Setting off in 1740, during England's War with Spain, with a squadron of 6 ships, Anson returned four years later after a voyage in which 74% of his crew died from disease or starvation, one ship was wrecked in the attempt to round Cape Horn in appalling weather, and two others turned back. How he persevered and wrenched success from near disaster, is one of the great stories of British Naval History.

[xi], 438 [2] pp. Octavo, 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches tall. This volume summarizes recent developments in our understanding of active galactic nuclei, including quasars, seyfert galaxies and radio galaxies. The predominant emphasis is put on observational results with information from essentially all wave bands, but important theoretical results are also presented. Among the contributions are discussions of the different types of active galaxies, the nature of the central engine, the wiggly structure of radio jets, the dynamics of the gas in jets, the study of millimeter and extreme ultraviolet regions, and a discussion of the observed continuum of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The intended readers are professional astronomers and astrophysicists as well as graduate students in this field of research. - Publisher's web siteEmission-line spectra and the nature of active galactic nuclei, Donald E. • xxviii, 324, [ii] p, contemporary dark blue paper-covered boards, spine with blue morocco label with gilt title, and gilt lines. An early work on plant-insect symbiosis. The second half of this book contains a systematic account of plants, which serve as food for the various species of insects. It refers often to Linnaeus, Leeuwenhoek, Reaumur, Bonnet, Duhamel de Monceau, etc. Pritzel and Horn-Schenkling wrongly quote one plate, this copy, however, is complete. Endpapers a bit spotted; fore-edges of boards much rubbed. A very good copy. Rather rare. Horn-Schenkling, 2440; Pritzel, 1142.

About 1627 or 1788, the cattle of Herefordshire England began to be noticed for the special characteristics of their breed. In this latter year, William Marshall, an agricultural commentator, had this to say: `so perfectly resembling the breed of Herefordshire in frame, colour and horn, as not to be distinguishable from that celebrated breed, except in the greater cleanness of the heads and fore-quarters, and except in the inferiority of size. ' Famous foundation herds such as those of John Duncumb, Thomas Andrew Knight, Benjamin Tomkins, and William Galliers are also discussed. Overseas trends for the breed are noted for Australia, Africa, the United States, and Canada - but particularly for Argentina and Uruguay. 501 pages including INDEX.
