  • This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "In the Garb of Peace" appeared thus in the Punch's Almanack for 1911. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "Certain gentlemen of ordinarily homicidal tendencies (in a political sense) who under the chastening influence of a 'Conference' have been endeavouring to seem at home in the above unwonted costume."Throughout 1910-11 the Commons battled over curbing the power of the House of Lords. Prime Minister Asquith agreed, after King George V insisted, that there be a Constitutional conference between the two parties to attempt to resolve the issues amicably. They first met in June 1910. By November it was clear that no agreement could be reached. The King met frequently with Asquith and attempted to keep the situation somewhat calm, but to no avail. This cartoon depicts prominent MPs, some of whom were present at the conference. Left to right are Balfour, Asquith, Redmond, Grey, Haldane, Lloyd George, and Churchill. All had been vocal on the issues. At this time, under the influence of a conference, they are dressed in Roman togas, carrying doves and seeking peace. It didn't last.As a young man, the Harrow-educated cartoonist and caricaturist Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933) "spent time at the House of Commons sketching politicians in action." In March 1890 he became a permanent member of the staff of Punch and by 1894 became the illustrator of Punch s parliamentary pages, a post he held for eighteen years. As this cartoon of Churchill testifies, Reed "had a deft hand at sketching facial attributes amidst often absurd scenes."(NPG) Reed was popular, not only as a cartoonist, but also as an after-dinner speaker and lecturer. His drawings were published in collections, displayed at exhibitions, and even purchased by King George V. In 1912, Reed left the staff of Punch and subsequently also drew for The Bystander, the Passing Show, the Sunday Times, Pall Mall Gazette, Sunday Evening Telegraph, and the Evening Standard. (ODNB)Punch or The London Charivari began featuring Churchill cartoons in 1900, when his political career was just beginning. That political career would last two thirds of a century, see him occupy Cabinet office during each of the first six decades of the twentieth century, carry him twice to the premiership and, further still, into the annals of history as a preeminent statesman. And throughout that time, Punch satirized Churchill in cartoons more than 600 of them, the work of more than 50 different artists. It was a near-perfect relationship between satirists and subject. That Churchill was distinctive in both persona and physical appearance helped make him easy to caricature. To his persona and appearance he added myriad additional satirical temptations, not just props, like his cigars, siren suits, V-sign, and hats, but also a variety of ancillary avocations and vocations, like polo, painting, brick-laying, and writing. All these were skewered as well. Some Punch cartoons were laudatory, some critical, and many humorous, like the man himself. Nearly always, Churchill was distinctly recognizable, a larger-than-life character whose presence caricature served only to magnify.

Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "'Judging Character By Correspondence': Or, The Winston Touch" appeared thus on p.283 of the 21 April 1909 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "'Churchill: I agree with Grayson - if our elders presume on our reverence and admiration for their splendid careers to check criticism and exact obedience, there are a few of us, I think, (I know one!) not constructed along those lines!; Just my sentiments to a T!! Our artist has curiously few opportunities of attending Cabinet councils, but, after a careful study of Mr. Winston Churchill's letter to his constituents about the '8' (dreadnoughts) question, in which he light-heartedly castigates every axiom and argument of his dear colleagues, he feels sure the above can be no inaccurate representation of what usually occurs when the cabinet meets in council."Churchill was opposed to building eight Dreadnoughts (battleships) and sent letters to his constituents to that effect, undermining the positions of his colleagues, much to their chagrin. Reed provides an image of how he imagined Churchill was seen by his colleagues, including Asquith, Grey, and McKenna, in cabinet meetings. Of note, two years later Churchill would become the civilian head of the British Navy as First Lord of the Admiralty. As a young man, the Harrow-educated cartoonist and caricaturist Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933) "spent time at the House of Commons sketching politicians in action." In March 1890 he became a permanent member of the staff of Punch and by 1894 became the illustrator of Punch s parliamentary pages, a post he held for eighteen years. This cartoon titled "The Government are in Fighting Trim" appeared thus in the Punch's Almanack for 1910. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "'The Government are in fighting Trim' (Ministerial Speech). With the Artist's heartfelt congratulations to those other gallant warriors who, from exigencies of space, have escaped inclusion in the above battle-picture."The image shows Prime Minister Herbert Asquith's cabinet (left to right) with Churchill, Lloyd George, Asquith, Grey, Morley, Haldane, Runciman, and McKenna ready to fight the battles in the House but it is Churchill and Lloyd George dressed as the swashbuckling pirates who lead the charge. As a young man, the Harrow-educated cartoonist and caricaturist Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933) "spent time at the House of Commons sketching politicians in action." • Seller image for De mortuis nil nisi bona: being a series of problems in executorship law and accounts . With a foreword in the Latin tongue by D.F. de l'Hoste Ranking . Illustrated by E.T. Reed. for sale by Jason Burley, Camden Lock Books, ABA, ILAB & IOBA

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Decorated red & black half title page. Title printed in red & black. 102 printed pages. 20 duotone plates. Top edges gilt. Foredge uncut. Endpapers in grey, with neat ownership stamps (one on front free endpaper, the other on the rear free endpaper) for "L.B. Goldstein. 92 Brick Lane, London E.1. Chartered Accountants". Red greek revival style head and tail pieces. 15.5 x 23 cm. Original grey cloth. Gilt lettering along spine, somewhat age-toned. Upper cover with gilt lettering on blue cloth panel with embossed gilt border. Bevelled edges. Covers richly patinated with handling. Highly amusing but technically exacting problems of inheritance taxation in 30 various situations, from a Justice of the Peace with a wooden leg, a Pig breeder whose prize sow died shortly after her owner, a man dying from a dog bite and a Curate marrying an heiress. Serious educational & accountancy problems but with a funny and memorable twist in each case. Reed (1860-1933) had been cartoonist for "Punch" for 23 years until 1912. From 1914 he was wearing himself and his pencil out in his country's service ("I was working simultaneously for the "Bystander", the "Passing Show", the "Sunday Times", "Pall Mall Gazette, "Sunday Evening Telegram", the "Evening Standard" and possibly one or two more"). Reed contributed 20 fantastically strong original drawings to this book of law & accountancy, even though he was so bad at personal finances that he once had the pleasure of getting his own back on Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, sending him a slightly mocking "Final Demand" for an unpaid cartoon drawing of the Chancellor. In the mid 1920's, Reed passed into illness & decline and lost his hard-made fortune on medical costs- no need to trouble the Exchequer with Inheritance Tax on his account, ironically. He said in his incomplete autobiography "Had I had the least business instinct I should now have been driving about in the latest model Bentley (and smoking a cigar like Lord Lonsdale's) instead of barking my shins and clinging to the handrail and to the simple faith in the power of a General omnibus to get through the traffic". WorldCat locates just one single copy at the British Library. This is a scarce book & appeals to caricature collector accountants, lawyers & humourists.

Oblong 8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 in. 20 pp. With several colour-tinted plates of shotguns & rifles. Light-gray printed softcovers, cover art lettering & borders in green, Fine copy, w/ printed price list on lightly tinted laid "ClassicFold" paper w/ watermark, 1 price changed from £10 to £5. First edition of this exceedingly scarce Jazz Age gun and shotgun catalogue issued by prestigious firm of James Woodward & Sons, considered by many as having built the finest guns of all time. The price list included with these superbly manufactured guns ranged from base Hammerless Ejector Single-Barrel Special Trap Guns at £100 ($ 15,000 in 2023) to £150 ($ 25,000 in 2023) Hammerless 12-20 gauge "Under and Over" Ejector Double Guns, which could also be fitted with 22-ct. gold plates in the stock and engraved, and additional silver anti-recoil pad. The catalogue also makes special note of the growing interest of women in sport shooting, by offering a special "Ladies' Gun" a 16-bore "Under and Over" ideally suited with less recoil. The Woodward "Over & Under" gun is still considered one of the best ever developed, and was later adopted by Purdey when they acquired Woodward & Sons in 1948. Although James Woodward originally apprenticed to the trade with Charles Moore around 1827, and eventually established the firm at 64 St. James's St., Pall Mall in 1844, the firm continually claimed in their trade literature, advertising, and promotions that they had been founded originally in 1800, possibly referring to the business Charles Moore himself had purchased around 1800. Although difficult to date accurately as the catalogues were infrequent and intended for a select clientele, with last specific date of 1918 internally here, the firm did move the business later to 29 Bury St. in 1937. No copies in Worldcat.

  • Not only an unusually intimate letter for a member of royalty to write, but also an interesting communication from a poet to her mentor. On Ulbach s death the Pall Mall Gazette (20 April 1889) referred to Elisabeth as the poet-Queen of Roumania , stating that it was to Ulbach whom she owed the publication of the "Pensées d une Reine" Some years ago Ulbach was travelling in Roumania, and was presented to the Queen at her summer residence at Sinaia. Perusal of the queen s album of her writing in French so delighted Ulbach that he induced the Queen to allow a selection to be made from its contents and published at Paris, under the title of "Pensees d une Reine." The present item is 8pp, landscape 12mo. On two bifoliums of grey paper, each with a large printed facsimile of the queen s signature Elisabeth at top left of the first page. In good condition, lightly aged. A long letter of closely-written text, in French, addressed to Mon cher Monsieur Ulbach and signed Elisabeth . Having received un petit chef-d oeuvre from him, she begins with a mannered apology for her silence, declaring that she will never forget toute la peine que vous vous êtes donnée pour moi! Monsieur Urechia has asked her to write a book pour nos écoles and she has found rien de mieux à faire que d inventer des légendes sur les montagnes de Sinaia . She has been horriblement bouleversée by the news of the death of la soeur de ma cousine , i.e. Princess Marie of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1857-1882), morte en couches hier matin. Elle était belle comme le jour, respirant la vie et la joie . A few weeks before she had thought that her own life was at an end, et voilà que ma petite soeur doit s enaller à ma place, dans la plénitude de sa force et de sa jeunesse! She continues: Vous savez que dès que je n ai plus été aveuglée par les douleurs, je me suis plongée dans vos livres! - Mes favoris restent toujours Moline Fernel et le Comte Orphée! She praises his writing at some length, and in particular his understanding of women. Ah! quels beaux enfants on pourrait avoir, si l on savait certaines choses ou si l on y pensait! Mais nous sommes des ignorants et des étourdis et nous compromettons l avenir pour nous étormer ensuite. She wishes he could visit Sinaia again, so that she could have a talk with him: Je vous trouverai un endroit pour écrire, où rien ne vous dérangera! Et nous causerons! After more praise for his writing she ends: Je vous remercie encore et encore pour tout ce que vous avez fait pour moi! See Image.
