  • RHB.  lfpb.  144pp.The second letter to the Corinthians is a touchstone for pastors seeking advice on effective ministry. It is a revealing window into the tumult of Paulâ s relationship with this congregation that shows Paulâ s concern for the spiritual welfare of a local church. Although he loved the Corinthians dearly and labored for them intensely, their relationship was marked by the tensions and challenges that are acutely familiar to church leaders today: unclear expectations, comparison to other pastors, criticisms of ministry style, vocational stresses, disputes over money, and more. Reuben Bredenhof expertly unpacks these complexities and reveals Paulâ s vision for Christ-shaped gospel ministryâ a vision that can help you, too.Table of Contents:Introduction: Searching for a Model of MinistryServing under PressureBuilding a Ministerial IdentityPastoring Like a FatherPreaching for the Glory of ChristFacing a Barrage of CriticismHandling Money WiselyBeing a Willing SuffererWorking with PurposeAfterword: Traveling from Corinth to TodayAuthorReuben Bredenhof serves as minister of the Mount Nasura Free Reformed Church in Western Australia.Endorsementsâ The premise of this book is straightforward: ministers today can learn much from the ministry of the apostle Paul in first-century Corinth. No clever, but soon-outdated pragmatism here. This is a book from a seasoned pastor that is solidly grounded in the God-inspired words of Paul about his pastoral labors in a difficult place. Any minister who longs to serve the Lord in accordance with His Word will profit from this volume. Laypeopleâ especially those who serve as elders or on a pastor search committeeâ will find it insightful as well. Generous-hearted laypeople would do well to consider providing a copy for their pastor. Any pastor who receives a copy should be grateful for it, for in these pages is much helpful wisdom.â  â Donald S. Whitney, professor of biblical spirituality and associate dean at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. Author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Praying the Bible, and Family Worship.â Many books analyze the apostle Paulâ s theology and missionary work. Reuben Bredenhof examines the ministry of Paul the pastor in his book Weak Pastor, Strong Christ. His careful study of 2 Corinthians unfolds an apostolic model for pastoral work. Here, ministers straining under the burden of unbiblical expectations will find relief; those unsure of how to model their ministry will find godly help. He summons all pastorsâ in joy or trialâ to rely upon Christâ s all-sufficient grace, saying with Paul, â when I am weak, then I am strong.â â - Charles M. Wingard, associate professor of pastoral theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, and author of Help for the New Pastorâ In church contexts that define leadership in terms of image, personality, and technique, Paulâ s theology of pastoral ministry in 2 Corinthians is uncomfortably counter-cultural: humiliating in transparency about weaknesses, resolute in integrity, andâ above allâ exalting Christ instead of Self. Pastor Bredenhofâ s exploration of the glorious gospel paradoxâ Christâ s strength is displayed through weak pastors, Godâ s priceless treasure conveyed in jars of clayâ will both challenge and encourage pastors in our new covenant ministry. Pastor, whether you are discouraged by criticism or tempted to self-congratulation by fruitfulness, Weak Pastor, Strong Christ will bring biblical clarity to your view of yourself and of the service to which your gracious Lord has called you.â  â Dennis E. Johnson, professor emeritus of practical theology, Westminster Seminary Californiaâ Reuben Bredenhof gives us a fine, thoughtful, engaging, and readable study of 2 Corinthians that opens up the apostle Paulâ s pastoral mind and heart to todayâ s pastors and church members. Those in pastoral ministry will find this book immensely encouraging.

Paperback. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dj. Offprint. One published offprint paper accompanies the author's entire collection of personal travel diaries. These span the period from 1927 to 1986, and include a couple of minaiture leather-bound Collins "Midget Diary" No 274 & No 276 for the years 1927 and 1930. Miss Kennedy had a lifelong interest in archaeology, church history and old architecture of the crumbling ruin variety on up. Her diaries are scribbly in some places, mostly neatly written in fountain pen on lined school exercise books, around 50 in number. There are also several actual diaries, one a leatherbound one dating from 1914 but re-used for 1930. The 1949 diary says every day from August 27th to September 5th "off to festival" referring to the 2nd year of the Edinburgh festival. There is a complete book of write-up of this one week alone, which would make a fascinating account of one person's festival back at the beginning. The other journals are full of trips and outings, mainly around England to places of archaeological and church interest. I haven't even touched the surface of most of these Journals, suffice to say Miss Kennedy was a well respected if minor researcher in several fields, and made many donations of documents to various archives around the UK. There is a small bundle of un-annotated postcards, photo-cards and negatives, and even a letter containing a fold-out slice of the Kennedy family tree, albeit referring to Stevensons from the 1600's. Never mind the price tag, we feel this collection makes up an archive too priceless to throw away, and are really looking for someone out there who can give it a good home. Currently sits in a tattered cardboard box with total weight about 10 kilos.

Her ability to combine the scripture with contemporary applications makes these inspiring examples of the art of preaching at its finest. Sermon titles include: What Is Priceless (Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52) Are You A Risk Taker (Matthew 14:22-33) Who Is Jesus To You (Matthew 16:13-20) Is Big Brother Watching You (Matthew 18:15-20) Why Doesn't God Do Something (Matthew 21:33-46) Marilyn Saure Breckenridge is the senior pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Wadena, Minnesota. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, I've tried to condense a number of thoughts and insights that I've been struggling with as a minister in a society that is both Post-Modern and 'Post-Christian'. Serving an historic denomination has turned out to be a great vehicle for innovation as it allowed me to offer the church a broader way of doing theology that I believe makes sense in our contemporary life. After all, our Calvinistic roots provide a clarion call for theological innovation. The cry, Reformed and always being reformed has been the motto for Reformed Christians for over five centuries. I've used the late Ben Lacy Rose's very good contemporary view of T.U.L.I.P as a baseline for the series. His insights are priceless. Brian McLaren's brief mention of a kinder, gentler Calvinism in his book A Generous Orthodoxy serves as the outline for much of the content of the five newer ways to view T.U.L.I.P. He makes it easy to build on his brief musings. In fact, McLaren offers a challenge to denominations to take up his suggestions to update their theology for the 21st Century. I guess this is what I'm trying to do in this book. My hope is that these brief chapters will catch your attention and pique your curiosity. By revisiting the old acrostic T.U.L.I.P. in our day, you and the church will appreciate not only our historic viewpoints but also be challenged to consider our faith and beliefs in new ways for a new day. Theology really does matter for believers. I hope this brief work can help the larger church find this to be so. Rev. Dr. Keith Curran, 2021.

  • Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - When the risen Lord explained Isaiah 53 to his Emmaus Road disciples, their hearts burned within them; and his disciples today who read Professor MacLeod's explanation of this priceless text will have their hearts rekindled. David MacLeod is heir to the ages of study on this princely text. And now he has lavished the Church with a splendid exposition of it that is rich in content and felicitous in style. Those who hunger for the Word of God and those who thirst for the Gospel will be filled. Not all will agree with all of MacLeod's interpretations, such as his understanding of healing and the atonement, but all will profit from his research. --Bruce K. Waltke, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Regent College Among the 100 or more books now in print devoted to the key chapter of Isaiah 53, this work is outstanding. It is scholarly and reverent; devotional and evangelistic. It is a stout defense of the prophecy of Jesus as the suffering servant. The exposition deals with the theological issues and provides illustrations for the reader. Each page has footnotes (810 in all)! These provide grammatical, lexical, and interpretive support for the exposition. Alternative views are reviewed. Five appendices cover Jewish views, Handel's Messiah and other hymnody, and issues concerning the atonement. The Hebrew text is printed and transliterated as well as translated. Major Christian scholars' expositions and commentaries are regularly cited including leading figures of Church history. For your devotions, your apologetics and your teaching, this is the book to own. Buy one for your pastor. --Edwin A. Blum, General Editor, Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) Isaiah 53 is one of the most magnificent chapters in the Bible. But because it is so detailed and profound, expositors need as much help as they can get to understand and explain the text. David MacLeod has provided such an indispensable work. It will be clear to any reader that this book represents a lifetime of careful research in the text that has been refined through regular teaching and preaching. For those who want to understand this Servant Song, every expression and every statement, but may not have the time or the tools to do it, this work will be a rich and rewarding addition to their libraries. --Allen P. Ross, Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School David MacLeod has written a remarkably helpful and thorough exposition of Isaiah 52:13-53:12, one of the most amazing and important biblical prophecies of the Messiah Jesus. From the carefully researched details of each verse to the valuable appendices of related topics at the end of the book, Dr. MacLeod relates the theological significance and apologetic value of this crucial passage. Most importantly, he demonstrates, in the words of F. B. Meyer, ''There is only one brow upon which this crown of thorns will fit,'' namely, Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth, the Messiah of Israel and the world. --Michael Rydelnik, Professor of Jewish Studies and Bible, Moody Bible Institute The Suffering Servant of the Lord is both a study of messianic prophecy and a unique portrait of our Lord Jesus Christ. Dr. David MacLeod has produced an outstanding biblical and theological exposition. His gifts and commitment shine through. This is a book for your life, your ministry, and your library. --Barry R. Leventhal, Distinguished Senior Professor and Director of the Graduate School of Church Ministry and Missions, Southern Evangelical Seminary David MacLeod was born in Sydney on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. At the age of eleven he moved with his family to Massachusetts. Five years later he was converted to faith in Jesus Christ. After graduating from Worcester State University (B.S.Ed. [1965]), he received his theological education at Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M. [1969], Ph.D.

Raymond's application of the Gospel is a revelation. I highly recommend this book! - Ted Haggard, St. James Church, Colorado Springs, CO. The story of Ray Thompson's life has some very dark sides. He shares his testimony of the Living God who alone can shine light into such stories. My prayer is no matter where you are on the journey of life, that you find this same God, who also wants to shine light into your story. - Bob Mendelsohn, Jews for Jesus Australia National Director I'm truly inspired by this work. Ray Thompson brilliantly portrayed his journey and how the Lord delivered him from darkness to light. God's mercy and grace was demonstrated in his life through this powerful message. May the Lord continue to bless the author and all those who read this book. - Sean Theodore, Pastor of Abundant Grace Church in Derry, NH There are high roads and there are low roads. Delft] to flyleaf, stamp of the Association of the Bar Library, NYC to blank margin of a2 and its shelfmark to first title verso. Preserved in box. Excellent, crisp copies, rubricated and in contemporary boards still retaining the original wooden pegs, of the first editions of two important legal commentaries on the Decretals . These were collections of papal decrees, issued regularly throughout the middle ages for the use of jurists, which regulated the functions, structure, personnel and law of the Catholic Church. They offer priceless insight into the everyday legal and theological questions of the age. A precious reference work, this copy was bequeathed by Jacobus Wilhelmus to the library of Nieuwe Kerk, Delft, c.1500, where it was probably chained. Bartolomeo da Brescia (d.1258) studied canon law at Bologna and was the author of numerous legal works. Written when Bartolomeo was still a student, Casus decretorum - a revised and enlarged version of Benincasa da Arezzo s (d.1206) Casus decretum - is a commentary on the Decretum , a legal textbook by the C12 jurist Gratian and one of the 6 works that formed the Corpus Juris Canonici . Later Bartolomeo wrote the standard Glossa used for centuries, based on the work of Johannes Teutonicus. Casus reprises Gratian s subdivisions into distinctio , causa and questio , and deals with a great variety of cases spanning the office of bishops, monks and priests, synods, the resignation of a pope, and various regulations pertaining to clerics concerning questions as wide-ranging as property ownership, inheritance and fornication. Little is known of the canonist Michael de Dalen, author of this commentary on two important collections of Decretals which followed those of Gregory IX. The Liber Sextus Decretalium was issued under Pope Boniface VIII in 1258 and the Constitutiones Clementis V under Clement V in 1314. They were the last collections of decretals overseen by a Pope.
