Soft cover. A new book that is clean tight with some marks and notes on A numer of pages. Staging Race casts a spotlight on the generation of black artists who came of age between 1890 and World War I in an era of Jim Crow segregation and heightened racial tensions. As public entertainment expanded through vaudeville, minstrel shows, and world's fairs, black performers, like the stage duo of Bert Williams and George Walker, used the conventions of blackface to appear in front of, and appeal to, white audiences. At the same time, they communicated a leitmotif of black cultural humor and political comment to the black audiences segregated in balcony seats. With ingenuity and innovation, they enacted racial stereotypes onstage while hoping to unmask the fictions that upheld them offstage.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A PITCHFORK MUSIC BOOK OF THE YEAR'Tongson serves up a number of astute observations about fantasy, projection, longing, normalcy, and aberrance.' - MAGGIE NELSON'Deftly weaves memoir, history, and cultural criticism to highlight the dynamic relationship between artists and listeners.' - PITCHFORKIn the '60s and '70s, America's music scene was marked by raucous excess, reflected in the tragic overdoses of young superstars such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. At the same time, the uplifting harmonies and sunny lyrics that propelled Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard, to international fame belied a different sort of tragedy - the underconsumption that led to Karen's death at age thirty-two from the effects of an eating disorder. In Why Karen Carpenter Matters, Karen Tongson (whose parents named her after the pop icon) interweaves the story of the singer's rise to fame in the 1960s and '70s with her own trans-Pacific journey between the Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Karen Carpenter's home ground of Southern California. Tongson reveals why the Carpenters' chart-topping, seemingly white-washed musical fantasies of 'normal love' have profound significance for her - as well as for other people of colour, LGBT+ communities, and anyone outside the mainstream culture usually associated with Karen Carpenter's legacy. This hybrid of memoir and biography excavates the destructive perfectionism at the root of the Carpenters' sound, while finding the beauty in the singer's all-too-brief life. A radical, literary and intimate insight into one of the twentieth century's most vital vocalists. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'Why am I not white like everybody else?' Nan came and sat on the edge of my bed. 'What do you mean?' A tender finger brushed against my cheek. 'Well, everyone in this house is white. Why am I Black?' A generation of Nigerian children were born in Britain in the fifties and sixties, privately fostered by white families, then taken to Nigeria by their parents. Coconut is the story of one of those children. 1963, North London. Nan fosters one-year-old Florence Olajide and calls her 'Ann.' Florence adores her foster mother more than anything but Nan, and the children around her, all have white skin and she can't help but feel different. Then, four years later, after a weekend visit to her birth parents, Florence never returns to Nan. Two months after, sandwiched between her mother and father plus her three siblings, six-year-old Florence steps off a ship in Lagos to the fierce heat of the African sun. Swapping the lovely, comfortable bed in her room at Nan's for a mat on the floor of the living room in her new home, Florence finds herself struggling to adjust. She wants to embrace her cultural heritage but doesn't speak Yoruba and knows nothing of the customs. Clashes with her grandmother, Mama, the matriarch of the family, result in frequent beatings. Torn between her early childhood experiences and the expectations of her African culture, she begins to question who she is. Nigerian, British, both? Florence's story is an unputdownable tale of loss and loneliness, surviving poverty, maltreatment and fighting to get an education. Most of all, it's a moving, uplifting and inspiring account of one woman's self-determination to discover who she is and find her way to a place she can call home. In lyrical and evocative prose, the New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels takes the scattered pieces of a life and weaves them into a tale of hope.Caroline Collier is a woman bogged down in the harsh realities of a life barely lived. Stress from her all-consuming job as an accountant has given her panic attacks, forcing her to take a leave of absence from work. And though her chances of relaxing in the presence of her overbearing, perfect mother are slim, she joins her at the family's vacation home in the mountains of North Carolina.Though Caroline loves the serene beauty of Lake Ophelia, peace of mind is not to be found. Memories of her beloved younger brother, who died when she was seventeen, continue to haunt her, while the tension between her mother and her still simmers. Only their neighbors, the husband and daughter of one of Caroline's childhood friends, seem able to penetrate her cool reserve, giving Caroline the courage to face her biggest fears-and dive headfirst into life. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Happy Valley was the name given to the Wanjohi Valley in the Kenya Highlands, where a small community of affluent, hedonistic white expatriates settled between the wars. While Kenya's early colonial days have been immortalised by farming pioneers like Lord Delamere and Karen Blixen, and the pioneering aviator Beryl Markham, Happy Valley became infamous under the influence of troubled socialite, Lady Idina Sackville, whose life was told in Frances Osborne's bestselling The Bolter. The era culminated with the notorious murder of the Earl of Erroll in 1941, the investigation of which laid bare the Happy Valley set's decadence and irresponsibility, chronicled in another bestseller, James Fox's White Mischief. But what is left now?In a remarkable and indefatigable archaeological quest, Juliet Barnes, who has lived in Kenya all her life and whose grandparents knew some of the Happy Valley characters, has set out to explore Happy Valley to find the former homes and haunts of this extraordinary and transient set of people. With the help of a remarkable African guide and further assisted by the memories of elderly former settlers, she finds the remains of grand residences tucked away beneath the mountains and speaks to local elders who share first-hand memories of these bygone times. Nowadays these old homes, she discovers, have become tumbledown dwellings for many African families, school buildings, or their ruins have almost disappeared without trace - a revelation of the state of modern Africa that makes the gilded era of the Happy Valley set even more fantastic.A book to set alongside such singular evocations of Africa's strange colonial history as The Africa House, The Ghosts of Happy Valley is a mesmerising blend of travel narrative, social history and personal quest. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Friendship, loyalty, and love lie at the heart of this beautifully written, poignant, and sweeping novel of five women who, over the course of four decades, come to redefine what it means to be family. This generous and inventive book is a delight to read, an evocation of the power of friendship to sustain, encourage, and embolden us. Join the sisterhood!Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book ClubFor thirty-five years, Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally have met every Wednesday at the park near their homes in Palo Alto, California. Defined when they first meet by what their husbands do, the young homemakers and mothers are far removed from the Summer of Love that has enveloped most of the Bay Area in 1967. These Wednesday Sisters seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, brutally blunt Linda is a remarkable athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, quiet Ally has a secret, and quirky, ultra-intelligent Brett wears little white gloves with her miniskirts. But they are bonded by a shared love of both literatureFitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickensand the Miss America Pageant, which they watch together every year. As the years roll on and their children grow, the quintet forms a writers circle to express their hopes and dreams through poems, stories, and, eventually, books. Along the way, they experience history in the making: Vietnam, the race for the moon, and a womens movement that challenges everything they have ever thought about themselves, while at the same time supporting one another through changes in their personal lives brought on by infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success. Humorous and moving, The Wednesday Sisters is a literary feast for book lovers that earns a place among those popular works that honor the joyful, mysterious, unbreakable bonds between friends. Friendship, loyalty, and love lie at the heart of Clayton's beautifully written, poignant, and sweeping novel of five women who, over the course of four decades, come to redefine what it means to be family. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWSA candid, generous, and profound spiritual memoir that deserves a great deal of thoughtful discussion.Anne Rice At seventeen, Mary Johnson experienced her calling when she saw a photo of Mother Teresa on the cover of Time magazine; eighteen months later she began her training as a Missionary of Charity, a nun in Mother Teresas order. Not without difficulty, this boisterous, independent-minded teenager eventually adapted to the sisters austere life of poverty and devotion, but beneath the white-and-blue sari beat the heart of an ordinary young woman who faced daily the simple and profound struggles we all share, the same desires for love and connection. Eventually, after twenty years of service, Johnson left the church to find her own path, but her magnificently told story holds universal truths about the mysteries of faith and how a woman discovers herself. Includes new material: Two reading group guidesfor groups that wish to take different approaches to the book; a conversation between Mary Johnson and Mira Bartok, author of The Memory Palace; and Mary Johnsons recommended reading list A wonderful achievement . . . Johnson opens the window on a horizon of spiritual questions [and] takes an unflinching look inside her own heart. The Christian Science Monitor An incredible coming-of-age story . . . [It] has everything a memoir needs: an inside look at a way of life that most of us will never see, a physical and emotional journey, and suspense.Slate Reads like a novel . . . an exacting account of a woman growing into her own soul.More magazine Engaging, heartfelt and entertaining . . . [Johnson] articulates her struggles with her God in words that will hit home.Los Angeles Times An inspiration that transcends any particular religious belief . . . An Unquenchable Thirst is a journey that captivates, but its resonance lies in the life examined. The Denver Post For readers of Karen Armstrong and Kathleen Norris comes a powerful, unforgettable spiritual autobiography of Johnson's 20 years working alongside Mother Teresa in service to the world's poor--and a fascinating depiction of the daily struggle to live a life of religious service. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. It was on a Malibu beach in 1988 that Peter Lindbergh shot the White Shirts series, images now known the world over. Simple yet seminal, the photographs introduced us to Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz, and Estelle Lefebure. This marked the beginning of an era that redefined beauty, and Lindbergh would go on to alter the landscape of fashion photography for the decades that followed. This edition gathers more than 300 images from forty years of Lindbergh's career. It traces the German photographer's cinematic inflections and humanist approach, which produced images at once seductive and introspective. In 1980 Rei Kawakubo asked Lindbergh to shoot a Commes des Garcons campaign, one of his earlier forays into commercial photography. Kawakubo gave him carte blanche. The following years brought forth collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion and resulted in a relationship of mutual reverence; Lindbergh's respect for some of the greatest designers of our time is palpable in his portraits. Among those photographed are Azzedine Alaia, Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, and Yohji Yamamoto.Widely considered a pioneer in his field, Lindbergh shirked the industry standards of beauty and instead celebrated the essence and individuality of his subjects. He was pivotal to the rise of models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Mariacarla Boscono, Lara Stone, Claudia Schiffer, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Kristen McMenamy.Lindbergh's reach also extended across Hollywood and beyond: Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Richard Gere, Isabelle Huppert, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau all appear in his works. From the picture chosen by Anna Wintour as the cover of her first Vogue issue to the legendary shot of Tina Turner on the Eiffel Tower, it is never the clothes, celebrity, or glamour that takes center stage in a Lindbergh photograph. Each picture conveys the humanity of its subject with a serene melancholy that is uniquely and unmistakably Lindbergh. From the outset of his career, Lindbergh was well-known in the contemporary art world, where his photographs were exhibited in galleries long before they appeared in magazines. This edition features an updated introduction adapted from an interview in 2016, allowing a glimpse behind Lindbergh's lens, where the photographer recounts his early collaborations, the tenuous relationship between commercial and fine art, and the power of storytelling. Peter Lindbergh's seminal compendium, now published in a special anniversary edition. Through collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion, Lindbergh created new narratives with his humanist approach. This book features more than 300 images, many previously unpublished, and an adapted interview with Lindbergh. Paperback. Condition: Good. 342 pages. Spine faded The aerial attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, a global spectacle of unprecedented dime nsions, generated an enormous volume of commentary. The inviolabi lity of the American mainland, breached for the first time since 1812, led to extravagant proclamations by the pundits. It was a n ew world-historical turning point. The 21st century, once greeted triumphantly as marking the dawn of a worldwide neo-liberal civi lization, suddenly became menaced. The choice presented from the White House and its supporters was to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism or be damned. Tariq Ali challenges these assum ptions, arguing instead that what we have experienced is the retu rn of History in a horrific form, with religious symbols playing a part on both sides: 'Allah's revenge,' 'God is on Our Side' and 'God Bless America.' The visible violence of September 11 was th e response to the invisible violence that has been inflicted on c ountries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, P alestine and Chechnya. Some of this has been the direct responsib ility of the United States and Russia. In this wide-ranging book that provides an explanation for both the rise of Islamic fundame ntalism and new forms of Western colonialism, Tariq Ali argues th at many of the values proclaimed by the Enlightenment retain thei r relevance, while portrayals of the American Empire as a new ema ncipatory project are misguided. Editorial Reviews Review Ali's style is vigorous, his narrative compelling, showing that the sh ort-term, self-interested and oil-greedy policies of the British and Americans in such countries as Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, a nd Iran must make our much-vaunted ideals of democracy and equity seem like a bad joke.-Karen Armstrong, The Times The Clash of F undamentalisms is well worth reading . it shows that the harshe st critics of fundamentalism are often exponents of a rival funda mentalism.-John Gray, Independent In this timely and important b ook, Tariq Ali puts the events of September 11 into sweeping hist orical perspective. As we have come to expect from him, he is luc id, eloquent, literary, and painfully honest, as he dissects both Islamic and Western fundamentalism.-Howard Zinn It will not ope n doors at the White House because it makes for uncomfortable rea ding . a wide-ranging and powerfully argued critique, that give s pause for thought.-Financial Times . urbane, highly intellig ent and vividly written.-Richard Sennett, Times Literary Suppleme nt The book is an outstanding contribution to our understanding of the nightmare of history from which so many people are struggl ing to awake, and deserves serious engagement and consideration. Ali broadens our horizons, geographically, historically, intellec tually and politically . His mode of history telling is lyrical and engaging, humane and passionate.-Anthony Arnove, The Nation [Ali] finds little to distinguish between the organised violence of the United States and that of those who oppose it .-Sydney Morning Herald About the Author Tariq Ali is a writer and filmma ker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics-including Pirates of the Caribbean, Bush in Babylon, The Clash of Fundamentalisms and The Obama Syndrome-as well as five novels in his Islam Quintet series and scripts for the stage and screen. SYNOPSIS: Beryl Markham, like Karen Blixen, could only have come out of Africa. Pioneering aviatrix, flamboyant beauty, brilliant race-horse trainer, unscrupulous seducer--her life story is for every reader who was enthralled by Blixen's exotic world, that of Kenya between the wars. This fully authorized biography, drawn from the author's personal association with Beryl and her family, paints a vivid portrait of a tempestuous and controversial character. It tells of her friendship with Karen Blixen (though she commandeered Blixen's husband Bror and lover Denys Finch Hatton), of her spectacular courage when she became the first person to fly from England to America, and of the mysteries surrounding her highly praised, bestselling book WEST WITH THE NIGHT. Before she became a full-time writer, Mary S. Lovell, who is 46, was an accountant and had enjoyed a highly successful business career which included the founding of several flourishing companies. Her interest in vintage aviation began in the late fifties and over the next ten years she and her former husband established and flew a collection of rare vintage aircraft. It was through one of these--a D. H. Gipsy Moth used in the film Out of Africa--that she first heart of Beryl Markham. Like Beryl's, her love of horses began in childhood, and though a back injury suffered in the hunting field means that she can no longer ride, she retains a consuming interest in equestrian sports. Her other interests are travel and ocean racing. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. xv, 381 p. Illustrations. Index. In this political memoir, Ari Fleischer recounts his experiences as the White House press secretary during President George W. Bush's first term. Fleischer tells what it was like to meet the press every day, and to put forth the administration's view in the face of what was sometimes a confrontational (and in his view adversarial) White House press corps. His close access to the president comes through in his portrayal of his former boss, whom he sees as a man of "moral clarity" who was the right person for challenging times. He conveys an insider's view of the highly charged environment in the West Wing during major crises like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the invasion of Afghanistan, and the controversy over Iraq and weapons of mass destruction. But it is his picture of the press corps that provides the focus for this memoir. Using excerpts from transcripts of the sometimes contentious give-and-take between him and the reporters (including Helen Thomas), Fleischer argues that there is a liberal bias to the press corps, and that their reporting is far from fair and balanced. He criticizes the way two strikingly similar presidential actions were reported in strikingly different ways--one clearly in favor of Clinton, the other somewhat less favorable to Bush. Fleischer also discusses "spin" and stonewalling, while reflecting on how he might have done his job better.
