On view through February 3, 2002, and curated by Associate Curator Diane P. Fischer, the centerpiece of the exhibition is two major but rarely exhibited monumental paintings by Bierstadt, Autumn in the Sierras (Kings River Canyon) (1873), and The Landing of Columbus (1892), lent to the Museum by the City of Plainfield, New Jersey, where they have been for close to a century. (above left: Albert Bierstadt, Autumn in the Sierras (Kings River Canyon), 1873, oil on canvas, 72 x 120 inches, City of Plainfield, New Jersey) Primal Visions spans the period from Bierstadt's first trip to the West in 1859, to the "closing of the frontier" in the 1890s. In addition to the Plainfield works, Primal Visions includes approximately fifty paintings, prints, and photographs by Bierstadt and his contemporaries, including Thomas and Edward Moran, Frederic E. Church, and Eadweard Muybridge, which dramatically place the Plainfield paintings within the context of the period. (right: Albert Bierstadt, The Landing of Columbus, 1892, oil on canvas, 80 x 120 inches, City of Plainfield, New Jersey, Gift of J. Ackerman Coles, 1919)"; 0.30 x 11.9 x 9 Inches; 90 pages.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is "William Everson, The Life of Brother Antoninus" by Lee Bartlett. The book was issued in hardcover format in 1988 by New Directions Publishing Company. The book has a frontispiece photograph, and sixteen halftone black-and-white photographs arranged in two discrete section, as well as a Bibliography and generous notes. William Everson was a Dominican Brother who took the spiritual name of Antoninus. He was one of the most esteemed American poets, and, being a dedicated pacifist, was a conscientious objector to World War II, for which he was incarcerated. It shocked the poetic and religious world when he left forsook his religious vows, and left the Dominican Order to marry the woman he loved. *************************************************************** Here are excerpts from the dust-jacket write-up : "In the annals of American letters, William Everson holds prime place as a poet of conscience and consciousness of self, his richly textured verse mapping his extraordinary inner journey as a social activist, Dominican brother, and preeminent religious and philosophical poet. In this book, Lee Bartlett charts the outer journey, drawing on the reminiscences of the poet, his friends, and a wealth of archival material. ***************************************************** Everson the literary figure has published thirty-seven books of poetry and five prose collections. He has been a Guggenheim fellow, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, and the recipient of the Poetry Society of America's Shelley Memorial Award . Everson the man was a conscientious objector in World War II, and for three and a half years was confined to a work camp. He converted to Catholicism and joined the Dominican Order in 1951 and, as Brother Antoninus, became one of the foremost Catholic poets of our time. *************************************************** "In 1969 Everson dramatically broke his vows to marry the woman he loved. 'This is my habit', he said after a public reading, 'and when I take it off, I take off my own skin. But I have to take it off to find my heart.' In his poetry since then, during what he called his 'integral years', Everson has sought to express the harmony of the physical and the material." There are further enlightening comments on this book on the jacket from Diane Wakowski, Thomas Parkinson, Albert Gelpi, and Michael Davidson. ********************************************* TITLE : William Everson - The Life of Brother Antoninus / AUTHOR : Lee Bartlett (b. 1950 - ) / IMPRINT : New Directions Publishing House / PLACE : New York / DATE : (1988) / EDITION : First Edition / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Contains photograph illustrations, a Prologue, Appendixes, Notes, a Bibliography, and an Index. 272 pages; 5 1/4" x 8", light gray , cloth-covered boards and spine, with gilt lettering and decorative embellishment on spin; Photo-pictorial dust-jacket with unclipped front flap. ************************************************ CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD - JACKET : VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR - Clean and bright with negligible signs of handling. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. Signed Limited Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. Published in a small and limited print run whose limitation is not stated. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Dolce & Gabbana and The Dream Project: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of contemporary photography. Introduction by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. In metallic-silver DJ, which glows against the light, and with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Domenico Dolce's and Stefano Gabbana's "Hollywood". High Fashion's glamorous and starstruck homage to Hollywood. With a brilliant twist that only Dolce & Gabbana could have pulled off: Every Hollywood star featured in the book is wearing (but of course) Dolce & Gabbana, one of the sexiest, most elegant, and most cutting-edge names in contemporary fashion. The book is conceived and realized as the modern-day version of Diana Vreeland's classic, "Allure" (first published in 1980, reissued in 2002, one year before this book). It is an adoring movie fan's scrapbook of her (or his) favorite Hollywood stars, divided into six alluring parts: "Glamour", "Power", "Romance", "Red Carpet", "Seduction", and "Leading Men". The stars are A-Listers and include Glenn Close, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst, Goldie Hawn, Elizabeth Hurley, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Diane Lane, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Julianne Moore, Demi Moore, Julia Roberts, Isabella Rossellini, Susan Sarandon, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, among the women; Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Antonio Banderas, Adrien Brody, Leonardo diCaprio, Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon, Colin Farrell, Josh Hartnett, Jude Law, Heath Ledger, Dermot Mulroney, Brad Pitt, Dennis Quaid, Owen Wilson, and Billy Zane, among the men. Except for "Red Carpet", which consists of "paparazzi" snapshots, all of the photographs are portraits, taken by the best fashion/celebrity photographers of our time: Gian Paolo Barbieri, Walter Chin, Michel Comte, Patrick Demarchelier, David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Robert Maxwell, Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts, Mark Seliger, Peggy Sirota, Mario Testino, Ellen von Unwerth, Albert Watson, and Bruce Weber, among others. An absolute "must-have" title for Dolce & Gabbana and Hollywood collectors. This is a copy of the Signed Limited Edition. It is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the title page by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the regular trade edition, which is NOT signed. A rare signed copy thus. Some of the world's biggest stars, dressed by two of the most brilliant fashion designers, and photographed by some of the finest photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 284323526X. Signed by Author.
