Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Unavailable for more than 70 years, this early but important work is published for the first time with Tolkiens Corrigan poems and other supporting material, including a prefatory note by Christopher Tolkien. Set In Britains land beyond the seas during the Age of Chivalry, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun tells of a childless Breton Lord and Lady (Aotrou and Itroun) and the tragedy that befalls them when Aotrou seeks to remedy their situation with the aid of a magic potion obtained from a corrigan, or malevolent fairy. When the potion succeeds and Itroun bears twins, the corrigan returns seeking her fee, and Aotrou is forced to choose between betraying his marriage and losing his life.Coming from the darker side of J.R.R. Tolkiens imagination, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun, together with the two shorter Corrigan poems that lead up to it and are also included here, was the outcome of a comparatively short but intense period in Tolkiens life when he was deeply engaged with Celtic, and particularly Breton, myth and legend.Written in 1930, this early but seminal work is an important addition to the non-Middle-earth portion of his canon alongside Tolkiens other retellings of myth and legend, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The Fall of Arthur and The Story of Kullervo, a small but important corpus of his ventures into real-world mythologies, each of which would be a formative in uence on his own legendarium. Unavailable for more than 70 years, this early but important work is published for the first time with Tolkien's `Corrigan' poems and other supporting material, including a prefatory note by Christopher Tolkien. Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In Britain's land beyond the seas The wind blows ever through the trees; in Britain's land beyond the waves are stony shores and stony caves. So begins The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun, an early but seminal work that grew, along with the two "Corrigan" poems presented alongside it in this volume, from a comparatively short but intense period in Tolkien's life when he was deeply engaged with Celtic, and particularly Breton, myth and legend. Aotrou and Itroun are a Breton lord and lady residing "in Britain's land beyond the seas" during the mythic age of chivalry. Childless and desperate for an heir, Aotrou seeks out a magic potion from a corrigan, or malevolent fairy. When the potion succeeds, the corrigan returns to demand her fee, and Aotrou is forced to choose between his marriage and his life. Originally written in 1930 and long out of print, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun may be set alongside Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrn, The Fall of Arthur, and The Story of Kullervo. Like these other retellings of myths and legends, it was a powerful influence on Tolkien's own legendarium. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, PEARL, AND SIR ORFEO THREE MEDIEVAL ENGLISH POEMS, WITH TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN It's Christmas at Camelot and King Arthur won't begin to feast until he has witnessed a marvel of chivalry. A mysterious knight, green from head to toe, rides in and brings the court's wait to an end with an implausible challenge to the Round Table: he will allow any of the knights to strike him once, with a battle-axe no less, on the condition that he is allowed to return the blow a year hence. Arthur's brave favorite for the challenge is Sir Gawain. Accompanying Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in this book are Sir Orfeo, a medieval version of the story of Orpheus and Euridice, a love so strong that it overcame death, and Pearl, the moving tale of a man in a graveyard mourning his baby daughter, lost like a pearl that slipped through his fingers. Worn out by grief, he falls asleep and dreams of meeting her in a bejewelled fantasy world. Interpreted in a form designed to appeal to the general reader, J.R.R. Tolkien's vivid translations of these classic poems represent the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the originals. This beautifully decorated text includes as a bonus the complete text of Tolkien's acclaimed lecture on Sir Gawain. "First published in Great Britain by George Allen & Unwin (Publishers) Ltd 1975"--Title page verso. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Pyle, Howard (illustrator). nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - THE STORY OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS - A BOOK THAT INSPIRED TOLKIEN. With original illustrations. THE PROFESSOR'S BOOKSHELF #9:Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, greatly enjoyed Arthurian stories, which he called 'powerful'. In fact, it was he who translated 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' (a 14th-century romance about one of Arthur's knights) into modern English. So profoundly did the legends of King Arthur move Tolkien that a few years before he wrote 'The Hobbit' he began to compose a poem in alliterative verse, entitled 'The Fall of Arthur'. Literary researchers have found several parallels between the Arthurian legends and 'The Lord of the Rings'. In her new introduction, Dart-Thornton discusses these similarities. It was 1903 when Howard Pyle's beautifully illustrated 'The Story of King Arthur and his Knights' was first published. At the time, J.R.R. Tolkien was an eleven year old boy. This new edition is ornamented with the original pictures printed in the first edition - close to 150 gorgeous illustrations. With what relish must young Tolkien have seized upon this new version of the timeless legend, complete with captivating drawings! And how eagerly must that young mind have soaked up the heroic visions that would later help shape Middle-earth in 'The Lord of the Rings'.
