Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First English Edition (first printing). 8vo. 90pp. Black cloth lettered in silver at the spine. The head of the backstrip gently bruised. Very good indeed in very good non-price-clipped dust wrapper, with several faint but lengthy vertical creases to the front panel. The author's first book, a series of interlinked stories based on his travels in Tibet in 1985. It was originally printed in a February 1987 double issue of the Chinese periodical 'People's Literature', but upon publication deemed an example of bourgeois liberalism and, bafflingly, pornography, and the entire issue was confiscated and destroyed. The editor of the journal was fired and a blanket ban was placed on the future publication of Ma Jian's books (his subsequent works, particularly 'Beijing Coma' and 'The Dark Road', would paint a significantly more savage portrait of the Chinese government than is on view here). This first English edition is enhanced with a new nine-page afterword detailing the denouncement of the book by the Chinese government.

Tens of thousands of students are camped out in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. But what started as a united protest at the slow pace of their government's political reform has begun to lose direction: people from all over China are coming to join the demonstration, but the students at its heart are confused by the influence they suddenly wield, and riven by petty in-fighting. One of them, Dai Wei, argues with about everything from democracy to the distribution of food to protestors, little knowing that, on 4 June, a soldier will shoot a bullet into his head, sending him into a deep coma.As Dai Wei lies immobile in his mother's Beijing flat: his body has become his prison, but his memories offer a means of escape. We watch him fall in love, drop out of school, arrive at university - and become increasingly politicised. From his coma, Dai Wei can't see or move but he can hear what's happening in the world beyond: his mother's struggle to keep him alive; the government's attempt to suppress all memory of the Tiananmen massacre; his friends' involvement in China's frenetic capitalism. As the almost minute-by-minute chronicling of the lead-up to his shooting becomes ever more intense, the reader is caught in a gripping emotional journey where the boundaries between life and death are increasingly blurred. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'I broke a law simply by being born.'In the late 1980s, Shen Yang was born during the fiercest years of China's One-Child Policy. As the second daughter of the family, she was a massive liability - an excess child, a product of illegal birth. From being raised by her grandparents in a remote village as soon as she was born, to being whisked away to her aunt's home in a distant faraway city, Shen Yang's existence was doomed to be shrouded in the utmost secrecy and silence. Armed with a false identity and ID card, she experienced years of neglect and humiliation from her aunt's volatile family who saw her as yet another burden to bear. On top of it all, it seemed her own biological parents had come to forget about her. In a riveting memoir, by turns witty and inspiring, Shen Yang bravely provides a vivid account of the family planning era in China, as she jots down her journey towards overcoming the limits of her upbringing and forging her own identity amidst the sorrows of her childhood. More than One Child is not only Shen Yang's story; it is the untold story of the enormous, yet invisible community of excess-birth children. And this book is Shen Yang's way of saying goodbye to her childhood, and goodbye to an era. 'This is the voice of China's Invisible Generation - vividly written, well balanced, brilliant, humorous and very sharp - it elicits a rollercoaster of emotions that breaks through the silence shrouding the lives of excess children born during the One-Child Policy.' --Xinran (Author of The Good Women of China, and The Promise: Love and Loss in Modern China) 'The One-Child-per-Family policy was a tragedy forced upon China's mothers, children and their families. Finally, in this book, Shen Yang has dared to tell the truth, speaking out bravely about the experiences she lived through.' --Ma Jian (Author of The Dark Road) 'Now that the one-child policy has been relaxed, the stories of these illegal children will soon be a part of China's national collective memory. But to those who grew up tainted with this humiliation, the scars are permanent. One is Chinese writer Shen Yang, who wrote her story in part to extinguish the nightmares that still haunt her.' --Vincent Ni, The Guardian.
