Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'The boundary line between instinct and reason is of a very shadowy nature'-Edgar Allan Poe (1840) With its twenty-one stories of serial killers and sociopaths, fixations and fetishes, breakdowns and bad decisions crafted by authors as diverse as their writing styles, Shadowy Natures leads fans of psychological horror down dark and treacherous roads to destinations they will be too unsettled to leave. Under the tutelage of a charismatic caretaker, a young boy learns that the rules don't apply to 'exceptional' people; under the blinders of parental love, a parent considers the after-effects of his daughter's criminal exoneration. One suburban dad finds himself inexplicably drawn to something he spies while walking the family pet, and another discovers buried compulsions awakened by his daughter's dental deformity. Sorting through a deceased relative's belongings, a family stumbles upon a horrific treasure, as a drifter with a dark secret wanders the Old West. While a military officer spends his days delivering despair, a procrastinator is consumed by guilt after making a deadly mistake, and a businessman stumbles upon a bizarre family photo gallery. Postpartum paranoia and isolation threaten one mother's sanity until an outside threat pushes her over the edge while another mother picks at her son's psychological scabs until he scrambles for release. Urban blight bears down on a convenience store owner; a middle-aged man takes a terminally ill acquaintance captive to avenge his lover's death; a depressed suburban housewife makes a strange new friend, and a neglected teen finds solace and inspiration in a vicious classmate's company. When her brother moves back into the family home, a woman becomes consumed by what he leaves behind; when a man disappears, his sister considers the warning signs he may have been leaving since childhood. One couple abandons urban life for the isolating wilderness while another plays a dangerous game, hoping to rekindle their relationship. While one son revisits the scene of his father's horrific crime spree, another returns home to ponder his family's well-hidden secret. From unique twists on traditional terror tropes to fresh frights found in the most innocuous of places, these tales will surprise and unnerve even the most veteran horror fans. Featuring brand new fiction from Jeremy Billingsley, C.W. Blackwell, Barrie Darke, Matthew R. Davis, Christina Delia, KC Grifant, Liam Hogan, K.N. Johnson, Thomas Kearnes, Rudy Kremberg, Scotty Milder, Bryan Miller, Hollee Nelson, Elin Olausson, James Edward O'Brien, Andrew Punzo, Lee Rozelle, Joseph Rubas, Paul Stansfield, Louis Stephenson, and Thomas Vaughn.

The Cover stamping and design of the edition by Daniel B. Bianchi and Selma Ordewer. Introduction by Alan Dershowitz Gary May is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Delaware. He is the author of several books, including The Informant: The FBI, the Ku Klux Klan and the Murder of Viola Liuzzo and Bending Toward Justice: The Voting Rights Act and the Transformation of American Democracy. In 1948, William W. Remington was one of the bright young men in the Truman administration. He was tall and handsome, a product of Dartmouth and Columbia. From 1940 on, he had risen through government ranks, serving on wartime boards, the President's Council of Economic Advisors, and eventually as a major official in the Department of Commerce, with a promising future ahead. By 1954, however, Remington was dead--assassinated in his cell by a team of inmates in a high-security Federal prison. In Un-American Activities, historian Gary May tells the fascinating story of William Remington--a story of intrigue, injustice, government corruption, and anti-Communist hysteria. May labored for eight years in reconstructing Remington's case, searching through FBI files, government documents, and waging an epic battle against then-U.S. Attorney Rudy Guiliani to become the first historian to obtain access to grand jury records. The result is a brilliant account of one man's tragic odyssey and a government run amok. Remington's future collapsed in 1948, when he was charged with being a Communist and a Soviet spy. The accuser was Elizabeth Bentley, an admitted ex-Communist herself and a former courier for Soviet spymasters. Remington's life fell into a whirlpool, as he fought government improprieties, illegalities, and the assumption he was guilty. Cleared by government loyalty boards, he was indicted by a grand jury--whose foreman was secretly helping Elizabeth Bentley prepare her memoirs. Remington suffered through two trials for perjury, and the chief witness against him was his own embittered ex-wife. He was convicted and sentenced to the federal penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where his reputation as a Communist preceded him. But May's account also offers fascinating insight into the depth of Soviet penetration into wartime America: As he follows Remington's life, from the radical circles at Dartmouth and the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1930s through his Washington career, he finds that Remington may well have been guilty of the charges against him. Gary May is one of the leading historians writing about postwar America. His first book, China Scapegoat, won the Allan Nevins Prize and was hailed as "as well as a novel, as powerful as a good film" by the The Los Angeles Times. Here he brings his analytical and narrative skills to bear on one of the forgotten stories of the McCarthy era, uncovering a gripping tale of espionage, corruption, and personal tragedy.

Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First edition. The dustjacket has a small chip missing tope edge, with some short tears and edgewear. Inscribed "For Dick Bobbitt Best Wishes from the foot of the beautiful Big Horns Ann Gorzalka". And, with a previous owner gift inscription: "Happy Birthday, Dick! May 14, 1985 from the Gibbs crew". Signed copies rarely offered. A tribute to 21 saddlemakers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as modern saddlemakers. As inexorably interwoven in the mythos of the American West as its intricate wild rose motif is sculpted into leather, the Sheridan-style saddle elevates a once-utilitarian cowboy artifact into a museum masterpiece. For nearly 130 years, local saddlers have crafted the beautiful, highly recognizable Sheridan-style saddles through such masters as Otto and John Ernst, Rudy Mudra, Lloyd Davis, Reuben Bloomberg, Don King, Billy Gardner, Joseph Crackenberger, Chester Hape and Bob Johnson, constituting a tight-knit, intergenerational guild of craftsmen who made Sheridan a mecca for saddles. ?Sheridan was an epicenter of saddle making in the ?50s and ?60s, but most of them have retired or died. An important work for anyone interested in the history of the American West and it's collectables. Gorzalka published three books and many articles and photos nationally, regionally and locally. She was a member of the Women's Writer's Club, Big Horn Women's Club, Wyoming Cattle Association, Sheridan County Historical Society, Big Horn City Historical Society, and the Western Writers of America. Her son Lonnie is considered among "the young traditionalists" of Sheridan saddlemaking. Signed by Author.
