Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A provocative exposé of organized crime and its unholy alliance with world leaders, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement, Double Deal is a forty-year saga told with unflinching honesty by mob insider and former chief of police Michael Corbitt. Growing up poor and angry, Michael Corbitt fought his way up the ranks of greasers and street gangs until he attracted the attention of Chicago crime boss Sam Giancana, who placed him on the Willow Springs, Illinois, police force. By the time he was appointed chief of police, he'd also moved up the Outfit's ranks and was living the high life of a respected mobster. Corbitt's luck turned when he was indicted on charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder. Although there was a mob contract on his life and he was facing a twenty-year sentence, he refused to testify against organized crime figures under the witness protection program, maintaining instead the mafioso's code of silence -- omertà -- until his release from prison. Now Corbitt breaks that silence, holding back nothing -- including the account of his personal involvement in the brutal murder of the wife of Chicago mob attorney Alan Masters. Making no excuses for his dual existence, Corbitt bares his soul, confessing in graphic -- sometimes horrific -- detail a life lived as both saint and sinner, a life that moved back and forth between the conflicting worlds of the police officer and the gangster with schizophrenic ease. Delving deep into the shadowy underworld, Corbitt divulges -- for the first time ever -- the explosive story of organized crime's "mystery man," the brilliant Chicago mobster who has been the real power behind the Outfit's throne for almost thirty years. Corbitt paints a frightening picture of a man he knew all too well, a man who would do anything to control the Outfit's international gambling and money-laundering empire worth billions. Corbitt's stunning revelations have been corroborated by FBI agents and court and government documents. From the murder of Chicago boss Sam Giancana to the myth of a "clean" Las Vegas, he tells it like it was -- and still is. From Noriega to the Shah of Iran, Israel and its deadly Mossad, drug running, arms deals, money laundering, murder, and intrigue, it's all here in Double Deal, making this as much the story of one man's amazing double life as it is of the mob's terrifying reach into our world today. Hardcover. viii, 548 p. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. From Wikipedia: "Edward R. Murrow KBE (born Egbert Roscoe Murrow; April 25, 1908 April 27, 1965) was an American broadcast journalist. He first came to prominence with a series of radio news broadcasts during World War II, which were followed by millions of listeners in the United States. Fellow journalists Eric Sevareid, Ed Bliss, Bill Downs, Dan Rather, and Alexander Kendrick considered Murrow one of journalism's greatest figures, noting his honesty and integrity in delivering the news. A pioneer of television news broadcasting, Murrow produced a series of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator Joseph McCarthy. On March 9, 1954, Murrow, Friendly, and their news team produced a half-hour See It Now special entitled "A Report on Senator Joseph McCarthy". Murrow used excerpts from McCarthy's own speeches and proclamations to criticize the senator and point out episodes where he had contradicted himself. Murrow and Friendly paid for their own newspaper advertisement for the program; they were not allowed to use CBS's money for the publicity campaign or even use the CBS logo. Nevertheless, the broadcast contributed to a nationwide backlash against McCarthy and is seen as a turning point in the history of television. It provoked tens of thousands of letters, telegrams, and phone calls to CBS headquarters, running 15 to 1 in favor. In a retrospective produced for Biography, Friendly noted how truck drivers pulled up to Murrow on the street in subsequent days and shouted "Good show, Ed. Good show, Ed." Murrow offered McCarthy a chance to appear on See It Now to respond to the criticism. McCarthy accepted the invitation and made his appearance three weeks later, but his rebuttal served only to further decrease his already fading popularity. In the program following McCarthy's appearance, Murrow commented that the senator had "made no reference to any statements of fact that we made" and contested the personal attacks made by "the junior senator from Wisconsin" against himself. Murrow's hard-hitting approach to the news, however, cost him influence in the world of television. See It Now occasionally scored high ratings (usually when it was tackling a particularly controversial subject), but in general it did not score well on prime-time television. When a quiz show phenomenon began and took TV by storm in the mid-1950s, Murrow realized the days of See It Now as a weekly show were numbered. (Biographer Joseph Persico notes that Murrow, watching an early episode of The $64, 000 Question air just before his own See It Now, is said to have turned to Friendly and asked how long they expected to keep their time slot). See It Now was knocked out of its weekly slot in 1955 after sponsor Alcoa withdrew its advertising, but the show remained as a series of occasional TV special news reports that defined television documentary news coverage. Despite the show's prestige, CBS had difficulty finding a regular sponsor, since it aired intermittently in its new time slot (Sunday afternoons at 5 p.m. ET by the end of 1956) and could not develop a regular audience. In 1956, Murrow took time to appear as the on-screen narrator of a special prologue for Michael Todd's epic production, Around the World in 80 Days. Although the prologue was generally omitted on telecasts of the film, it was included in home video releases. Murrow's reporting brought him into repeated conflicts with CBS, especially its chairman Bill Paley, which Friendly summarized in his book Due to Circumstances Beyond our Control. See It Now ended entirely in the summer of 1958 after a clash in Paley's office. Murrow had complained to Paley he could not continue doing the show if the network repeatedly provided (without consulting Murrow) equal time to subjects who felt wronged by the program. According to Friendly, Murrow asked Paley if he was going to destroy See It Now, into which the CBS chief executive had invested s.

Hardcover. ix, [1], 342 p. Illustrations. Notes. Glossary. Bibliography. Index A top-secret U.S. Army Special Operations unit has been running covert missions all over the world, from leading death squads to the hideout of drug baron Pablo Escobar to assassinating key al Qaeda members, including Iraqi leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and, in one of their greatest missions, capturing Saddam Hussein. 'The Activity, " as it became known to insiders, has achieved near-mythical status, even among the world's Special Operations elite. Now journalist Michael Smith gets inside this clandestine military team to expose their explosive history and secrets. The Activity's story begins with the abortive attempt to rescue the American hostages from Iran in 1980. One of the main reasons Operation Eagle Claw failed was a chronic lack of intel on the ground, so in January 1981, U.S. military chiefs set up the "Intelligence Support Activity, " a cover name for a secret army surveillance team that could operate undercover anywhere in the world. Hidden from the politicians and the government bean counters, it would carry out deniable operations preparing the way for Delta and SEAL Team Six. Michael Smith has spoken to many former members of the Activity, and we follow them on operations from the war on the drug barons that led Colombian "death squads" to the hideouts of Pablo Escobar and his men. We learn of more recent missions, including snatching war criminals from their safe houses in the Balkans (at one time disguising themselves as French soldiers to lull a Serb warlord into a false sense of security), and operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. Killer Elite reveals the incredible truth behind the world's most secret Special Operations organization, a unit that is at the forefront of the War on Terror. Good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling. Small tear at rear hinge. First edition. First Edition [stated]. First printing [stated].

  • Hardback. Now a "New York Times" Bestseller! "In high school, I wondered whether the Jamaican Americans who made our track team so successful might carry some special speed gene from their tiny island. In college, I ran against Kenyans, and wondered whether endurance genes might have traveled with them from East Africa. At the same time, I began to notice that a training group on my team could consist of five men who run next to one another, stride for stride, day after day, and nonetheless turn out five entirely different runners. How could this be?" We all knew a star athlete in high school. The one who made it look so easy. He was the starting quarterback and shortstop; she was the all-state point guard and high-jumper. "Naturals." Or were they? The debate is as old as physical competition. Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? The truth is far messier than a simple dichotomy between nature and nurture. In the decade since the sequencing of the human genome, researchers have slowly begun to uncover how the relationship between biological endowments and a competitor's training environment affects athleticism. Sports scientists have gradually entered the era of modern genetic research. In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success, "Sports Illustrated" senior writer David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving this great riddle. He investigates the so-called 10,000-hour rule to uncover whether rigorous and consistent practice from a young age is the only route to athletic excellence. Along the way, Epstein dispels many of our perceptions about why top athletes excel. He shows why some skills that we assume are innate, like the bullet-fast reactions of a baseball or cricket batter, are not, and why other characteristics that we assume are entirely voluntary, like an athlete's will to train, might in fact have important genetic components. This subject necessarily involves digging deep into sensitive topics like race and gender. Epstein explores controversial questions such as: Are black athletes genetically predetermined to dominate both sprinting and distance running, and are their abilities influenced by Africa's geography? Are there genetic reasons to separate male and female athletes in competition? Should we test the genes of young children to determine if they are destined for stardom? Can genetic testing determine who is at risk of injury, brain damage, or even death on the field? Through on-the-ground reporting from below the equator and above the Arctic Circle, revealing conversations with leading scientists and Olympic champions, and interviews with athletes who have rare genetic mutations or physical traits, Epstein forces us to rethink the very nature of athleticism. 2013. Reprint. A near fine copy with a previous owners name sticker to the front free endpaper. The d/w is unclipped and also near fine with light edge rubbing.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'I can hardly believe that it is more than half a century since I first stepped on to the stage of the Old Vic Theatre and into a way of life that has brought me the most rewarding professional relationships and friendships. I cannot imagine now ever doing anything else with my life except acting.' - Judi DenchFrom London's glittering West End to Broadway's bright lights, from her Academy Award-winning role as Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love to 'M' in the James Bond films, Judi Dench has treated audiences to some of the greatest performances of our time. She made her professional acting debut in 1957 with England's Old Vic theatre company playing Ophelia in Hamlet , Katherine in Henry V (her New York debut), and then, Juliet. In 1961, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company playing Anya in The Cherry Orchard with John Gielgud and Peggy Ashcroft. In 1968, she went beyond the classical stage to become a sensation as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, adding musical comedy to her repertoire. Over the years, Dench has given indelible performances in the classics as well as some of the greatest plays and musicals of the twentieth century including Noël Coward's Hay Fever, Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, Kaufman and Hart's The Royal Family and David Hare's Amy's View (for which she won the Tony Award). Recently, she made a triumphant return to A Midsummer Night's Dream as Titania, a role she first played in 1962, now played as a theatre-besotted Queen Elizabeth I. Her film career has been filled with piercing performances of unforgettable women: Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown, the terrifying schoolteacher Barbara Covett in Notes on a Scandal and the writer Iris Murdoch in Iris. And, for the BBC, Dench created another unforgettable woman when she brought her great comic timing and deeply felt emotions to the role of Jean Pargetter in the long-running hit BBC series As Time Goes By.And Furthermore is, however, more than the story of a great actress's career. It is also the story of Judi Dench's life: her early days as a child in a family that was in love with the theatre; her marriage to actor Michael Williams; the joy she takes in her daughter, the actress Finty Williams, and her grandson, Sammy. Filled with Dench's impish sense of humor, diamond-sharp intelligence and photos from her personal archives, And Furthermore is the book every fan of the great Judi Dench will cherish.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Winston Churchill receives startling news from a German aristocrat in early 1933 after Adolf Hitler is appointed Chancellor of Germany. The aristocrat has learned of a plot to stage a fake assassination attempt on the new German leader that the Nazis will use as a pretext to declare martial law and liquidate their political opponents. Unknown to Hitler, however, his enemies within the Nazi party-the Black Front-are conspiring with renegade elements of his own SS to turn the fake assassination attempt into a real one. Churchill tells the American newspaper titan William Randolph Hearst of the fake plot and, together, they persuade Mattie McGary, Hearst's top photojournalist and Churchill's adventure-seeking Scottish god- daughter, to investigate. Mattie readily agrees in large part because exposing the fake plot may help her finally shed the unfortunate reputation she has in Germany as 'Hitler's favorite foreign journalist'. Soon after she leaves for Germany, Mattie's fiancé, the American lawyer and former MID agent Bourke Cockran, Jr., also travels to Germany to help his publisher client, Freedom House, acquire the rights to Rear Area Pig, an expose of Hitler's less-than-heroic wartime service. Once in Germany, both Mattie and Cockran find themselves in peril at the hands of the SS loyal to Hitler who will stop at nothing to keep Cockran from acquiring the book and Mattie from learning the truth about the fake plot. Threats to Mattie multiply when SS agents working for the Black Front attempt to coerce her into joining the real plot to kill Hitler. When Cockran learns the Black Front intends to kill Mattie along with Hitler at his alpine retreat, the Berghof, he reluctantly seeks the help of Reichspresident Herman Göring and Kurt von Sturm, a top Göring aide who is also one of Mattie's former lovers. The one-time rivals for Mattie's affection quickly conclude that there is only one way to protect Mattie. They must take out the Black Front snipers before they can assassinate Hitler. And time is running out. author_bio: Michael McMenamin is the author of the critically acclaimed Becoming Winston Churchill, The Untold Story of Young Winston and His American Mentor [Hardcover, Greenwood 2007; Paperback, Enigma 2009]. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1685, James, Duke of York, ascended to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland. As the first catholic monarch in 150 years many believed that his reign would be short and that he would be succeeded by his eldest daughter Mary, a protestant, who was married to her cousin William, Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the United Dutch Provinces. James' close ties to King Louis XIV of France served to fuel the fires of discontent, and when a male heir was born in June 1688 a number of nobles and clergymen, fearing a backlash of Catholic absolutism, invited William of Orange to take the throne.##William duly invaded, and after a desultory campaign, James fled the country for refuge in France, it being claimed that his flight constituted a legal abdication but whilst William sought to consolidate his position in England and Scotland, the Earl of Tyrconnell - James' viceroy in Ireland - began to prepare for his master's restoration. Actively supported by King Louis XIV who viewed any military activity in Ireland as a useful diversion to keep his enemies occupied, James' supporters enjoyed early success, but defeats at Newtownbutler, Derry and - above all - at the Boyne destroyed James' confidence, and he fled his kingdoms for a second and final time. William's army pursued the enemy to the gates of Limerick but failed to capture the city before winter set in, giving the Jacobites a much needed respite in which to reorganize and resupply themselves, during which time military supplies and a coterie of advisors led the by the Marquis de St Ruth, arrived from France. After failing to halt the Williamite crossing of the Shannon in the summer of 1691 St.Ruth, running out of room in which to manoeuvre elected to take up a defensive position and invite an enemy attack, occupying Kilcommadan Hill, near the Galway village of Aughrim. Although his own army was now at the end of a tenuous line of communication and supply, Godard van Reede, commanding the Williamite army, accepted the challenge and the two forces clashed on Sunday 12th July 1691. The strength of the Jacobite position was such that their opponents could initially make no headway, but an unordered redeployment of troops opened up a dangerous gap in their lines and when St. Ruth attempted to correct the error he was killed by enemy cannonfire. AUTHOR: Michael McNally was born in London in 1964. An acknowledged expert on the Williamite War in Ireland, he has also written on diverse subjects such as the Battle of the Boyne, the Varusschlacht, Colditz Castle, the battles of Coronel, the Falklands, Ramillies and more recently Fontenoy. 8pp colour section, 39 b/w photos, 4 b/w ills, 7 maps A vivid and detailed account of the bloodiest battle in Early Modern Irish history. Our copy is thus complete as it stands, and indeed includes the rare 'Index moborum'. William Salmon (1644-1713), medical empiric and author. Contemporaries claimed that as a boy Salmon was apprenticed to a mountebank, entertaining audiences as a 'zany' by 'tumbling through a hoop', and accompanying his master on travels that included a trip to New England. Salmon later established himself in London as an irregular medical practitioner and author, publishing widely on medical, alchemical, and domestic concerns. He published his Botanologia, 'later recalled as 'the swan song of the great English herbalists'' (ODNB), in 1710-11. While the Botanologia is a traditional work in many ways, and was criticised at the time for its Galenic sympathies, it bears the mark of Salmon's travels in the New World: he celebrates the potato, 'which grows in vast plenty in many of our English Gardens, so much that now the Roots are sold in bushels in our London Markets' (p. 905), and mentions that he has seen tomatoes ('love apples') grow in Carolina (p. 29). ESTC T83065; Henrey 1308. Size: (vi), xxiv, 1296, (50)pp. Frontis & many illus. Binding tight.

  • Two volumes, 8vo, pp. viii, 60, [4] subscribers, 248; [iv], iv, 312; including two engraved plates in volume I, and a frontispiece portrait in volume II; each volume with the same 16pp. bookseller's catalogue at end; bound in contemporary calf gilt, red and green lettering pieces (joints slightly cracked). First edition of both volumes. The collected writings of a precocious young man who for a short time eked out a living on the fringes of the London literary world. William Pattison (1706-1727) was the son of a Sussex farmer who leased his land from the Earl of Thanet. The boy showed promise at an early age, and was helped to go to school in Westmorland. In time he began to write verse to secure patronage, and he ended up with a place as a sizar at Sidney-Sussex College, Cambridge. University life, however, proved uncongenial, and after clipping his name from the college books so that he could not be shown to have been sent down, Pattison drifted off to London to pursue a career as a poet. He had high hopes but little money. In what is now perhaps his best-known poem, Effigies Authoris (I 224-231), he describes spending the night on a bench in St. James's Park: the lonely vigil ends with his discovering sixpence in his pocket, which he uses to buy some shelter, and time and leisure to write the poem which he then addresses to the Earl of Burlington, and sends to his house at Chiswick. Most of what is known of Pattison derives from a long biographical sketch in the first volume here, which George Sherburn (Correspondence of Pope, II 440) describes as 'a vivid document in the methods of Grub-Street existence'. From this account it is clear that Pattison spent a good deal of time lounging about the bookshop of Edmund Curll, and here he came to know such professional writers as Walter Harte, Matthew Concanen, and Laurence Eusden the last of these at that time the faintly ridiculous Poet Laureate. Curll himself obviously took a shine to the youngster, and at some point, when Pattison was preparing a volume of his verse for publication by subscription, but at the same time running out of funds, Curll took him home, and gave him a bed. Here he contracted smallpox, and died suddenly, at the age of 21. Pope later circulated the rumour that Curll had starved Pattison to death, but this was simply malice: that Curll was fond of the young man is evident from the very existence of these two posthumous volumes, and from the accompanying memoir, which Curll may well have written himself. Pattison was inevitably later compared to such prodigies as Chatterton, and even Keats, but he is, of course, not in the same class. There are, however, individual pieces of considerable interest, such as a satirical sketch of college life that opens the first volume, or an ambitious imitation of Pope's Eloisa to Abelard. In his short life Pattison published only nine of the poems printed here: these are all marked in the contents with an asterisk. Of these just one, an ode on the accession of George II was printed separately; the rest were scattered in various miscellanies. The first volume contains a four-page list of subscribers; among the 126 names are Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Eustace Budgell, Aaron Hill, Walter Harte, the painter Jonathan Richardson, Laurence Eusden, 'Orator' Henley, the printer Henry Woodfall, and, most notably, Alexander Pope. Two plates are included in the pagination, one of them engraved by Michael Vander Gucht after a design by P. La Vergne (who was employed by Curll). The portrait in the second volume is engraved by Paul Fourdrinier after a drawing by P. Saunders, who appears in the other volume as a 'crayon painter', subscribing for one of the copies on fine paper. At the back of each volume is a catalogue of books for sale by Arthur Bettesworth, who no doubt purchased a number of sets from Curll at a discount. Foxon p. 560. These two volumes do not inevitably turn up as a pair, and the second one is very uncommon: ESTC reports both volumes in only seven libraries (BL, NLS and Bodleian in the UK; and Clark, Kansas, Texas and Rice in the USA). See also Baines and Rogers, Edmund Curll bookseller (2007), pp. 183-6.

FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Small 8vo, 150 x 94 mms., pp. [iii] iv - viii, 159 - 160 blank; [iii] iv - viii, 165 [166 blank], with leaf a2 in volume 2 reading "CONTENTS/ OF THE/ SECOND VOLUME," and on page 161 of volume 2 in the second line, the reading "indisceperpible," and the verso of D5 (age 106) in volume 2 signed D4, page 45 in volume 2 not numbered and the running title with the last "A" in "ABYSSINNA" in italics and spaced from rest of word, contemporary calf, red leather laebls; front free end-paper in each volume detached from inner margin, joints cracked (but firm), extremities worn, but a fair to good copy, with the presentation inscription on the front paste-down end-paper, "The gift of Mrs. Peareth/ to/ Dorothy Robertson," and the autograph "Miss Burrell" on the top margin of the title-page in each volume. Edmund Burke reviewed the novel in The Annual Register, beginning with the assertion that, "in this novel the moral is the principle, and the story is a mere vehicle to convey the instruction. Accordingly the tale is not near so full of incidents, or so diverting in itself, if the ingenious author, if he had not had higher views, might easily have made it; neither is the distinction of character sufficiently attended to: but with these defects, perhaps no book ever inculcated a purer and sounder morality; no book ever made a more just estimate of human life, its pursuits, and its enjoyments." Like many people, Burke was aware of the identity of the author and observed at the end of the review, "there is no doubt he is the same who has done so much for the improvement of our taste and our morals, and employed a great part of his life in an astonishing work for the fixing of the language of this nation; whilst this nation, which admires his works, and profits by them, has done nothing for the author." The giver in the inscription, "Mrs. Peareth", is no doubt the immensely wealthy female philanthropist Susanna (or Susan) Peareth (1752-1821), daughter and co-heiress of Collingwood Foster, Esq., of Alnwick. Collingwood Foster was an attorney at law, and an agent of the Duke of Northumberland, whose seat was Alnwick Castle. Susanna married William Peareth (1734-1810) of Usworth House, County Durham. By the 1820s, Mrs Peareth's wealth was valued at £14,000, according to an entry in the Special Collections catalogue of Durham University Library (). The inscription "Miss Burrell" in the present copy of Johnson's Rasselas may well be connected to the family of William Peareth's kinswoman Barbara Peareth (c.1759-1828), who married John Burrell of Bassington, a village near Alnwick, in 1775. Moreover, a certain William Burrell was one of the executors of Susan Peareth's last will and testament, and his name is frequently mentioned in the will, which is many pages in length (PROB 11/1657/74, National Archives, Kew). For more on these persons and families, see Burke's Landed Gentry, 6th edition (1882), Vol. 2, p. 1248; Joseph Michael Fewster, "The Politics and Administration of the Borough of Morpeth in the later Eighteenth Century", University of Newcastle Ph.D. thesis, 1960, pp. 191, 240 (); and the "Pedigree of Peareth, of Usworth" in Robert Surtees's chapter "Parish of Washington" in The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham: Volume 2, Chester Ward (London, 1820), pp. 40-49, accessible via British History Online (). Susanna Peareth is known even today in County Durham as the founder of a school for local children, which she endowed in 1814, four years after her husband's death and seven years before hers. A commemorative Blue Plaque was erected on the building of the school (still standing, though now a pub) in 2019 (). An old photograph of the school building, and a painted portrait of the foundress, can be seen online (, ). The aforementioned John Burrell is presumably the man of that name who appears in the list of subscribers to John Carr's book The Grove or Rural Harmony (1760), to which a certain "Mr Samuel Johnson" subscribed as well. (Johnson's first honorary doctorate would not be bestowed upon him until five years later; hence he was still, at this time, "Mr Johnson" rather than "Dr Johnson".) The ESTC finds no presentation inscriptions and no book ownership inscriptions relating to the philanthropist Susanna Peareth. In fact, the name Peareth is nowhere to be found in the ESTC database. Fleeman 59.4R/1. Rothschild 1242. The printer was William Strahan, who printed 1500 copies.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Two volumes. Royal folios (measuring 55cm. in height, or 14.5" x 21.5"). The rarer of two known states (the other bearing a 1717 imprint): Volume 1 (Old Testament and Apocrypha) issued with the illustrated engraved title page engraved by John Sturt and dated 1716; and Volume 2 (New Testament) issued with an engraving of the Annunciation on the letterpress title page and dated 1716. A rare copy of the magnificent â Vinegar Bible', in a presentation binding of black levant leather with the Royal Cypher of King George III (surmounted by a crown) stamped in gold in five compartments on the spines of each volume, and the Royal Arms (with "G.R. III" above the crown) embossed at the center of all four covers. Both volumes have early marbled endpapers and wove paper fly leaves, royal blue silk ribbons, all edges gilt. According to an early bookseller's description (tipped onto the front fly leaf): "this copy possesses even an additional interest beyond being the property of, and most likely often read by the Monarch, who expressed a hope â That the time would come when every poor child in his dominions would be able to read the Bible.'" Whether such speculation is true might be subject to some skepticism, but we can only say that this is a presentation binding. Baskett's Bible is a landmark in English graphic art, celebrated both for the beauty of its typographical design and many Baroque engravings, and also for its many typographical errors, including the running headline of Luke, chapter 20, which prints: â The parable of the vinegar,' instead of: â The parable of the vineyard.' In addition to John Sturt, a copperplate engraver who ran one of the first drawing schools in England at St. Paul's Churchyard, other artists and engravers responsible for the illustrations include James Thornhill, one of the most important English exponents of Baroque decorative painting (and the first English-born artist to be knighted), Gerard and Michael Vandergucht, and the Frenchmen Louis Chéron and Louis du Guernier (both of whom lived and died in London). This copy of the Vinegar Bible was later owned by Claudia Wright Lea, the daughter of Delaware Governor Preston Lea, a prominent Quaker whose ancestors came to Pennsylvania with William Penn. She was an important collector of botany and horticulture books (now held at the University of South Carolina), and founder of the Garden Clubs of Aiken and South Carolina. She then donated it to a library, where it was kept locked away except for the occasional exhibit, and from whom we purchased it. Presentation plates are neatly tipped-in along one edge only at the gutter of the front free endpapers. The original leather binding is rubbed with scattered cracking and some scuffing to the spine backs and edges. Most of the original gilt is faded or tarnished, the boards have been at one time neatly re-jointed (visible only along the hinges), both boards of volume one are detached (neatly split between two leaves [A2 and A3] in Genesis, and two leaves [4Q2 and 4Q3] in the Apocrypha), and the front board of volume two is nearly detached. Else both volumes are overall very good, with a few early paper repairs, and one damaged leaf in the New Testament, where a bottom corner piece of missing text was neatly replaced with an early laid-paper sheet with the missing verses completed in manuscript. A handsome and exceedingly rare edition of this famous Bible, in the original presentation binding.
