  • Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the darkest corners of our lives, where sorrow, trauma, grief and pain reside, there exists a profound capacity for resilience and hope. Telling Stories in the Dark by Jeffrey Munroe is a uniquely inspiring non-fiction book that illuminates the transformative power of sharing our most profound experiences of suffering.Within the pages of this remarkable compilation, you will encounter the stories of ordinary individuals who, when confronted with profound adversity, chose to do something extraordinary: they transformed their pain. Munroe, a skilled storyteller and compassionate guide, takes us on a poignant journey through the lives of these remarkable individuals who have harnessed the redemptive potential of their suffering, what Munroe's mentor Frederick Buechner calls 'the stewardship of pain.'When we tell our stories, and when we listen well to each other's stories, we discover much about what it means to be human. We discover there are others like us. We discover our feelings aren't unusual. We discover we aren't alone. And sometimes we discover God in the midst of our stories. In the Foreword, Sarah Arthur, the author of a dozen of her own inspiring books, describes Telling Stories in the Dark as helping readers to rediscover 'a faith that finds itself in the dark. Here in these pages, that's what you'll find. Story after story of those who walk a similar road. Conversations with those who suffer about how they do -- or don't -- experience the God who promises never to leave us nor forsake us. Before intellectually exploring any of his chosen topics, Jeff embeds those topics in the lived reality of ordinary people on their worst possible days. Because this is where God meets us.'Karen Mulder, founder of the Wisdom of the Wounded ministry, writes: 'Jeff Munroe is a masterful storyteller, brilliantly weaving together the compelling real-life stories of individuals who've been wounded by tragedy with experts' commentary on how to find insight, hope and healing from each narrative. We all experience deep loss at some point in our lives, and Telling Stories in the Dark is a rich contemplation on navigating trauma and grief.'Among the many authors, scholars and counselors you will meet in the chapters of this book are the late Frederick Buechner, the bestselling author who is one of Munroe's mentors, plus Roger Nelson, pastor of Hope Christian Reformed Church in Oak Forest, Illinois; clinical psychologist Daniel Rooks; scholar and author Marilyn McEntyre; Mitch Kinsinger, pastor of Arlington Hills Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minnesota; therapist Mary Anderson; Suzanne McDonald and Chuck DeGroat, professors at Western Theological Seminary; poet Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer; pastor Sophie Mathonnet-VanderWell; Yale University professor emeritus Nicholas Wolterstorff; and artist Makoto Fujimura. This book is a poignant reminder that no matter how deep our wounds may be, we possess the innate ability to transform our pain into a source of strength and growth.Through the power of sharing our stories, Munroe invites us to connect with these brave individuals, each of whom has found a unique path to healing, and in doing so, he illuminates the collective potential for resilience that exists within us all.Telling Stories in the Dark is ideal for individual reflection and group discussion. It's a great gift for friends who are grieving, because Telling Stories is guaranteed to leave readers inspired, uplifted, and deeply moved.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this suite of 25 interconnected poems, Jason Gerrish through his speaker Hal Lavoie, takes up a solitary residence in a Fleetwood trailer on a farm off Old State Road to teach himself to write.Old State RoadrepresentsHal's struggle to make sense of his previously squandered life and his attempt to chisel it into Art. Brad Dalton's accompanying25 ambrotype and tintype photographs of dilapidated rural scenes reinforce Gerrish's idea of time having slipped away and is captured in his stark, artistic images. George Douglas Anderson, Publisher & Editor Bold Monkey '. allow your eye some time to really absorb' Daulton's tin- or ambrotype photographs 'the twisted trunks and vines, those layered textures of snow and field and barn and smokehouse, the lines and shadows of ax and banjo and the edgy contours of all those skulls and bones. The primal, visceral imagery in those visuals mirrors the intense and precise language in the poems and together they pack awalloping emotionalpunch that will keep you reeling for hours afterward.' Dave Simms, Senior Editor at The Raw Art Review 'For a grizzly old beaten poet, the opportunity and privilege to read Jason Gerrish' collection 'Old State Road' came like a rejuvenating snow storm that cleanly wiped the tracks and voices of what had gone before: these poems make a journey of their own: every poem: there are crevices you plunge into and that will scare you, they will make you reflective, they will make you laugh and cry: Gerrish then hauls your ass up and out of the crevice and points to a different direction and you gladly follow his authentic deliberate footsteps that are polished with a clarity of quality that grizzly old beaten poets rarely have the chance to read these days: poems like: the brilliant 'Crow': 'You Know a Loneliness' 'This Old Woman I like' 'Angst' 'Aideen' 'The Lone Oak' I haven't mentioned the outstanding, beautifully haunting photographs by Brad Daulton: buy this book and find out why 'Old State Road' will be one of this year's best for sure.' (1825 or 1835-1905), saying "We have just come back from Church thro' a deluge of rain and as I see from yours that James", their brother Sir James ANDERSON (1824-1893, who captained the Great Eastern when she laid the first successful Atlantic cable in 1866), "is going to Annan tomorrow", he writes to enclose [not present] "young Austin's letter", (probably the son of the Rev. John Mein Austin, minister of St Mary's Dumfries, 1851-1861), "also one I had from Prof. Stevenson Macadam Edinb." (1829-1901, Professor of Chemistry), "anent Jamie's apprenticeship", (Wellwood's son, b. 1856), Wellwood and family are appreciating "home comforts after roughing it so long at Shore Cottage", worth it "if we keep a clean bill of health thro' the winter" at "the expense of being fashionable & leaving Town when everyone is away", in September they will be thankful "for the one quiet day in the week to look back on the past and forward to the future", life would be "wearisome. without that one blessed day" that gives "a freshness to all the rest" and "revives the hearts of those who would otherwise despair", talking of their mother, (Agnes, née Richardson, 1794-1886), and of the visit of their brother Robert (b. circa 1827), "We had a great night at the Station the night he left, a lot of jolly company came to see him off", made more jolly by the "Train being 1½ hours late", Wellwood sends her "D[um]f]ries] Papers & Annan Observer, you will notice review of [Sir] James's Book", (Statistics of Telegraphy, 1872), "in Cuthbertson's paper, if he calls there he should take notice of it", Wellwood turns to son Jamie's situation, "We are advised by all to go in for the apprenticeship under Dr S. Macadam - he is nearly 16. & 3 years at business wd make him 19 - quite a man", and talks of living arrangements, he could board with Aunt Jane "& sleep with James Walters who is re-engaged with Cowans [the Edinburgh papermakers] at £50 p.a.", and go with James Walters to the "School of Arts this winter to study Mathematics Latin & French. and help each other. Jamie is not likely to change this long cherished hobby", Wellwood turns to "the address die" which he does not think "will look well for the envelopes - wd Maggie", apparently their stepmother Margaret Milligan, (1826-1891), "not rather have the original crest on them, either blind or in colours. McWhinnie", apparently their head of printing, "stamped off small Box of Baskerville [wove paper]. you will observe the Die is very very faint for blind stamping. Your affectionate Br[other]", crest of an oak with motto 'Stand Sure', 4 sides 8vo, Dumfries, 25th Augus Wellwood Anderson had succeeded his father, John Anderson (1792-1858) in the family business of Bookselling, Stationery and Printing, at 74 High Street, Dumfries. 'Jamie' followed his uncle. He worked for the Eastern Telegraph Company, of which Sir James was General Manager, on the island of Syros in the Cyclades and in Athens from 1892, and marrying in Smyrna in 1897.
