU - MIDWAY ISLAND - GUAM - MANILA - CAVITTE - HONG KONG". His voyage continues, ending in Hong Kong. His descriptions of the voyage, other sailors, experiences, native people, sights, points of interest, etc. are very interersting and quite descriptive. Much of the diary is concerned with his time in Manila. Once there, he takes a job as a stock clerk with Castle Bros. He then goes to work for the government and describes bossing approx. 200 men. After working in Manila for a month or two, he then sails to Hong Kong. During his trip, he describes: EVERYBODY BEING EXTREMELY HOT, HOMESICK AND SEASICK - DESCRIBES RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL IN MANILA - HAVING A JAPANESE MASSAGE THAT HE WILL NEVER FORGET - GETTING A TATTOO - STAYING ON A STEAMER AND BOSSING (200) MEN REPAIRING BARGES - SNEAKING INTO AN INVITATION ONLY HIGH LEVEL MEETING WITH WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT SETTING UP THE PARLIAMENT OF MANILA AFTER THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR (HE DESCRIBES THE SPEECH AND DECORATIONS) - TELLS OF ENTERING AN ATHLETIC RACE DURING A LARGE CELEBRATION FOR TAFT - FAKING A FEVER TO BE ABLE TO STAY IN SICK BAY, ONLY TO BE FOUND OUT BY THE DOCTOR AND BEING KICKED OUT OF THE INFIRMARY PERMENANTLY - DESCRIBES GUAM - DESCRIBES MANILA HARBOR, PEOPLE, SIGHTS - MUCH MORE ABOUT MANILA: PARTYING, DANCING, ENGLISH, CHINESE, AMERICAN RESIDENTS, SIGHTSEEING - DETAILED AND GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF A COCK FIGHT - MEETS MANY 1898 AND 1899 SPANISH AMERICAN WAR VETERANS LIVING IN MANILA AFTER THE WAR - DESCRIBES HONG KONG AND IT'S PEOPLE - etc. There are too many stories, descriptions and anecdotes to list! He peppers some of his descriptions with racial slurs (n----r, c---k). Some of his exact entries include "TROOPS HAVE ARRIVED, 30TH INFANTRY, MUCH EXCITEMENT AND CONFUSION (description of leaving on his voyage) - BIG CROWD, FAREWELL, BAND PLAYING, LARGE CROWD - PARTNER OILER SMASHED TWO FINGERS - PHILIPPINO STUDENTS, AMERICAN EDUCATED, ON BOARD FOR MANILA - (HONOLULU) KANKA BOYS SWAM TO MEET US, DIVING FOR COINS - ROYAL HAWAIIAN BAND PLAYING, FAREWELL, MANY SOLDIERS WEEPING - MIDWAY ISLAND, LONG NARROW, SANDY REEF WITH NO POINT HIGHER THAN 10 FEET ABOVE THE OCEAN, ONLY GOVT. A prominent figure of seventeenth-century Florence, Carlo Roberto Dati was well educated in the humanities and sciences, and belonged to the circle of Galileo s disciples, together with Francesco Redi and Evangelista Torricelli. In 1648, he obtained the chair of classical languages at the Florentine university. He was, furthermore, a member of the Academy of Crusca, the first language academy in the world, founded in 1582, for which he served as a secretary and actively collaborated in drafting the third edition of the Vocabolario, which would finally appear in 1691. Dati s academic name or nome di Crusca was Smarrito , and both the woodcut device of the Academy and Dati s personal Crusca pala, or baker s peel, with the motto che mi mostra la via (i.e., it shows me the way ) are used as tailpieces in his Vite de pittori antichi. The Vite de pittori antichi is the most enduring of the numerous literary and scientific texts published by Dati in his lifetime. It contains the biographies of four celebrated Greek painters of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, Zeuxis of Heraclea, Parrhasius of Ephesus, Apelles of Colophon, and Protogenes of Caria. The original plan was, however, still more ambitious: the intention had in fact been to publish an extensive history of ancient painting, as his correspondence and papers preserved at the National Library of Florence demonstrate. Of this grand project, only the present volume came to light, dedicated by Dati to no less than Louis XIV, King of France, who had granted him a yearly benefit in 1666 on account of his merits in the Republic of Letters. Dati relied on ancient sources for information on the life and works of each painter, and he also consulted a great number of manuscripts made accessible thanks to his vast and numerous intellectual relationships. Material was provided, for example, by one of his closest friends and correspondents, the famous Galileian Cassiano Dal Pozzo. Meanwhile, the renowned artist Salvator Rosa supplied detailed explanations on painting techniques. Each narrative section pertaining to a given artist s life is followed by Dati s learned commentaries on specific textual, artistic, or antiquarian issues. The Vite de pittori antichi enjoyed wide success, and continues to stand for the fruitful link between erudition and science, one of the most interesting features of seventeenth-century Italy.
