Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Book Club Edition. A Book Club Edition. The award-winning, bestselling author of The Back of the Turtle and The Inconvenient Indian masters the comic mystery novel in this series opener, starring ex-cop Thumps DreadfulWaterThumps DreadfulWater is a Cherokee ex-cop trying to make a living as a photographer in the small town of Chinook, somewhere in the northwestern United States. But he doesn?t count on snapping shots of a dead body languishing in a newly completed luxury condo resort built by the local Indian band. It?s a mystery that Thumps can?t help getting involved in, especially when he realizes the number one suspect is Stick Merchant, anti-condo protester and wayward son of Claire Merchant, head of the tribal council and DreadfulWater?s sometimes lover. Smart and savvy, blessed with a killer dry wit and a penchant for self-deprecating humour, DreadfulWater just can?t manage to shed his California cop skin. Before long, he is deeply entangled in the mystery and has his work cut out for him.A novel that will appeal to mystery fans as well as Thomas King?s loyal audience, DreadfulWater Shows Up is a catchy, clever read.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Other than a mark on the lower text block, this is a clean, tight and unmarked copy-" From the bestselling author of The Back of the Turtle and The Inconvenient Indian comes a wry and irreverent mysteryThumps DreadfulWater has never liked surprises?even the good ones are annoying. So it?s no shock that a string of seemingly random occurrences is causing Thumps some real discomfort. First Noah Ridge, the Red Power Native activist, arrives in Thumps? sleepy town of Chinook. Then the body of a retired FBI agent turns up at the local Holiday Inn. In the background hovers the ghostly presence of Lucy Kettle, second-in-charge of the Red Power movement, a tough woman in a tough place until her disappearance years ago. Now the sheriff wants Thumps to trade in his photography gig for a temporary cop beat. And it won?t be over, Thumps soon realizes, until everyone?s dead?or famous.Hailed by critics in his first appearance, Cherokee ex-cop Thumps DreadfulWater is back in rumpled but razor-sharp form, doing his laconic, comic best to avoid trouble?and catch the bad guys. Bestselling writer Thomas King has penned a second entertaining DreadfulWater mystery, injected with the author?s characteristic dry wit and biting social commentary.".

"The Back of the Turtle draws on Christian and Native mythology and on King's own unmistakable instinct for mischief to give us a cockeyed Garden of Eden for our times. Showcasing King's brilliant wit and trademark wordplay, this is a funny, smart, sometimes confounding, and altogether unforgettable tale of betrayal, salvation, and the resilience of life". Paperback. Condition: new. Monkman, William Kent (illustrator). Paperback. A retelling of the Christopher Columbus story from a Native point of view turns this tale on its ear!Coyote, the trickster, creates the world and all the creatures in it. She is able to control all events to her advantage until a funny-looking red-haired man named Columbus changes her plans. He is unimpressed by the wealth of moose, turtles and beavers in Coyotes land. Instead he is interested in the human beings he can take to sell in Spain.Thomas King uses a bag of literary tricks to shatter the stereotypes surrounding Columbuss voyages. In doing so, he invites children to laugh with him at the crazy antics of Coyote, who unwittingly allows Columbus to bring about the downfall of her human friends. And he makes the point that history is influenced by the culture of the reporter.Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts:CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.7Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events "A trickster named Coyote rules her world, until a funny-looking stranger named Columbus changes her plans. Unimpressed by the wealth of moose, turtles, and beavers in Coyote's land, he'd rather figure out how to hunt human beings to sell back in Spain"-- Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - An observer could possibly believe that the handsome Colonial Doctor dancing there in London with Lady Jane Pomeroy possibly could be an accomplished swordsman and marksman. No observer could dream that this same big man would in the next several months be a painted savage in the wilderness of the New World! Orphaned as a baby, Thomas Todd McKaye was raised in Carolina by his two Godfathers. The prominent Carolina physician, Doctor Henry Woodward taught Todd his letters and skills as a physician. Atsego, the Susquehannock Indian taught Todd the skills of the forest, the bow, and the hatchet. The Tuscaroras adopted him as a member of the Turtle Clan and called him Tawde. Hotly pursued by the king's men, the young Doctor fled from England back to the New World. He hardly arrived in Philadelphia when he was forced to flee again. This time he disappeared into the wilds of Penn's Woods. There, his adventures began! The first Atotarho, 'He who combs snakes from his hair', made a prediction as he lay on his deathbed. 'There will come a warrior to our people of the Five Nations {Iroquois} who will be one of us and will not be one of us. This warrior will become great among us and you will know him for his name will be that of a weapon!' This is the story of Thomas Todd McKaye, 'The Hatchet' of the Hodenosaunee and how he fulfilled his destiny.
