Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Trade paperback. [14], 157, [1] p. Occasional footnotes From a leading scholar of this country's foreign policy comes the brilliant essay about America and the world that has caused a storm in international circles--now expanded into book form. From Wikipedia: "Robert Kagan (born September 26, 1958 in Athens, Greece) is an American historian, author and foreign policy commentator at the Brookings Institution. He was a co-founder of the Project for the New American Century. More recently, his book The World America Made has been publicly endorsed by US President Barack Obama, and its theme was referenced in his 2012 State of the Union Address. Robert Kagan is the son of Donald Kagan and brother of Frederick Kagan. Kagan graduated from Yale University in 1980, having studied history and having founded the Yale Political Monthly. He later earned an MPP from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a PhD in US history from American University in Washington, D.C. He is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. In 1983, Robert Kagan was foreign policy advisor to New York Republican Representative Jack Kemp. Between 1984 and 1986, he worked at the State Department Policy Planning Staff and was a speechwriter for Secretary of State George P. Shultz. From 1986 to 1988, he served in the Bureau of Inter-American Affairs at the State Department. In 1997, he co-founded and served as a director for the now-defunct Project for the New American Century. Kagan has been described as a neoconservative foreign-policy theorist, although Kagan has adamantly rejected being labeled as a "neoconservative". Kagan describes his foreign-policy views as deeply rooted in American history and widely shared by Americans. Kagan spent 13 years as a Senior Associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, before joining the Brookings Institution as a senior fellow in the Center on United States and Europe in September 2010. He was a foreign policy advisor to John McCain, the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2008 election. He also serves on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Foreign Affairs Policy Board. He serves on the board of directors for The Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Kagan is a columnist for the Washington Post. He is a contributing editor at both The New Republic and the Weekly Standard, and has also written for the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, the Wall Street Journal, Commentary, World Affairs, and Policy Review. Kagan wrote an essay in the February 2, 2012 issue of The New Republic on "the myth of American decline", which drew the praise of President Obama, who "spent more than 10 minutes talking about it.going over its arguments paragraph by paragraph." That essay was an excerpt from his most recent book, the New York Times bestseller, The World America Made. His book, Of Paradise and Power, was a national and international bestseller and has been translated into 25 languages. His book, Dangerous Nation, won the 2007 Lepgold Prize from Georgetown University. He has been listed by Foreign Policy and Prospect as one of the world's "Top 100 Public Intellectuals." Reprint. First Vintage Books edition, second printing [stated].

Hardcover. Reprint. Second printing. xviii, 222 p. Illustrations. Notes. Index. In this book, Nye returns to the business of critically appraising America's role in the present and future. While many contemporary 'realist' scholars view China as America's most likely competitor, or envisage a Russia-China-India coalition, Nye feels that the real challenges to America's power come in the form of the very things that have made the last ten years so prosperous: the information revolution and globalization. In Nye's view, while these phenomena at first helped to increase America's 'soft power' (its ability to influence the world through cultural, political, and other non-military means), they will soon threaten to dilute it. As technology spreads the Internet will become less US-centric, transnational corporations and non-governmental actors will gain power, and 'multiple modernities' will mean that 'being number 1 ain't gonna be what it used to be'. Nye includes chapters on American power, the information revolution, globalization, American culture and politics, and 'defining the national interest', along the way considering what the lessons of history have to tell us about what we should do with out unprecedented power-while we still have it. This book will include a sharp analysis of the terrorist attacks on the US in 2000, and will argue that the US cannot fight terrorism by itself. Good in very good dust jacket. Highlighting/underlining. Highlighting in several colors noted.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. U.S. national security policy is at a critically important crossroads. The Bush Doctrine of unilateralism, pre-emptive war, and the imposition of democracy by force has proven disastrous. The United States now finds itself vilified abroad, weakened at home, and bogged down in a seemingly endless and unwinnable war. In To Lead the World, Melvyn P. Leffler and Jeffrey W. Legro bring together eleven of America's most esteemed writersand thinkers to offer concrete, historically grounded suggestions for how America can regain its standing in the world and use its power more wisely than it has during the Bush years. Best-selling authors such asDavid Kennedy, Niall Ferguson, Robert Kagan, Francis Fukuyama, and Samantha Power address such issues as how the US can regain its respect in the world, respond to the biggest threats now facing the country, identify reasonable foreign policy goals, manage the growing debt burden, achieve greater national security, and successfully engage a host of other problems left unsolved and in many cases exacerbated by the Bush Doctrine. Representing a wide range of perspectives, the writers gatheredhere place the current foreign-policy predicament firmly in the larger context of American and world history and draw upon realistic appraisals of both the strengths and the limits of American power. They argue persuasively that the kind of leadership that made the United States a great--and greatly admired--nation in the past can be revitalized to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Written by prize-winning authors and filled with level-headed, far-sighted, and achievable recommendations, To Lead the World will serve as a primary source of political wisdom in the post-Bush era and will add immeasurably to the policy debates surrounding the 2008presidential election. A group of the nation's most prominent foreign policy analysts offer bold and imaginative ideas for U.S. national strategy in the next presidency and beyond. They clarify an increasingly complex world, identify the threats and opportunities ahead, and offer blueprints for achieving national security and international stability. As new condition white boards with a white spine and gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote by William C. Mellon; Introduction; Acknowledgments; Notes; Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "At the height of the great oil boom of the 1800s, John D. Rockefeller was seemingly unstoppable. Capitalizing on the newly emerging industry that was changing the lives of people worldwide, Rockefeller eliminated his rivals to achieve near-total domination of the market. By 1889, he was at the peak of his power, having created one of the largest monopolies in history, so powerful that even the U.S. government was wary of challenging the great "anaconda" of Standard Oil. The Standard never loses -- that is until the unlikely duo of Marcus Samuel and Henri Deterding teamed up to form Royal Dutch Shell, and set the stage for the toppling of Standard Oil. A riveting account of ambition, oil, and greed, Breaking Rockefeller traces Samuel's rise from canny outsider to the heights of the British aristocracy, Deterding's conquest of America, and the collapse of Rockefeller's oil empire. The turn of the twentieth century was a time when vast fortunes were made and lost. Taking readers through the rough and tumble of East London's streets and the twilight turmoil of tsarist Russia to the halls of the British Parliament and right down Broadway in New York City, Peter Doran offers a richly detailed fresh perspective on how Samuel and Deterding beat the world's richest man at his own game." - from the inner front jacket flap. "Peter Doran's Breaking Rockefeller is the best kind of history, telling great stories, providing fascinating detail, and reflecting real knowledge. In this story of the origins of the modern oil industry, there are plenty of lessons for the present, too." - Anne Applebaum, Pulitzer Prize-winning author. "Peter Doran's enthralling account of the early days of the oil industry - particularly the mano a mano battle between a Jewish merchant in England and the original industry titan John D. Rockefeller - reads like a thriller without sacrificing good, solid scholarship. With some relevant observations for our own time, this is a gem of a book." - Robert Kagan, New York Times bestselling author. "Peter Doran tells a riveting and exciting account of the formation of Royal Dutch Shell and how it managed to stand up to Standard Oil at the turn of the nineteenth century. With color and delight, he has captured the nature of the oil business at the time in this well-researched volume." - Anders Aslund, senior fellow, Atlantic Council. "Breaking Rockefeller is fast paced yet anchored by a treasure of fascinating detail. It is an insightful historical backgrounder for today's global energy politics." - Robert D. Kaplan, senior fellow, Center for a New American Security, and author.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In a series of penetrating reflections on the United States and its institutions in the post-9/11 world, this book offers some answers to questions that people at home and abroad have begun to ask about our country. How did it attain its international preeminence? What exactly is this richest, most powerful of countries made of? Where will its unmatched influence lead? Military historian Frederick Kagan discusses the future of our armed forces and the challenges they will face in defending America's unique position. David B. Hart shows how religion, with all its variety and occasional excess, is "alive and striving in America, with the power to shelter many virtues under its promises of supernatural grace." From the future of the law to the future of higher education, from music to the visual arts, Lengthened Shadows provides a unique situation report on American culture today. Writers and thinkers such as Robert Bork, Hilton Kramer, Roger Kimball and Mark Steyn offer a probing assessment of the institutions that organize our lives--their health, their influence and their prospects--at the beginning of what some commentators are calling "the next American century." Offers a series of penetrating reflections on the state of American culture and its prospects, from military to higher education, from religion and law to music and visual arts. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'The American economy is in many ways uniquely unfettered. Nowhere else in the industrial world is it easier to set up a discount store, start a new airline, or shrink a payroll. But extensive economic deregulation has been matched by a burgeoning body of social law cracking down on business. From shareholder litigation and strict product liability to punitive environmental controls and workplace rules, entrepreneurs run a gauntlet of legal perils. The costs of this expanding and contentious agenda often exceed the value of its social benefits. The projected annual costs over benefits of the 1990 Clean Air Act, for instance, surpass the estimated value of U.S. exports blocked by all of Japan's known import restrictions. How sustainable is this situation amid the pressures of globalization The contributors to this volume explore the question from a variety of perspectives.U.S. policymakers frequently criticize the rest of the world for policies and practices that are said to constrict American commerce. Yet some trade disputes have been ignited by questionable rules made in the United States. Indeed, legal strictures have posed barriers to imports and possibly discouraged foreign investors, as well as interfered with some U.S. exports. At times the social regulatory regime has also stirred abrasive efforts to extend U.S. sanctions to foreign soil. Even if those frictions have been of minor consequences so far, inefficient legal and regulatory conventions exact a toll on U.S. productivity growth. The book concludes that in a global economy the burdensome regulations of foreign countries deserve attention, but increasingly so do the burdens that American ''adversarial legalism'' imposes on itself and sometimes on others. Ideas and prospects for correcting the problem are discussed throughout. The contributors include Lee Axelrad, Thomas F. Burke, Loren Cass, Robert A. Kagan, Mark K. Landy, Roger G. Noll, and David Vogel.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xxviii, 322, [4] pages. Foreword by Randy E. Barnett. Author's Note. Index. Inscribed by the author on the fep. Inscription reads 9-13-13 To Rob, A former GMUSL Classmate. Keep the Constitution close to your heart. JB Washington, DC. Joshua Michael Blackman is an American lawyer who is employed as an associate professor of law at the South Texas College of Law where he focuses on constitutional law and the intersection of law and technology. He has authored three books and more than sixty law review articles. After attending Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, and the Antonin Scalia School of Law (then George Mason University Law School) in Arlington, Virginia, Blackman worked as a law clerk for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania under Judge Kim R. Gibson from 2009 to 2011. He then worked for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit under Judge Danny Julian Boggs from 2011 to 2012. He has appeared as a speaker for the Federalist Society, and is an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. In 2012, the United States Supreme Court became the center of the political world. In a dramatic and unexpected 5 4 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts voted on narrow grounds to save the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. Unprecedented tells the inside story of how the challenge to Obamacare raced across all three branches of government, and narrowly avoided a constitutional collision between the Supreme Court and President Obama. On November 13, 2009, a group of Federalist Society lawyers met in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., to devise a legal challenge to the constitutionality of President Obama's legacy, his healthcare reform. It seemed a very long shot, and was dismissed peremptorily by the White House, much of Congress, most legal scholars, and all of the media. Two years later the fight to overturn the Affordable Care Act became a political and legal firestorm. When, finally, the Supreme Court announced its ruling, the judgment was so surprising that two cable news channels misreported it and announced that the Act had been declared unconstitutional. Unprecedented offers unrivaled inside access to how key decisions were made in Washington, based on interviews with over one hundred of the people who lived this journey including the academics who began the challenge, the attorneys who litigated the case at all levels, and Obama administration attorneys who successfully defended the law. It reads like a political thriller, provides the definitive account of how the Supreme Court almost struck down President Obama's unprecedented law, and explains what this decision means for the future of the Constitution, the limits on federal power, and the Supreme Court. Derived from a Kirkus review: A young legal scholar delivers an impressive blow-by-blow account of the court battle to defeat the Affordable Care Act. Unprecedented was the legislative process that enacted it without a single Republican vote, the widespread and swift mobilization of citizens' groups to oppose it, and the legal challenge to overturn it. Blackman provides a helpful legislative history underlying Obamacare's enactment, charting the major parties' shameless shifting of positions on the individual mandate, and he explores the extralegal machinations surrounding the litigation. He focuses on the court duel, the uncommon 26-state coalition opposing the law, the tortuous progress of the health care cases through the lower courts, and the noteworthy three days and over six hours the Supreme Court devoted to oral argument in NFIB v. Sebelius. Employing a theory roundly ridiculed before any litigation began, the plaintiffs argued that neither the Commerce nor the Necessary and Proper Clause permitted the government to require individuals to purchase health care insurance. Remarkably, a majority of the court agreed, but in an opinion worthy of the wily John Marshall, the chief justice found the law constitutional under the government's power to tax. As the implications of John Roberts' controversial opinion play out in the court's future jurisprudence and as the realities of Obamacare's provisions unfold, historians will look to this wild and, yes, unprecedented moment, when legal experts seriously wrangled over whether the federal government could require a citizen to buy broccoli. With his talent for translating arcane legal-speak, Blackman more than capably captures this dramatic constitutional showdown. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
