Wraps. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. 80, [2] pages. Illustrations (most in color). Map. Cover has slight wear and soiling, and minor sticker residue at back. The Reverend Dr. William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin (June 18, 1869 - September 7, 1939) (or W.A.R. Goodwin as he preferred or "the Doctor" as commonly used to his annoyance) was an Episcopal priest, historian, and author. As the rector of Bruton Parish Church, Goodwin began the 20th century preservation and restoration effort which resulted in Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. He is thus sometimes called "the Father of the Restoration of Colonial Williamsburg." Dr. Goodwin used his contacts in New York and Philadelphia to revitalize the town as well as college. In particular, he convinced John D. Rockefeller Jr.(the wealthy son of the founder of Standard Oil) and his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, to help restore in the historic town, and stimulated their generosity which financed its restoration and reuse as a living history museum. Together, the local team and the New York-based Rockefellers made Dr. Goodwin's dream of restoring the old colonial capital come true, creating what grew to become Colonial Williamsburg. A public announcement finally revealed the Rockefellers' role at two town meetings in the historic city held in June 1928. This book tells the fascinating story of how the Reverend W. A. R. Goodwin and John D. Rockefeller, Jr., went about restoring Virginia's colonial capital in the midst of the Great Depression. Equally engrossing is the account of how the Williamsburg that guests see today was transformed from a sleepy southern town into a city alive with the voices of history. Colonial Williamsburg is a living-history museum and private foundation presenting part of a historic district in the city of Williamsburg, Virginia, United States. Colonial Williamsburg's 301-acre (122 ha) Historic Area includes buildings from the eighteenth century (during part of which the city was the capital of Colonial Virginia), as well as 17th-century, 19th-century, Colonial Revival structures and more recent reconstructions. The Historic Area is an interpretation of a colonial American city, with exhibits of dozens of restored or re-created buildings related to its colonial and American Revolutionary War history.[citation needed] Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area's combination of restoration and re-creation of parts of the colonial town's three main thoroughfares and their connecting side streets attempts to suggest the atmosphere and the circumstances of 18th-century Americans. Colonial Williamsburg's motto has been "That the future may learn from the past".In the late 1920s, the restoration and re-creation of colonial Williamsburg was championed by the Reverend Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, other community leaders, such organizations as the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (now called Preservation Virginia), the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Chamber of Commerce as well as the scion of the Rockefeller family, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, to celebrate rebel patriots and the early history of the United States. One of the largest history projects in the nation and a tourist attraction, it is part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, which includes Jamestown and Yorktown, linked by the Colonial Parkway. The site was once used for conferences by world leaders and heads of state, including U.S. presidents. It was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1960. Costumed employees work and dress as people did in the era, sometimes using colonial grammar and diction (although not colonial accents). Prominent buildings include the Raleigh Tavern, the Capitol, the Governor's Palace (all reconstructed), as well as the Courthouse, the George Wythe House, the Peyton Randolph House, the Magazine, and independently owned and functioning Bruton Parish Church (all originals). Colonial Williamsburg's portion of the Historic Area beg.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'Joe Otto, a friend and dedicated layman, has written a remarkable and engaging book. It is remarkable for the range of theology that he covers in so short a space. It is all the more remarkable in that these are topics about which theologians write great tomes and about which they argue with one another today. Best of all is his strong presentation of the centrality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a real event which took place in Jesus in 30 A.D. in the outskirts of Jerusalem, with amazing implications for understanding the whole of Scripture and for our lives in Christ today. Pick up and read.' Rt. Rev. John H. Rodgers Jr., Th.D. Dean/President Emeritus Trinity School for Ministry, Retired Bishop AMIA 'Joe Otto blessed the church where I served by teaching a series on stewardship. Now he has used his legal mind to lead us to make a decision to follow Jesus. He makes a concise case largely rooted in the unique truth of Christ's resurrection. Just as Abraham experienced the 'resurrection' of Isaac when God provided the ram in the thicket, Joe leads us to find new life when he helps us see the truth of the Lamb of God rising from the dead.' My poor wife was attacked before him though not so severely as to cause alarm for her life, but. it will still require time to restore her perfectly. My second son also hardly escaped an attack, and was, and is perhaps weak, from the violent preventives necessary - of course immediately it could be done, we were ordered to remove. We have been three weeks at Richmond, and are now at Pinner - from both which places I run up in a very short time for business or duty - I am always here on Sundays. One of my smaller grievances (smaller they must be allowed to be after the harassing and painful weeks, which I have passed) is that I cannot see such friends as you during your very infrequent and brief visits to London. Where are you and how long do you stay? Is Mrs Townshend with you? You left no direction - I therefore take my chance of sending this to Mr Mainwairing. If you are staying in town do let me know - it will be shortest to direct to my brother 'The Grove, Pinner'. as I do not know what day I may be in town. My wife and Archy will not, I think, return to town (I am dissuaded by the doctor) before our usual holidays. Born into an ecclesiastical family in 1852, Jervois Arthur Newnham came to Canada as a young man and graduated from the Montreal Diocesan College and McGill University in 1878. After being ordained as an Anglican minister, he became curate at Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal. He was Bishop of Moosonee from 1893 to 1903 and of Saskatchewan from 1904 to 1921. He travelled extensively on foot, by canoe or by snowshoe throughout his dioceses, often with the native people. Retiring as a bishop in 1921, he returned to England and became rector in Clifton, Bedfordshire before returning to Hamilton, Ontario where he died January 12, 1941. The first leaf of Newnham's album has photos of Lettie Henderson, who married him in 1892, and Grove Corsham, his father's rectory in Bath, England. The ship Lady Head, the transportation that took the Newnhams to their remote missionary post at Moose Fort/Factory, is also pasted to the first page. The majority of the photos in the album were taken at or near Moose Factory. Interesting photos include Isaiah Squirrel (a converted "Indian" in training for catachism), the five daughters of Bishop Newnham, Rupert's House Indian School students, Indian camps, a dog team, showshoeing in the bush, and other clergymen. The photos of Indigenous people may assist in documenting their lives, cultures, and relations with the Anglican church and settlers.

Emily Trevenen, 1784-1856, lived nearly all her life in Cornwall; she was the only child of the Reverend Thomas Trevenen and Cordelia Grylls, her father being vicar of Cardinham. Her closest early friend was her cousin, Elizabeth, who died in 1833 at the age of 33. Emily wrote and published Notes and Letters of Elizabeth Farquharson Trevenen. Emily's mother died in 1812 & her father in 1816. In 1817 Emily travelled with two unmarried female relations 1,100 miles around Britain, spending much time in the Lake District and Scotland. She kept a journal, Meditations and Reflections. The manuscript, given to Mary Coleridge and now at Texas, show her 'to have been well-read and, for a daughter of her era, well-educated woman of wide interests whose judgements. show considerable sensibility, insight and acuity.' After nursing two aunts at Bristol, Emily settled at No. 1, Cross Street, Helston, Cornwall for the rest of her life. Her most important friendship began when the Reverend Derwent Coleridge, son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, with his wife Mary, arrived in Helston as Headmaster of the Grammar School. Emily became godmother to their son, Derwent Moultrie, and wrote for him Little Derwent's Breakfast, which was first published in 1839. The close friendship between Emily and the Coleridges extended quickly to include Derwent's sister, Sara Coleridge, and when Sara married in the Lake District in 1829, Emily attended. Derwent and Mary accompanied Emily only as far as Plymouth. On the way, Emily stayed with her cousin Mary & her husband Thomas Arnold, at Rugby, and visited Charles Kingsley's father, rector at Barnack, near Peterborough. After a three-month journey Emily arrived for Sara's marriage at Keswick to her cousin Henry Nelson Coleridge on 3rd September, the ceremony conducted by William Wordsworth's son, John. After the Coleridges left Helston for London in 1841, when Derwent was appointed principal of the first Church training college for schoolmasters at St. Mark's, Chelsea, Emily remained in regular contact with Mary; in 1855 she instructed her solicitor to pay the Coleridges £100 per annum, and any expense involved in visiting Emily at Helston. Emily Trevenen died at the age of 71, bequeathing an annual Exhibition to enable a Helston Grammar School pupil to attend Oxford or Cambridge. There is still a 'Trevenen House' at the school. Cornell University holds 'The Emily Trevenen Album' dated 1829, with contributions by S.T. and Sara Coleridge, Robert Southey, the Wordsworths. The papers of Mary Pridman Coleridge, 1807-87, wife of Derwent Coleridge are in the Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Texas.
