Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A young and successful journalist working in New York, Maureen English appears to have the perfect life and family. But Maureen's husband, a highly respected fellow reporter, has in private a tendency towards alcohol and violent abuse. When the situation at home becomes intolerable, Maureen takes her baby daughter and flees. In a Maine fishing town she assumes a new identity and spends six weeks battling sub-zero temperatures, the intrusive glare of the townsfolk - and her fears of discovery. Against the force of the wintry sea - the cawing of the gulls, the lobstermen hauling their catch, the press of waves against the rocks - Maureen settles into the rhythms of a new life. Two married men pursue her, and one captures her heart. But this calming respite ends suddenly, leaving in its wake a murder, a rape charge, a suicide and a helpless child. Nearly nineteen years later, a cache of documents regarding Maureen English - abused, accused and imprisoned - are given to her daughter by the journalist who made her name reporting the case. The truth should lie within them, but the papers raise far more questions than they answer. A young and successful journalist working in New York, Maureen English appears to have the perfect life and family. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - I never knew my grandmother, Mary Ellen Kerr Peach. Then some old letters came into my possession; my paper chase began. I learnt how she epitomised the young, educated women of a century ago who sought to shatter the shibboleths of sexism by persistence and conviction. She wanted to teach, and thus guide girls and boys equally towards worthwhile adulthood. She died too young but in the time available to her I hope she was content to have made her mark, if not any headlines. I feel certain we all have a Mary Ellen in our family histories; it just needed, in my case, a little shoebox to set me on the trail. Maureen Mitson was born in Kendal in England and moved with her family to Adelaide in 1954. After marriage she travelled, to live over the next fifteen years in the UK, Singapore, Cyprus, Malta. With her husband Fred, and two children, she returned to Adelaide in 1977. She celebrated the completion of her own academic education on her fiftieth birthday with a degree in Communication and Literary Studies. As a member of the Tea Tree Gully Library and the North East Writers' groups, she has won prizes for her short stories and poetry at the Salisbury Writers' Festival and had stories read over the air by Adelaide Radio and by the Queensland Story Teller. Also a member of Friendly Street, and Gawler Poets, she has been fortunate to win prizes for her poetry and has featured in anthologies and also in Ginninderra Press's The Heart of Port Adelaide and Mindfields. Paper Chase is her first published novella.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover in Fine in red cloth. Dust Wrapper is in Near Fine, due to some very light soiling and edge wear. SIGNED BY NANCY REAGAN on the Title Page. This book was from the NBC news White Paper reported by White House Correspondent Chris Wallace. These interviews were conducted by NBC reporters and White House correspondent Wallace for a TV documentary on Nancy Reagan. The book contains more than 150 photos (100 in color), and the words of the First Lady and the President, their friend Michael Deaver, their children and others. From the Reagan Library: "Nancy Reagan (July 6, 1921-March 6, 2016) was a film and television actress, mother, second wife of President Ronald Reagan, First Lady of California and the United States, and involved in multiple charities. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she majored in English and Drama. She graduated in 1943 and then pursued a professional acting career. In her acting career, Nancy Davis worked in stage, film, and television productions. She retired from acting in 1962. She and her husband, actor Ronald Reagan, appeared together in her last film, Hellcats of the Navy, 1956. She and Ronald married on March 4, 1952 at The Little Brown Church in the San Fernando Valley, California. It was her first and only marriage and Reagan's second marriage. He had previously been married to actress Jane Wyman and they had two children, Maureen and Michael. Together the Reagans had two children, Patricia Ann Reagan (Patti Davis) born on October 21, 1952 and Ronald Prescott Reagan (Ron Reagan) born on May 20, 1958. Ronald Reagan ran successfully for Governor of California in 1966 and Mrs. Reagan became the First Lady of California when he was sworn-in in January 1967. Nancy Reagan began some of her more public charitable work at this time starting with regular visits to wounded Vietnam War veterans, hospitals and homes for the elderly, and schools for physically and emotionally handicapped children. She became active in projects concerning prisoners of war (POWs) and servicemen missing in action. She wrote a syndicated column, often commenting on this issue and donating her salary to the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia. The Reagans entered the White House in January 1981 and First Lady Nancy Reagan's special project was fighting drug and alcohol abuse among youth. To spotlight the problem, she traveled nearly 250,000 miles throughout the United States and several countries in conjunction with her campaign to fight substance abuse. She appeared on television talk shows, taped public service announcements, wrote guest articles and visited prevention programs and rehabilitation centers across the country to talk with young people and their parents. In spite of the controversies, she had many admirers. In each Annual Gallup Poll from 1981 to 1989, the American public voted Mrs. Reagan one of the ten most admired women in the world, and in 1981, 1985, and 1987, voted her number one. She died of consumptive heart failure at her Bel Air, California home on March 6, 2016. She was 94. Nancy Davis Reagan is buried on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library grounds next to her husband, President Ronald Reagan. Signed by Author(s).
