Hardcover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original bookplate album containing 125 bookplates, thirty-one letters, and one envelope. Dark green cloth-covered boards with black string binding. The envelope and most of the bookplates and letters are tipped in on gray paper leaves in the album. A few of the bookplates are enclosed in letters. Many of the letters are dated in the 1930s. Most of the bookplates are undated but one is dated 1901. Bookplates, letters and envelope are c. 1900s-1930s. Album: 9 1/2" x 11." Bookplates range in size between about 1 1/4" x 2" and 5" x 7 1/2." Letters also vary in size, but most are about 5" x 7." Unpaginated, forty-eight pages. Some pages have multiple bookplates and letters tipped in on them. Pages are very clean and intact but many are torn from the binding and laid in. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for light rubbing and slight wear to extremities. Bookplates are virtually pristine and intact except for slight age toning and possible faint glue residue. Letters and envelope are very clean and intact except for light age toning, a few fold lines, and slight wrinkling. The collection as a whole is Very Good. A charming bookplate album filled with beautiful bookplates printed in a variety of colors on different types of paper. The album was likely kept by Lenala Martin of the Lassen County Free Library. The album contains other paper ephemera as well. In total, the album contains 125 bookplates, thirty-one letters including two that are printed and addressed to anonymous recipients and one that is a partial handwritten letter, and one envelope. Excluding the partial letter, most, if not all, of the handwritten letters are addressed to Lenala Martin. The following is an incomplete list that summarizes some of the album's contents (each listed item comprises the name on the bookplate, if available, and a description of the bookplate's illustration in brackets; letters and the envelope are described as such): Calaveras County Library [building]; Toni Lake [boy and fish]; William L. Degn [house in woods]; Hoover War Library [seated figure]; 1940 letter from Roxie Hall, Librarian at Calaveras County Free Library, to Martin about Toni Lake, a girl whose mother commissioned bookplates for her that were made by author Esther Waite; Manuel A. Ortiz [multiple plates; ships and maritime]; Lino Antonio Affonso [castle and ship]; Dr. Ant. Okolo-Kulak [coat of arms]; envelope to Martin; [snail with fern]; Ione [sea]; 1939 letter from Ione K. Wieckel to Martin about the "Ione" and snail bookplates on recto and how they were designed by Paul McPharlin of Detroit; Flora Neil Davidson [flowers and books]; Charles Kendall Adams [1901, coat of arms]; 1938 letter from Davidson to Martin about bookplates; Samuel W. Vose [medieval portrait]; Heraldic Library of John William Jameson [Victorian portrait]; George Henry Corey [coat of arms]; 1939 letter from Corey to Martin about him sending her the Jameson and Vose bookplates; J. F. Schmid [man sitting on books reading]; Helen Lang [sheet music]; Marjorie R. Edwards [sun and flower design]; 1938 letter from Edwards to Martin about bookplates on recto and exchanging plates; Betsie Diamond [satyr]; Jacob Edouard Diamond [fountain in garden]; Elizabeth Diamond [Pegasus]; Helen Wilson [cabin]; 1938 letter from Elizabeth Diamond to Martin about bookplate exchange; and undated letter from Wilson to Martin about bookplates.
