Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Soren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic and religious author. Born in 1813 in Copenhagen, his philosophical work addressed living as a single individual and the importance of personal choice and commitment. A famously fierce critic of the idealist thinkers of his time, he is regarded as the first existentialist philosopher. Here you will find extracts from his greatest works. The Life Lessons series from The School of Life takes a great thinker and highlights those ideas most relevant to ordinary everyday dilemmas. These books emphasise ways in which wise voices from the past have urgently important and inspiring things to tell us. This book is introduced and edited by Robert Ferguson, author of the Viking history The Hammer and the Cross and two Danish novels. He is a novelist, biographer, dramatist and historian. Essential life lessons from Soren Kierkegaard, one of life's Great Thinkers, brought to you by novelist and dramatist Robert Ferguson Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

B&w photos. Timeline. Index. 480 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. Satisfaction guaranteed! Scandinavia is the epitome of cool: from IKEA to hygge, Hamlet to the latest bestselling crime novel, the region's cultural influence is vast. But how valid is this outsider's view of Scandinavia, and how accurate is our picture of life in Scandinavia today? Enter Robert Ferguson's Scandinavians, an ambitious work of history and cultural comment that follows a chronological progression across the Northern centuries: from the Vendel era of Swedish prehistory all the way through Scandinavia's postwar social democratic nirvana and the terror attacks of Anders Behring Beivik.Scandinavians is also a personal investigation, with award-winning author Robert Ferguson as the ideal companion as he explores wide-ranging topics such as the power and mystique of Scandinavian women, from the Valkyries to the Vikings; from Nora and Hedda to Garbo and Bergman. Employing a digressive technique that deftly "combines the factual and the intimate" (Publishers Weekly), recalling the writings of W.G. Sebald, Scandinavians provides unequaled access to the society, politics, culture and temperament of modern Scandinavia.

But how valid is this outsider s view of Scandinavia, and how accurate our picture of life in Scandinavia today? Scandinavians follows a chronological progression across the Northern centuries: the Vendel era of Swedish prehistory; the age of the Vikings; the Christian conversions of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland; the unified Scandinavian state of the late Middle Ages; the sea-change of the Reformation; the kingdom of Denmark-Norway; King Gustav Adolphus and the age of Sweden s greatness; the cultural golden age of Ibsen, Strindberg and Munch; the impact of the Second World War; Scandinavia s postwar social democratic nirvana; and the terror attacks of Anders Behring Breivik. Scandinavians is also a personal investigation, with award-winning author Robert Ferguson as the ideal companion as he explores wide-ranging topics such as the power and mystique of Scandinavian women, from the Valkyries to the Vikings; from Nora and Hedda to Garbo and Bergman. This digressive technique is familiar from the writings of W. G. Sebald, and in Ferguson s hands it is deployed with particular felicity, accessibility, and deftness, richly illuminating our understanding of modern Scandinavia, its society, politics, culture, and temperament."; 6.75 X 1.625 X 9.5 inches; 480 pages.

"Everyone has an image of the Scots - whether as dreamy, tartan-clad romantics or dour, unemotional realists - and of their land as a place of heather, lochs, and glens. The truth behind these images - the reality of the Scottish heritage - is at the heart of this book. And a rich, colorful story The Scottish World tells: of ancient stone settlements perched in rugged Highlands; of invasions by Vikings, Celts, and Romans; of the emergence of a culture called Pictish; of Christian conversion and the rise of a national kirk. It is a tale of powerful rulers and of fierce clan chieftains; of men like Malcolm Canmore - the model for Shakespeare's Macbeth - James I, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce. This is a history that rises to tragedy with Mary Stuart and falls to pathos with Bonnie Prince Charlie. It is a tradition of intelligences as keen and diverse as John Knox, David Hume, Adam Smith, and Thomas Carlyle; of writers as bountiful as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, James Boswell, Robert Louis Stevenson, and James M. Barrie; of the inventor James Watt and the explorer David Livingstone. In short, it is a heritage that must compel the attention and respect not only of Scots and those of Scottish descent but of everyone who would know the true breadth of culture in Britain. A group of scholars deeply versed in the history, art, and literature of Scotland - three Americans and five Scottish contributors - bring their knowledge to bear in a sweeping, highly readable survey that both chronologically and thematically reveals Scotland's culture and character. Profusely illustrated with paintings, photographs, engravings, and drawings, the book is the first comprehensive portrait of the Scottish past. The Scottish World is indispensable." - from the front and rear inside jacket flaps.

Niall Campbell Ferguson (born 18 April 1964) is a Scottish historian who has served as the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and as a Senior Faculty Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. Previously, he was a professor at Harvard, the London School of Economics and New York University, a visiting professor at New College of the Humanities and a senior research fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. Ferguson writes and lectures on international history, economic and financial history and British and American imperialism. He is known for his positive views concerning the British Empire. He once ironically called himself "a fully paid-up member of the neo-imperialist gang" following the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Ferguson has been a contributing editor for Bloomberg Television and a columnist for Newsweek. He began writing a twice-a-month column for Bloomberg Opinion in June 2020. Ferguson has written and presented numerous television documentary series, including The Ascent of Money, which won an International Emmy award for Best Documentary in 2009.[9] In 2004, he was named as one of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people in the world. This is the second volume in the acclaimed history of the legendary banking dynasty, which chronicles the changing fortunes of the financial family during a turbulent era in world history, from their dramatic influence in nineteenth-century Europe to their gradual decline because of the failure to establish a sixth house in the world financial center of New York. Ferguson wrote two volumes about the prominent Rothschild family: The House of Rothschild: Volume 1: Money's Prophets: 1798-1848 and The House of Rothschild: Volume 2: The World's Banker: 1849-1999. These books were the result of original archival research. The books won the Wadsworth Prize for Business History and were also short-listed for the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Literary Award and the American National Jewish Book Award. The books were widely acclaimed. John Lewis Gaddis, a Cold War-era historian, praised Ferguson's "unrivaled range, productivity and visibility". Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm had praised Ferguson as an excellent historian. A reviewer for The Economist described how many regard Ferguson's two books on the Rothschilds "as one of the finest studies of its kind." Writing in The New York Review of Books, Robert Skidelsky praised Ferguson: "Taken together, Ferguson's two volumes are a stupendous achievement, a triumph of historical research and imagination. No serious historian can write about the connection between the politics, diplomacy, and economics of the nineteenth century in the same way again. And, as any good work of history should do, it constantly prompts us to ask questions about our own age, when once again we have embarked on the grand experiment of a world economy without a world government. "Derived from a Kirkus review: In a thorough, diligent study, Ferguson completes his grand chronicle of the family that achieved history's greatest economic hegemony. Access to family records, hitherto unavailable, was facilitated by the English branch of the clan for this monumental authorized history. Ferguson makes their engrossing story an advanced seminar on the financial history of Europe. The Rothschilds practiced geopolitics on a grand scale. They arranged the tricky reparations following the Franco-Prussian conflict, were active in securing Suez for Victoria, and managed assets for the Vatican. They demolished social barriers erected against Jews, hobnobbing easily with aristocracy and royalty, dealing with the likes of Disraeli and Gladstone, Lloyd George and Cecil Rhodes, Napoleon III and Bismarck. They ultimately joined the nobility themselves, purchasing castles and art in prodigious quantities. By the turn of the last century and the advent of the fifth generation, however, there was a decline in the Rothschilds' fortunes. They had neglected to establish a foothold in the New World. Virulent anti-Semitism and two world wars left the family enterprises no more important than those of their numerous competitors. First American Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
