Excerpt: Marc Chagall (English pronunciation: ; Yiddish: ; Belarusian: ;Russian: ; 24 June 1887 (OS)/6 July 1887 (NS) - 28 March 1985), was a Belarusian-French Jewish artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist, and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as 'the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.' According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be 'the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists.' For decades, he 'had also been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist.' Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the United Nations, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra. Before World War I, he traveled between St. Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern Europ. 144 pp. Englisch.

Condition: Good. 22x15 cm. Color photo. Very Good. Alain Cinquini (1941-2021), photographerL'Est Républicain - Nov. 04, 2012: [Article on Alain Cinquini] It all started when he came across Yves Montand, Paul Newman and their respective wives. "I went to ask them to take a picture. Newman didn't want to. Simone Signoret told me that it was good to have asked. Montand understood that I would be there, at the exit of the restaurant, and practically organized a session by showing the mountain to Paul Newman. .Alain Cinquini takes his first photo of stars; that he does not exhibit for several days. It was on the advice of a friend that he finally made contact with the Gamma agency. The beginning of a great career. In a quarter o a century, Alain Cinquini will take between 80,000 and 100,000 shots of the greatest stars, becoming one of the essential independent photographers in the south of France and Monaco. He will maintain privileged relations with stars cinema and artists like Armand or César, among others. In short, an exemplary career during which he will never steal an image and will never violate the privacy of his clients." Quite the opposite of the paparazzi as we understand it today: "I have a way of working, with respect for people, probably because I was brought up that way. Some of my colleagues sometimes wondered how I managed to get certain photos. It was simply because I was seen well, that I was doing my job correctly. And with correction. Having a good reputation, in this environment, it counts, it opens doors.

Levy and J. -L. Basdevant), CERN (M. Jacob), the Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris (J. Diopoulos), the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. Gastmans) and the Universite Catholique de Louvain (J-M. Gerard), which, since 1975, have joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the tenth Summer Institute on High Energy Physics organized jointly at Cargese by these three universities. The 1992 School centered on quantitative tests of the Standard Model for electroweak and strong interactions. First, Professor T. D. Lee reviewed the fascinating history of weak interactions. Professor R. Barbieri then discussed the implications of the of LEP presented by Professor Foil. . Professor G. Ecker latest experimental results described in detail the interplay between electroweak and strong interactions at low energy. Professors K. Berkelman and J-M. Gerard stressed the necessity to study the effects of CP-violation in both B-and K-physics. The first results of the HERA machine were presented by Professor G. Wolf, while Professor M. Shochet reviewed heavy flavor physics in hadron collider experiments. Recent non-accelerator experiments in neutrino physics were presented by Professor B. Barish. Finally, Professor M. Turner reviewed Cosmology after COBE. We owe many thanks to all those who have made this Summer Institute possible! Special thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of NATO and its President for a generous grant. 448 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book collects interrelated lectures on fractal dynamics, anomalous transport and various historical and modern aspects of plasma sciences and technology. The origins of plasma science in connection to electricity and electric charges and devices leading to arc plasma are explored in the first contribution by Jean-Marc Ginoux and Thomas Cuff. The second important historic connection with plasmas was magnetism and the magnetron. Victor J. Law and Denis P. Dowling, in the second contribution, review the history of the magnetron based on the development of thermionic diode valves and related devices. In the third chapter, Christos H Skiadas and Charilaos Skiadas present and apply diffusion theory and solution strategies to a number of stochastic processes of interest. Anomalous diffusion by the fractional Fokker-Planck equation and Lévy stable processes are studied by Johan Anderson and Sara Moradi in the fourth contribution. They consider the motion of charged particles in a 3-dimensional magnetic field in the presence of linear friction and of a stochastic electric field. Analysis of low-frequency instabilities in a low-temperature magnetized plasma is presented by Dan-Gheorghe Dimitriu, Maricel Agop in the fifth chapter. The authors refer to experimental results of the Innsbruck Q-machine and provide an analytical formulation of the related theory. In chapter six, Stefan Irimiciuc, Dan-Gheorghe Dimitriu, Maricel Agop propose a theoretical model to explain the dynamics of charged particles in a plasma discharge with a strong flux of electrons from one plasma structure to another. The theory and applications of fractional derivatives in many-particle disordered large systems are explored by Z.Z. Alisultanov, A.M. Agalarov, A.A. Potapov, G.B. Ragimkhanov. In chapter eight, Maricel Agop, Alina Gavrilut and Gabriel Crumpei explore the motion of physical systems that take place on continuous but non-differentiable curves (fractal curves). Finally in the last chapter S.L. Cherkas and V.L. Kalashnikov consider the perturbations of a plasma consisting of photons, baryons, and electrons in a linearly expanding (Milne-like) universe taking into account the metric tensor and vacuum perturbations. 216 pp. Englisch.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. This book was previously owned by the renowned sociologist, Daniel Bell. Bell was a student of M.I. Finley's at City College. He changed his major under the influence of Finley. They later became good friends. Inside this book was a long typed and signed letter from Finley to Bell, dated 16 August 1961. He mostly writes about dogs and food. Just kidding. It's pretty heady stuff. Seems as though Bell may have sought his help with regard to something he was working on. Here is a sense of the letter from the first of five paragraphs: 'Dear Dan, I know it sounds improbable, but the absence of an ideology or counter-ideology of labour in classical antiquity becomes more and more noticeable the more one looks for it. 'Fate' is of course always available as an explanation, but is that an ideology in the sense in which the expulsion from Eden or the doctrine of a calling was? I should think not. It really is true that the Greek language reflects the absence of a general idea of labour. This was first brought sharply home to me by the Vernant articles I cite.' He ends the letter writing 'I don't know how much this helps you, and someday I want myself to spend more time on the question. But that is about how it stands at the moment in my mind, and in the literature as far as I know. Yours sincerely, M. Finley.' The other side of this air mail letter shows the Columbia University address of Professor Bell and the Jesus College, Cambridge, England address of Professor Finley. There's also the imprint of a stamp with the image of a young Queen Elizabeth who would later bestow the honor of knighthood upon Moses Israel Finley. A signed letter from Professor Finley is quite rare. I haven't found another on the Internet. Professor Bell had also placed a letter he received from the editor-in-chief at Viking Press, Elizabeth Sifton, 20 years and 10 days from the time he received the earlier letter. It reads 'Dear Professor Bell: 'Here is another book of Moses Finley's, which Viking is scheduled for publication in the early winter of 1982. Moses and I both thought you ought to see the early proofs, which I hope will meet with your approval. With all good wishes, yours sincerely, Elizabeth Sifton.' I'm not sure which of Professor Finley's books she was referring to. He published several around that time. Professor Bell was teaching at Harvard at the time. Both letters that were inside this book are a part of the sale, the largest part of this sale is, of course, the first letter. Inside the book there is also a slip of paper with a few, short, penned remarks from Daniel Bell with regard to Slavery In Classical Antiquity. The essays in the book are written by A. H. M. Jones, W. L. Westermann, Joseph Vogt, M. I. Finley (Was Greek Civilization Based on Slave Labour?), Robert Schlaifer, Gregory the Vlastos, Henri Levy-Bruhl, M. L. Gordon, E. A. Thompson, and Marc Bloch. The book is in solid shape. The covers have some toning. There's also a very small loss at the top edge of the spine and a 1" clean tear off the front bottom edge just adjacent to the spine. Covers and pages are all solidly bound. The pages are exceptionally clean. There's a small, light top corner crease on a number of later pages, probably from a light bump. Dr. Bell penned a few parenthetical lines on two pages. There's no other writing. No markings or attachments. 'Sir Moses Israel Finley was an American-born British academic and classical scholar. His prosecution by the United States Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security during the 1950s, resulted in his relocation to England, where he became an English classical scholar and eventually master of Darwin College, Cambridge. His most notable publication was The Ancient Economy in which he argued that the economy in antiquity was governed by status and civic ideology, rather than rational economic motivations. Finley graduated magna cum laude at the age of 15 from Syracuse University. He later attended Columbia University.'.
