review 1: Twesigye Jackson Kaguri grew up in a rural village in Uganda. With incredible determination he manages to become accomplished as a scholar and humanitarian, avoiding the AIDS epidemic his siblings will fall prey to and eventually makes a life for himself in the United States. A deeply religious man, he alternates between life as a stay-at-home dad and founder of a free Ugandan school for AIDS orphans in his village. This book is part memoir of his life and part history of the school. Overall, a worthwhile read to those interested in the stories of immigrants who eschew hoarding the American Dream and return home to discover the costs involved to do good in your hometown and honor the lives of lost family members. The writing does fall flat at times because of the fact tha... moret it is a book that is doubtless used to fundraise for and further the school that he is so passionate about. Occasionally this is overdone as a tribute to major donors and foundations who are listed with full formal names each time they are present in the midst of narrative. It isn’t a fatal flaw and it’s certainly an understandable need, but it colors the book with a touch of pomp.
review 2: This story of how one Jackson Kaguri decided to return home to build a school in his village for AIDS orphans is well written and inspiring. I have a feeling that parts of the narrative have been "tweaked" a bit to make the progression more logical than perhaps real life could ever be, but, still, it shows how one person can make a difference with enough motivation and the appropriate resources and education. less
